Fraser's Hill
Wednesday 26 to Sunday 30 December 2007

Another end-of-the-year Fraser's Hill trip! Seven of us stayed at Brinchang Bunglow and did the usual things: walk around during the day spotting birds, plants and butterflies then photographing moths at night after hugely lovely dinners by Mrs Lim.

A bonus was that the fig tree along the road to the bunglow was happily figging and you could just sit there and watch the birds and mammals coming by to feast.

.
Here are shots of the squirrels that came to feast and two young macques playing by the tree.

Apologies for missing out the bird shots but am burnt out from trying to catch up with my backlog of photos. Besides, my bird shots are all of common Fraser's Hill birds and not very good shots at that.

.

. The lantana on the slope in front of the bunglow also attracted the rarely seen Kepala Puteh (photo below):

With its white head and yellow abdomen, it is a very striking butterfly.

. Another find for the trip was this rarely seen species of tree nymph we found along the path to Jeriau Waterfall. It was unable to fly because one of its wings was broken. .

At a stream along the new road (which is closed yet again because of landslides), we found these torrent frogs mating around noon:

I climbed down for a better shot and got the photo on the right.

.

. We found two snakes on this trip: a Pope's Pit Viper roadkill on the way down and this Common Mock Viper (photo on left). .

I must have have well over a hundred moth shots from three nights of mothing. I can't even begin to ID them but can at least start to recognise similarities among them. Here are two of the more interesting ones: .

And I will end with this one raptor shot taken while coming down the hill: an immature White-bellied Sea-eagle circling near the reservoir.
