Patina Copper Jewelry Box
As promised, this page shows the current project I'm working on. While it may not look like much right now, when finished it will have a beautiful patina copper top with Chinese maple leaf accents. And the Red oak will be stained a deep fruitwood color. The key is imagination.
The general dimentions of the box are 3-1/8 in tall x 14 in long x 7 in wide. To save some money I decided to use oak instead of a more traditional wood like cherry for this project.
The picture above shows 1/8" grooves on the top and bottom that will accept the hardboard and copper. You can also see the splines that will join the sides together, making a strong joint and also added character when the box is opened.
Once the box is assembled and glued, I will use the table saw to separate it into a top and bottom.
The picture on the left shows the rest of the materials that I have milled. Once I have the box cut into a top and bottom I'll start to assemble the compaertments that will hold the jewelry. The larger divider will be stationary in the bottom of the box while the smaller compartment will be removable as a tray.
Once that is completed, a mirror would be a nice addition to the underside of the lid. As we all know it is important to not only be beautiful, but functional as well. I'm not just talking about the jewelry box either. Hint hint.
Up to this point the project has gone fairly well. The only difficult parts were cutting the small pieces that serve as dividers. I recommend using wide stock and cutting the thin pieces from that by measuring from the blade itself and using the fence only as a guide. It is much safer this way than trying to set your fence at an 1/8".

That's going to do it for now. As soon as I patina the copper and assemble the box I'll put up more pictures of the project.
