1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3 e6 4.Bd3 The Colle System, a perfect system for Purton, as it allows him to keep a draw in hand and still has some bite for the unwary. 4...c5 5.b3 Nc6 6.a3 a6 7.0-0 b5 8.dxc5 8...Bxc5 9.Bb2 Bb7 10.Nbd2 Rc8 11.Qe2 Be7 12.c4 By engineering this break Purton opens the position for his actively placed bishops, giving him a strong short-term initiative, while still keeping the pawn structure sterile against a higher rated opponent, and thus allowing a draw oppurtunity if nothing comes of his play. 12...bxc4 13.bxc4 dxc4 14.Nxc4 0-0 15.Rfd1 Qc7 16.Rac1 Nd5?! Ostensibily useful, this places black in difficulties due to the abandonment of the black king, which, coupled with the temporary looseness of the black queen and a-pawn is swiftly exploited by Purton. 17.Nce5 Immediately getting to grips with the black weak-spots. The high number of draws that Ben records would seem to signal that he is not a very tactical player, but here he shows very proficient and astute tactical awareness in demonstrating the strength of his position. 17...Qa5 17...Qd6 avoids material loss for the time being, but black had probably missed Ben's idea anyway. 18.Nxc6 Rxc6 19.Rxc6 Bxc6 20.Bxh7+! A useful tactic, picking up a pawn for free.20...Kxh7 21.Qc2+ Kg8 22.Qxc6 Rb8 23.Be5 Rf8 24.h3 Qb5 25.Qxb5 axb5 26.Rb1 f6 27.Bg3 Nc3 28.Rb3 Whilst it was Ben's style of play that got him to this position in the first place, similarly it is his style that resulted in the point being split here, despite his material advantage. After 28...Ne2+, though, followed by the minor piece exchange and trade of the queenside pawns, winning the ending with pawns all on one side of the board could end up being a lot of energy expended over nothing. 1/2-1/2
