Viewed up close, the sloth appears as a hallucination, an ecosystem unto itself that softly vibrates with hundreds of exoparasites.
Only about once each week do they descend to the ground in order to defecate and urinate.
Sloth is the desire for ease, even at the expense of doing the known will of God. Whatever we do in life requires effort. Everything we do is to be a means of salvation. The slothful person is unwilling to do what God wants because of the effort it takes to do it. Sloth becomes a sin when it slows down and even brings to a halt the energy we must expend in using the means to salvation.
Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said Sloth is "sluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good... [it] is evil in its effect, if it so oppresses man as to draw him away entirely from good deeds." (2,35, ad 1)
Those who commit the Sin of Sloth are punished in Hell by being thrown into snake pits. If that doesn't get them off their lazy ass, I don't know what will.
Sloth is ruled by the celestial sign of Saturn.
Sloths spend most of their time upside down. They eat, sleep, mate and give birth upside down. When they do go on the ground, either to switch trees or to defecate (usually once a week), they crawl or pull themselves along, as although they can stand, they cannot walk very well. However, they are very good swimmers.
Sloths sleep around 15 hours per day and may take up to a month to digest a meal.
The sloth is the slowest mammal on earth and its ancestors were the Giant Ground Sloth, an animal that existed before the last ice age and grew to the size of a modern elephant.
