He was reared on a farm in Otisco County, NY. He attended Oberlin College and Amherst College where he graduated in 1857. He attended Andover Theological Seminary where he was ordained. He became pastor of the Congregational Church in Ansonia, CT, on 22 Mar 1860. He was Chaplain of the 20th Regiment, CT Volunteer Infantry from August 1863 to Aug 1864. He was installed as the Pastor of the First Cong. Chuech of Dabbury, CT on 19 Juky, 1865.. In October, 1870 they removed to Des Moines, IA, where he became Pastor of the Plymouth Cong. Church. He was class poet in college and has published some books of poetry.
He enlisted in the 15th Regiment, MA Volunteers and served till the close of the war. He was one of two who reconnoitered the Confederat positions prior to the Battle of Ball's Bluff, and in that battle he barely escaped capture by swimming the river. He was wounded at Antietam, and at Fredericksburg, he was under fire for 24 hours, most of which was spent lying prone between the two opposing forces. He also fought in the Peninsular Campaigns.
Attended Marrietta College in Ohio for two years 1851-52. In 1857 he graduated Amherst College. He was then employed at Richmond College,VA, as a tutor, from Sep 1858 to July 1860. He sailed for Europe, in 1860, and studied philosphy at Gottingen until Oct 1861. He then traveled to Athens, Greece where he stayed in the household of Rev. Jonas King until May 1862. He completed his travels and returned home in Nov 1862. He worked as a civil servant until Jan 1864, then as a banker in Kentucky until the autumn of 1865. he removed to Fayetteville, SC in the winter of 1866 where he is engaged in merchantile and the manufacture of naval stores.
