He was elected to serve in the Massachusetts Legislature in 1855. He wa s ele cted to serve as Representative to U. S. Congress from the First Massachusetts Distric t in th e 44th through the 47th Congress. Chosen President of the Massechusetts Republican C onventio n, held 21 September 1881.
