William Henry SLOCUM

See sketch 382. He was educated at the Warren And Union Hall Acadamies in NYC. Worked as a clerk for Messr s . Maintain and Thorne at the corner of South and Beekman Streets for two years 1828-9. then became a pertner with his brother John W. in the retail grocery business at the corner of Di vision and Attorney Streets. Not caring for that pursuit, he sold out to his brother and apprenticed himself to Andrew Turnbull to learn Carpentry and building. At age seventeen , he ai ded his brother in organizing thee Veto Hose Company, No. 4. His brother was chose n Presiden t and he, Secratary and Treasurer. The city awarded him a fireman's certificate w ithout ques tion as to his age.
A cholera outbreak in 1832 caused him to remove to Long Branch, NJ. He spent ten years there builbing, Farming and teaching School. In 1841 he declined a nomination to the New Jersy Legislature. In 1844 the Legislature appointed him a Judge of the Court of Common P leas for Monmouth County.He was also deputized as a In 1848 an officer of the U.S. Customs and served three years.
In 1848, in partnership with the late Capt. James Green, he began operating the Bath Hot e l at Long Branch and did so until it was destroyed by firein 1867. In 1856 he was appoint e d a Master in Chancery for life by Chancellor Williamson of NJ.
He was a founder of the Eatontown and Seashore Turnpike Company in 1865 and served as i t s Treasurer and as a Director for many years. He wasalso a director of the Shrewsbury Mutu a l Fire Insurance Company of Eatontown, NJ. He was a friend of labor and helped institute t h e ten hour work day for laborers in the summer months. In 1868 he joined the firm of Willi a m Haynes & Company, soon to be suceeded by Drummond, Maps & Co., of Ocean Port, NJ. They w er e lumber dealers and sawmill operators until 1876. Since then he has been retired at Wol f Hi ll, NJ where he has resided since 1844. He is a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church of Eatontown and serves as Treasurer and Warden.

Bachelor. Soldier in U.S. Army for four years until honorably discharged as unfit due to co n vulsions. Visited his two sisters in Michigan and left there for Philadelphia on 15 June 1 84 4 and has not been heard from since.
