Shy
Female Burmese Python
Burmese are BIG snakes. Shy is less
than a year old in this picture and already as big as an adult cornsnake.
We bought her from Bob Clark at the Kansas City Herp Show. Check out Bob's
webpage at www.bobclark.com
.
Burms are well known for their endless
appetites. Shortly after bringing her home Shy wasted no time in eating
a small rat. For those who are curious, yes that's blood on the bottom
of the feeding tub. We have 18 snakes and feeding nights can be a bit messy,
but real snake keepers don't feel sorry for the food or run at the sight
of a little rodent blood.
Misty swore she didn't want a Burm,
but as soon as she saw Shy she was hooked.
Hard to believe that a year ago
she was terrified of snakes. Now she's a proud mom to a giant constrictor
(ok, not so giant now but wait a couple of years)
Looks like a perfect match.
Measuring Shy using the Snake Measurer software.
It's a great program. Using the 9.5" envelope as a standard, you trace
along the snake's back and get an accurate length. She's almost 46" long
now.
Shy in her current enclosure. It is a 30 gallon
tall tank. Within the next 3 or 4 months she will get a new and bigger
home. She's eating 1 medium or 2 small rats a week and growing fast. Don't
worry, we replaced her substrate right after taking this picture. She tends
to bunch up the bed-a-beast after awhile.
