Van is the King of Fanalia. He is a Dragconion that means a person with wings. His mother was maybe the last Dragconion on Ghea. Van's father died of sickness, after that his brother Folken had to go on the quest of killing a dragon to suceed the thrown. His brother never came back and because of that incident Van's mother got heart broken and disappeared into the Fanalian forest in search of her oldest son. She never came back. Balgus then took care of Van until he was old enough to do the quest on slaying a dragon. Van suceeded with Hitomi's help. Later Dilandau and the Dragonslayers from Zaibach was trying to catch Van and Escaflowne. Dilandau and the Dragonslayers burned Fanalia to the ground, Van was forced to flee. Van promised himself that he'll revenge for his country. Later after alot of help from his friends and the ones he loved he got his country back.
