Askew
Slightly
It has been said that we have the name that we have because of the type of music that we play, and it's true. Come to one of our shows and you could hear some bluegrass, celtic fiddle, Beatles, or even some rock. However, we are a band with fiddles, and we somehow make even the most out-of-genre songs a lot better by adding some "fiddley" elements.
How It All Began...
About Us
Our band was started in January of 2004, because of the one trip we look forward to every year, the Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau, Alaska. In the past years we had gone down to Juneau in a huge group led by our instructor, Susie Hallinan. Susie couldn't come to Juneau in 2004, so we decided to go on our own. The five of us, (below, from right) Kyla McGroarty, Jody March, Collin Stackhouse, Katie Sousa, and Aurora Bowers decided to create a band, simply for the amazing experience of the Folk Fest. Once we came up with an [awesome] name, we signed up for a slot in Juneau, and crossed our fingers. Aurora's brother, Ryan (at left) joined with us to add some great bodhran rhythm and other percussion. When the letter from Juneau came, we were all ecstatic, since it was the start of some great music that will (hopefully) last a long time!
We are Slightly Askew, Fairbanks, Alaska's newest (and probably only) teenage fiddle band. Slightly Askew has performed at numerous events around our town, including the Mush for Kids, The College Coffee House, the Blue Loon, and others.
