Computers in the modern age
Here is just a short monologue on the advances that computers have made
in the past 25 years. Twenty five years ago, the first computer I used
was a huge monstrosity that filled an area the size of two living rooms.
It had to be programmed by paper tape, which had to be produced rather
tediously. You only knew that your programme had bugs after you had fed
in your programme, an waited till the following day, when the machine spewed
out your output! Those were tough tedious days. Then by 1980, a revolution
began, culminating in the ZX81 and then the Spectrum microcomputer. Suddenly,
computers had come of age. Not only were they much much smaller, but they
were also now affordable by any household, Sir Clive Sinclair is a great
man.Today, we have Pentium processor based computers which seem to have
infinite capabilities. These machines allow complex programs to be executed
at speed, allowing home computers costing under £ 1000 to carry out
tasks which almost render your high street print shop obsolete. These machines
allow rapid connection to the internet, which will revolutionise future
life. Indeed, the web is set to explode with information. The establishment
of Ferti.net, a specialised site for human reproduction, last year recognises
the importance of the internet as a forum for debate and the dissemination
of information.
