What's it about?
In this remake of Hong Kong's Infernal Affairs, a mafia boss(Jack Nicholson) has his protege(Matt Damon) join the State Police force while a new member to the State Police force(Leonardo DiCaprio) with family ties to the mafia is recruited to go undercover and bust the mafia. As the two learn of each others' existence, they race to find out their respective identities.

My Thoughts
Martin Scorsese finally won the Oscar he was seeking all these years! Is this his best movie? I personally wouldn't agree but with such a great cast, it was probably hard to make a bad movie. Without seeing the original Infernal Affairs, I believe The Departed won the Oscar for Best Picture based on the solid performances from the whole cast as well as a fantastic script. If you never liked Leonardo DiCaprio, this movie could change your opinion. He does a great job in his role as an undercover cop and is one of the big reasons for this movie's success. The rest of the cast also shines including Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, and of course, Jack Nicholson. The movie takes a little while to warm up but once it gets going, it becomes very intriguing. Those wanting to see Scorsese's raw, violent shooting scenes will find plenty of opportunities in this flick. Those looking for some overall message to society should look elsewhere. This is a movie about the mafia versus the cops and that's about it. Gotta love it!
