Both Davor Dzelalija and Sutee Suksomkit scored twice as the Jaguars ended a run of three successive defeats with a thumping 5-1 victory over Gombak United FC at Queenstown Stadium last night.

Substitute Haris Sumri also scored to boost the Jaguars, who were booed off when beaten by the Stallions in their previous game.

The Jaguars were no mood to feel sorry about their past few match performance. They stood firm and worked very hard to fight for a good result to gain ground on the S.League leaders.

The game started very positively for the Jaguars as Midfielder Djamel Achouri nearly put the home team ahead when his powerful 25-yard shot struck the crossbar and keeper Stephen Ng was slow to react.

Not long after in the seven minute, veteran Davor Dzelalija provided a golden opportunity for the team mates to score from an open goal mouth after he won an aerial challenge with the defenders.

Then striker Davor Dzelalija decided to take charge and gave the home team a deserving goal by placing the ball beyond keeper Stephen Ng's reach after defender Bah Mamadou miscalculated the flight of a long cross and failed to head away for safety after thirty one minutes.

The Jaguars came out with renewed purpose after the break. They had sailed into a three-goal lead inside the opening 25 minutes of second half as Haris Sumri reacted first when the Bulls defence froze at a Rudy Khairon trademark free-kick to slam home past the clumsy goalkeeper and bring some joy from his recent misfortune.

Less than a minute after the restart, man of the match Rudy Khairon punished the Bulls again for their slack defending by crossing a just right ball to Davor Dzelalija to score effortlessly.

Thai Sutee Suksomkit gave the fans a farewell gift of two goals in the final 15 minutes of the game before leaving with the Thai National Team for a training tour in England by putting the Jaguars further ahead when he drilled home a left-foot shot.

His second goal was equally good when he slotted home from close range after keeper had failed to hold on to striker Steven Tans' effort from the edge of the box.

Bull defender Bah Mamadou redeemed himself for his earlier mistake by scoring a goal from a powerful volley that gave keeper Dragan Talajic no chance to save it.

The lights at Bedok Stadium went off twice but it did not cause any disturbance to the exciting clash between Geylang United and Sembawang Rangers.

We are talking about the lightings from the watching gallery and not the stadium floodlights. The same stadium had its floodlights broken down due to technical faults 20 days ago when they defeated visiting challenger, Tanjong Pagar, 4-2.

Knowing that the Stallions had just beaten the Jaguars 5-3 last week, the high-flying Eagles gave their visitors no chance to settle down since the first whistle was blown. The match started with a furious pace and presented the 2,955-crowd with a 6-goal thriller.

With star defenders, Niweat Siriwong and Satria Mad suspended for their red card offences, Sembawang paraded a make-shift defence, much to the delight of their opponents. Newly signed Thai Prime League midfielder, Teerasak Po-on, made his senior debut at the Bedok Stadium, after making his registration with the compeition division two days ago.

The opening minutes indicated Geylang's intention to collect 3 points. They had the lion's share of the possession and their domination was duly rewarded mid way through the first half with an Aleksandar Duric's header. The lanky forward timed his run well to meet Noor Ali's cross and the opening goal went straight into the net beyond anybody's reach.

Noor was again the provider before the break. Always looking dangerous down the left, the Singapore international squared a cross that was accurate enough to assist teammate Azhar Baskin in registering the latter's first S.League this season.

Skipper Zulkarnaen Zainal put the victory beyond any doubt when he made it 3-0 from the spot kick before referee Sagadevan Reddy blew for the usual 15 minutes' breather.

Substitute Nebojsa Vukosavljevic made it four without reply for the host in the 63rd minute when he managed to lop the ball into goal beyond an onrushing Yazid Yasin's reach.

Sembawang got one back for the Stallions 70th minute through Bamrung Boonprom but it was too late and too little.

10 minutes from time, Noor Ali resumed his team's 4-goal lead by incrasing the lead though a goalmouth melee.

"The first 2 goals killed us. My young could not cope well with the early setbacks," said Vorawan Chitavanich, coach of visiting Sembawang Rangers.

Despite claiming a deserving victory over an adventurous Sembawang, Geylang coach Jang Jung was not the happiest man as he expressed his woes for his team's complacency after having a fine run recently. Manager Syed Kadir was quick to defend his players by crediting his charges for following the instructions throughout the match.

SLEAGUE.COM Man of the Match: Daorueang Krongpol (Balestier Central FC )

Match Details

By Jean-Luc Dylan

27 April 2001

Alan Vest must be wondering, what does he have to do for the Dolphins to record their first win of the season; next to complaining about the referee, that is. In a five goal thriller tonight, Marine Castle, playing at home, lost 2-3 to the Tigers.

Aggressiveness, the element that has always been missing from Balestier central, was surprisingly, the key tonight. Balestier's coach P N Sivaji opted for attack instead of their soak and counter-attacking play that the Tigers have been playing since the stone age.

Dolphins were the first to draw blood when Norisham Musahar gave a cutting pass to Thomas English, who was left unmarked in the box, in the 29th minute. The Englishman took his time to place the ball beyond Haril Amin's reach. But their joy came to a stop in the 41st minute when Zainial Yusoff brought Daorueang Krongpol down in the box, when the Thai striker had only the keeper to beat. Referee M. Ganesan point to the penalty mark without hesitation and send the Marine Castle defender was off for a early shower. Daorueang coolly converted the goal for his team as he sent Amos Boon the wrong way.

The Dolphins had their chance soon in the 2nd half when Josip Kozic handed the ball just outside the Balestier Central box. Not surprisingly the Tiger organized a ten-men wall to stop Thomas English from converting the free kick. Faced with this, English decided to lop the ball to the top corner of Haril Amin's goal, but the keeper who was playing against his former club of 3 years, anticipated it and saved the ball with ease.

Daorueang Krongpal proved how important he is to Sivaji's side this year when looped the ball over an out of position Amos Boon in the 60th minute for Balestier's 2nd goal. The Dolphins' fate were seal 17th minute later when substitute Iskandar Karim took a shot at Amos Boon and it bounced off the custodian's hand, Aidil Sulaiman who was left unmarked by any Dolphins quickly took the rebound and kick it into the empty net. Thomas English, the dolphins only efficient player tonight did manage to get another goal back for his team in the 91st minute but the Dolphins fate were already sealed by then.

Unimaginative attack, defence that often caught off guard and poor refereeing decisions (according to some Dolphins officials) are the woes for Alan Vest, who emotionally sank to the running track when the Dolphins last chance at goal in the 92nd minute hit the cross bar. The former Eagles coach argued that his players played well, but only lost the game due to the Match officials.

Sivaji however feel that his team was playing below par tonight, but he untimely excuses them as the game was Tigers' 3rd in just 7 days. All credit tonight goes to Sivaji's plan tonight to go for the 3 point rather then sit back and defend, thus treating the fans to a rare attacking game from the Tigers. But what prompt me in today's game is that when will Marine Castle stop crying for fairplay!

A point away to Woodlands is nothing to be scoffed at these day, but it was not enough to satisfy V.Sundramoorthy who would certainly feel that 2 vital points were lost tonight at Woodlands stadium.

The Jurong player-coach returned to his former club and had been hoping to get his team's 4th win in 4 league games, but he was left frustrated when his players failed to convert numerous opportunities. Korean striker Park Tae Won was the chief culprit when he misses 3 open goals.

From the first whistle, it was the orange army of the Jurong Cobras who took the initiatives. They dominated the opening 10 minutes and were unlucky not to score through T Ramoo, Park Tae Won and V Selvaraj.

On the other hand, with 4 consecutive defeats and a scoreless record in as many games, Woodlands Wellington hungrily welcomed the Cobras to their home pitch.

The Rams were aborbing Cobras' attempts in the early stages. Their first real threat came in the 21st minute and most importantly, they made it count. A solo run by Esad Sejdic into the penalty area found Ivica Raguz lurking. The Croatian coolly poked the ball into goal to put Woodlands ahead.

The visitors replied shortly after. In the 32nd minute, Woodlands' custodian, Faizal Ali could only parry a wonderful free kick by Jurong's midfield general, Velimir Crljen. The rebound escaped everybody else except Siva Kumar. The national winger made the great opportunity counted, for his team's equalizer. That goal had emerged Sivakumar the top scorer for Jurong Cobras with 3 goals.

Lady luck was not smiling at the Western club as both Toh Choon Ming and Goh Tat Chuan had their attempts denied by the woodworks in the 53rd and 70th minutes respectively.

Carrying the new nickname of "super-sub", V. Sundramoorthy brought himself on for the last 15 minutes. But that move was insufficient to break down the stubborn Woodlands defence. The home team looked pleased to collect their first point in 4 league games. It could have been more, but substitute Masalan Mahat fumbled his opportunity when he was in a one-to-one situation with Cobras' goalkeeper Bashir Khan.

Jurong with all their tired limbs tried to search for a winner, but it was all too late. In the end, the drawn game brought a halt to Woodlands' loosing streak and Jurong Cobras' winning streak.

Match Details

By Eswandy Sarip

The SAF Warriors are back to their winning ways again as they resisted a late stomp from the Elephants of Clementi Khalsa in a slow but productive battle here at the Clementi Stadium this evening. But who can blame the two teams? The grass on the pitch looked suspiciously too long for smooth high level football. And on a night where foreign talent reign supreme, it is disturbing also that a load of Japanese primary school kids outshine cheerleaders from the 2 teams. The traditional dance skit during half time by the Clementi Japanese Primary School would probably put the cheerleaders (and maybe some players too) from all the S.League clubs to shame. Spirited and graceful. Attributes sadly seen only in a few moments in this game.

SAFFC showed enough hunger to win from the start and they needed only 6 minutes to set things on path. Thai hotshot and also Man-of-the-Match Kiatisuk Senamuang started the move. His sheer grit and determination got him away from a scramble with 2 Clementi Khalsa aggressors. The resulting cross got to Azhar Salleh laying on for Nazri Nasir to send a crisp square to that other SAFFC marksman Mirko Grabovac. Mirko, now on a hot streak, struck a stiff grounder which left Elephants keeper Shamsuri Ahmad with no chance.

Clementi Khalsa put up a brave front but the Japanese samurai Michiaki Kakimoto found the space he shares with SAFFC’s Hairi Su’ap a bit too limited. With his Nigerian strike partner Wisdom Chibuike tripping over the ball one too often and Ernie Tapai unimpressive, only their hair apparent Fahmie Abdullah showed some signs of promise.

SAFFC then struck again in the 25th minute with the Mirko-‘Zico’ tag team combo. This time Mirko sweetly delivered a defence-splitting pass to the right wing for Kiatisuk to run to. The 25-year-old Thai international took on Elephants’ Quek Hock Tiong for a 40m sprint with the ball and he won it hands down. He then smoothly cut in from the right and decisively let fly an unstoppable screamer from an acute angle past Shamsuri.

The duo was at it again in the 37th minute. A harmless looking lob to no-one from Dalis Supait was headed by Elephants’ sweeper Vlado Bozinoski. The poorly-cleared header fell to Mirko just outside the box. You don’t give chances like these to Mirko. And not when he has got a effective partner in crime in ‘Zico’. Mirko intelligently slipped a through pass down the middle and out lurked Kiatisuk who cheekily jinked past a diving Shamsuri to slot home his 6th goal of the season.

Clementi Khalsa, though failing time and again trying to penetrate SAFFC defence, had their chances. In the 33rd minute Ernie Tapai tested stand-in SAFFC veteran custodian Shahri Rahim. His curling free-kick was palmed away to safety by Shahri, who at 37, shows the agility of a teenager. Then 10 minutes later, Shahri was again given a scare this time by Kakimoto who spotted him off-position from way out. Kakimoto’s resulting curler from 30m however couldn’t beat the crossbar but it drew cheers from the Clementi Khalsa fans who have already taken a fancy to the stylish Japanese.

Just as the Elephants were starting to gain footing in the 2nd half Kiatisuk had to spoil it again for Clementi Khalsa. In the 59th minute, he went on again on his mazy runs, penetrating from the right and this time Elephants’ Eric Francis went it late for his tackle. Referee N. Santhan instantly blew for a penalty. It was business as usual for Mirko as he coolly placed the spot-kick beyond Shamsuri’s reach.

4 goals up and SAFFC decided to go into a slumber of complacency. The Elephants stomped back into the game. In the 66th minute, from one of their forays upfront, Wisdom Chibuike rose unmarked to nod home a perfect Fahmie Abdullah cross from the left. Clementi then piled on the pressure with time running out. Kakimoto had a curler incredibly saved by Shahri in the dying moments of the game. It looked like he was never going to get his name on the scoresheet until a minute later. He latched onto a defence-splitting pass and elegantly slipped past Shahri to slot home Clementi’s 2nd goal much to the delight of their fans.

Again SAFFC has paraded their porous defence for the viewing pleasure of the armchair football critic at home. Can they be as successful as the Warriors of old with a defence this generous? For Clementi Khalsa it needs more commitment in attack to stomp louder in the league. And just like the cheerleaders of the league and the Clementi Stadium pitch, it can only improve.

The Dragons are now for the first time since the league started in top three positions behind league leaders the flying Eagles and the mighty Rhinos. On the other hand, the Stags are now second last from the bottom of the league standing.

Despite defender Azlan Alipah scoring his third of the season as the Stags sublimely crafted a 32nd minute opener through a corner kick, goals from Peres De Oliveiro and Indra Sahdan condemned the Stags to further misery, while the Dragons enjoyed their second away win in the 2001 season.

The Stags, fired up by coach V Sivalingam after their home draw with the Tigers last Tuesday, had started brightly but by the end they were lucky with some crucial decisions against them made by the man in the middle and his assistant down at the touchline.

With veteran Amin Nasir out of the game due to injury, coach V Sivalingam trusted young Jaslee Hatta and Rasidi Mostafah into the starting eleven.

Both of them did very well in the game. They combined well with their last man in defence Aidil Sharin who was outstanding in this new make shift defence.

After the break the Stags always looked the likely winners, with Sead Muratovic and man of the match Joselito Da Silva orchestrating their dangerous forward thrusts from central midfield.

Rovers' best chance had fallen to Marcelo Da Silva who tormented Home’s rearguard all night saw his low and powerful shot went straight into the hands of the rather fortunate Adi Salleh.

However the Dragons did not allow the Stags any more chance to press on, and they got the controversial break when Peres De Oliveiro equalised in the 53rd-minute.

The Stags were slow to act after Peres De Oliveiro broke the offside trap and came off best against the stranded keeper Noorisham Zainon who had the habit of coming out of his goal line to play as a sweeper.

Just before the Stags had enough of the official stand of allowing the equalizer goal, the visitor struck again. Speed king and top local scorer Indra Sahdan thanked his team mates especially Peres De Oliveiro for scoring his number six in the league so far.

It was a simple but intelligent one. Hard working Indra Sahdan paced along with Peres De Oliveiro who had the ball with him after both again beat the offside trap. Selfish less Peres De Oliveiro then squared the ball to Indra Sahdan to score into an empty net.

The fans were also the winner of the game. They were entertained by the fast-improved Stags and the resilient Dragons who aimed to win the double this year.
