SLEAGUE.COM Man of the Match: Bamrung Boonprom (Sembawang Rangers FC)

Match Details

By Jeremy Lim

The little known former Asian youth player of year Bamrung Boonprom score a hat-trick to help his club a historical victory against the glamour club Tanjong Pagar United. No Sembawang player has ever score a hat-trick in a Sleague match, and maybe this is the sign of better times for the long suffering Sembawang fans.

Everyone is expecting Tanjong Pagar too win handsomely tonight and true enough, Niweat Sriwong was given his second red card of the season with a legitimate tackle on Davor Dzelalij in the 12th minute. Davor was put through by Steven Tan and Niweat did well to win the ball back. However, referee N.Santhan call for a professional foul on Niweat and send him off much to the disgust of the home crowd. Davor Dzelalij freekick curve over the Stallions' wall and ended up inside of Yazid Yasin net, probably rubbing salt to the Stallions wound.

But the Stallions live up the unofficial title of Sleague's most-improved team this season. Like old warhorses, they didn't give up and despite a man down, playing with one striker up front. They decided to bring the game to their opposition half in the next 10 mins, and were awarded a penalty when the whole Tanjong Pagar defence failed to clear the ball properly from a corner. Kharani Sanuci picked up the loose ball and passed it to Thawachai Ongtrakul with his back facing the goal. A Tanjong pagar defender brought the Thai midfielder down inside the penalty box right in front of the referee. Tawan Sripan coolly converted the penalty in the 21st minute.

While every Stallion fans is still celebrating the equalizer, Tanjong Pagar staged a counter strike. Djamel Achouri received the ball from Davor Dzelalij, given time and space; he fired from 30-metre range for Tanjong Pagar 2nd goal barely one minute later.

Then came the turning point of the match, Hyrizan Jufri was sent off in the 31st minute for a two-legged tackle on Tawan Sripan right in the middle of the pitch. With 10 men versa 10, the match evened up. Before they could accustom to a shorthanded midfield, Tanjong Pagar gave the ball away to Tawan Sripan. Tawan put Bamrung through, and this little guy ran the full 20 metres towards the left corner before cutting in on his marker. He sends a low cross for the unmarked Thawachai Ongtrakul to tap in for the equalizer in the 36th minute.

With a man short in the midfield, Jaguars' coach Tohari Pajian decided to replace a slow defender with another slower and half-fit Lim Tong Hai. This gives Sembawang midfield ample space to exploit. And from there, it was Bamrung's showcase. With Tawan, Thawachai and the ever improving Kharani Sanuchi as supporting roles, Bamrung scored his first goal right in end of the 1st half after Kharani managed to squeeze a through ball for Bamrung to run for. His outpace the Tanjong Pagar defence and with the advancing Dragan Talajic to beat, he lobbed the ball past into an empty net.

The Stallions didn't sit back to defend their lead after coming out for the 2nd half, and in the 64th min. From a defending position, Sembawang launched a counterattack. Tawan Sripan, with Rudy Khairon breathing down his neck, ran almost the whole of the Tanjong Pagar half before crossing the ball for Bamrung to score.

In the 71st min, Bamrung completed his hatrick after he broke free again from a Thawachai pass to score.

Tanjong Pagar did try to make a comeback soon after, but with Yazid almost unstoppable in between the posts. Super Yazid denies long-range shots from Davor, Suttee and Rudy Khairon. And with time running out, its simply too little, too late. The match ended with Satria Mad being sent off late in the match, while Rudy Khairon pulled one back for the visitors from 35 metre in the last min of added time.

Geyland United FC beat Singapore Armed Forces FC 2 - 1 in the top of the table clash at Choa Chu Kang Stadium last night.

4,400 fans, the biggest crowd so far in a single NTUC Income S.league match, saw the mighty Warriors were stopped temporarily from making it a one-horse race.

The Eagles remains the only unbeaten team in the league after six rounds. It was then Rhinos' first defeat in their new home ground.

It all seemed to be going well for the warriors as current top scorer Mirko Grabovac scored his ten of the season with ease as he danced himself inside the box and found himself with a lot of space to line up his powerful shot, but injuries and suspension to giant Veselko Paponja and ex-lion star Tan Kim Leng left 'rusty' Hairi Su'ap and Razif Mahamud to lead the defence line in their absence.

It was not an easy task for both players as they were assigned to counter danger man Aleksandar Duric and clever Brian Bothwell.

Noor Ali always worried the warriors defence especially with Hairi Su'ap who was making his first start of the season, with his pace and emerged their hero when he won a penalty kick after he was brought down by hesitant Hairi Su'ap in the penalty box.

Geylang captain Zulkarnaen Zainal stepped up to the penalty spot and he coolly slammed the ball into the top right corner of the national team keeper Rezal Hassan's goal post.

After the break, the Eagles were in control of the game with hardworking William Bone winning almost every ball in the middle of the park. It was more so when creative player Rafi Ali was substituted due to an injury.

SAF warriors seem lost after that, both hot shot Mirko Grabovac and Thai Kiatisuk Senamuang were limited to handle high and aimless ball.

Despite getting a yellow card early in the game, Man of the match Noh Rahman did not stop making those hard and decisive tackles against his high profile opponents.

Midfielder Azhar Baksin took a deadly corner in the 74th minute. The ball deceived keeper Rezal Hassan and his defenders caught him in an aerial challenge. Then somehow the ball landed at the feet of Duric, who shot home the goal.

It was a wining goal and a famous victory for the Eagles.

If one was wondering why Marine Castle United, a perennial strugglers, despite the fact that having a top notch coach in the form of Alan Vest, still unable to revise the tide, perhaps he or she would get a satisfactory answer after endured a 90 minute long of dull, dreadful game of football.

Firmly anchored at the bottom of the league table, the Dolphins were never seems as a tough opponent to Home Utd, after all it only managed to salvage a point after 6 rounds of league football.

Therefore, from the beginning to the end of the game, it was clearly a one-sided affair. With Home Utd took the role as the aggressor while Marine Castle as the unfortunate part of that as a weakling [sorry, Dolphins fans]

Luckily for the visiting team and their the small band of fans, the aggressor of the night, looked extremely blunt as if the strikeforce had left their shooting boots at home. Very often in this bore encountered, fans saw countless of chances being blown away.

As early as in the 3rd minute, Brazilian Peres Oliveira had first opportunity, after chested down the ball nicely, he packed too-much power in his shoot that could only saw the ball flew over the crossbar.

With that missed chance signalled the beginning of the innumerable goal opportunities that went empty-handed as well, with the biggest culprit, Jacksen Tiago who in his rare first XI appearance, failed to make a full use of the chances handed over to him.

It was only in second half, when the Protector’s Dutch coach, Roberts Alberts decided to bring in last season’s young player of the year, Indra Sahdan Daud, in the 56th minute to aid the blunt frontline.

This eventually paid off in the 61st minute, when the young 22 year-old striker, slotted home the match winner, after some neat passing exchanges between him, Egmar Goncalves and Jacksen Tiago.

What a spark he proved to be, as Indra looked threatening every time he’s on the ball, for example in the 82nd minute, after received a flick from Egmar, he surge into the Dolphins and thought he could simply increased his tally of the to 2, but Marine Castle’s custodian, Amos Boon, got his angle well-covered and Boon was also there to deny Indra again 89th minute.

The visiting side were clearly outclassed by the host, if not for the home side’s luckless frontline and it’s own stout defending, the Dolphins would have duly punished heavily. But they could only counted themselves unlucky when their only genuine shot of the night, was cleared off the line by Protector’s skipper, S Subramani on the one-hour mark.

The other weakness that contributed to Marine Castle’s loss was the team’s "long ball" tactics [coach Alan Vest’s pet tactics], which many of these passes either were being intercepted by the colossal Home Utd’s defence or it’s strikers failed to link it up.

But it’s not a sad night for team that stuck in the bottom of the table as it’s fan club had something to cheer after they won the telematch against the Home Utd’s supporters during the half-time entertainment period at the Bishan stadium.

Match Details

By Vincent Teo

In a night when controversial referee's decision and a determined opponent threatened to deny Gombak's victory celebration, Thai international, Choketawee Promrut, made the difference between a winner and a loser. The match looked set to end in a 1-1 stalemate when Choketawee's scorcher in the late in the 2nd half ensure his team walked away with full points, much to the delights of the home fans. It was also Gombak's first victory this season and hopefully it will take off some pressure from the Bulls.

The match was, as the Bull's coach Moey Yok Ham put it aptly, "not the most beautiful game". It was definitely not in the same class as the Sembawang-Tanjong Pagar affair or Geylang-SAFFC duel played in the previous night. The talk of the night, besides Choketawee's late winner, was the referee's failure to send off Vlado Bozinoski who obviously committed a professional foul on Azhar Jamil in the 70th minute. The referee chose to only issue a yellow card to Vlado and award a freekick to Gombak instead of a penalty. When queried for a response, the Gombak's management decided not to dispute with the referee's decision, perhaps they are already too happy with their first victory.

Both teams started the match cautiously and were contented with sporadic goal-scoring opportunities that hardly threatened each other. The absence of Aberrazak Merzagua, due to a fever, seems to deprive the home team the creativity and the cutting edge. Clementi's highly touted Japanese striker, Michiaki Kakimoto, was however well policed by Bah Mamodou.

It was Clementi who took a surprise lead in the 19th minute when Fahmie Abdullah floated in a wicked cross from the edge of the box for Eric Francis to head it beyond the reach of Stephen Ng. Then, Michiaki Kakimoto's effort in the 35th min was ruled offside by the referee. Bolstered by the lead, Clementi gradually looked the more dangerous side after that. Unfortunately for the Elephants, all their efforts were undone in the 43rd minute. Eventual match winner Choketawee sent a diagonal cross into the penalty box for Diallo Abdoulaye to equalise.

Almost the entire second half continued with the deadlock when neither side had the ability to beat each other. Things took a dramatic change in the dying moments of the second half though. In the 89th minute, Gombak was actually denied a goal by Azhar Jamil for being offside. Just as everyone was thinking that the match would end up in a 1-1 draw, Choketawee Promrut had other ideas. In the 90th minute, there was a big scramble in the Clementi's penalty area before the ball was pulled back for Choketawee to slam in. It was a goal that came too late for Clementi to react.

Match Details

By Ko Po Hui

The Tigers of the Balestier Central had extend their undefeated home record to 3 games, after beating fellow mid-tablers, Woodlands Wellington Rams, a goal to nothing.

The host started the game with a pretty fragile looking defence, at the start of the encounter when they almost allow the visitor to claim the lead. Particularly in the 9th minute, when a young Prime Leaguer by the name Masalan Mahat, who’s one-on-one encounter was most unluckily to be gather by Tiger’s custodian, Haril Amin, who stood his ground.

Subsequently, Woodlands began series of offensive moves that threaten to cripple the Balestier’s defence. But thank goodness the lady luck was smiling at them, thus a sign of relief to Balestier.

And once again it was their famed "absorb and attack" strategy that won the game for Balestier in the 13th minute.

It all began with a Woodlands’s free kick at the edge of the box, that hit the wall, follow by a clearance from defender Rizaal Hashim’s header, which was gathered by Thai import, Daorueang Krongpol, who dribbled his way through the middle of the pitch, before singled out a cross to the left to Faizal Sazali, who then return the favour to Daorueang, whom by then had already split the Rams’s backline with his run and slammed home the winner, his 2nd goals in 2 matches.

When the second half resumed, both team tried to stamp their authority on this game, however as the Balestier’s Fabio Da Silva had replaced in the 45th minute followed by Woodland’s Ivica Raguz in the 58th minute, meaning whoever can cope without it’s midfield player-maker would it win the game.

Balestier Central had only them to blame if they felt that they should have won by a bigger margin tonight against the guest at their Tiger Lair.

Quite often in this game, after having the possession, Balestier would advanced their way into the Woodlands’ territory, if not for their unpolished passing and impatient crossing, they would have add a few more to make the 3points safe in the bag.

That 3 points looks almost beyond the reach, when the Rams piled up the pressure in the dying moments, giving the home team a few moments of scare, such as the free-kick at the edge of the box by Rams’ skipper Surachai Jirasrichote, brought the best of the sometime inconsistent Hairil Amin

Maybe what probably worried Mr P N Sivaji, the Balestier’s coach is the injuries that number of his players sustained tonight, particular Brazilian midfielder, Fabio [hamstring injury] and Hairil Amin [groin problem], as come Tuesday they will face Tampines Rovers, who will eager to revenge for their earlier lost against the Tigers and away fixture at Hougang Stadium, versus bottom of the table, Marine Castle Utd.

While for the Rams, it’s looks like a bitter pill to swallow, 3 straight losses after fine start, like what their Croatian coach, Mr Ivan Raznjevic said in the post match press conference, whoever score win the game.

Jurong FC climbed to the fifth position of the NTUC Income S.League standing after beating Tampines Rovers FC 2 – 1 in Jurong East Stadium last night.

The Cobras overcame a shaky start to triumph with a late goal from A Siva Kumar, but it was hard luck for the visiting team. The Stags dominated the first half but were too often guilty of being careless with their final pass and took the lead in the fourth minute through an own goal by V Selvaraj after a vicious direct free kick taken by man of the match Joselito Da Silva.

The Cobras shrugged off the disappointment of conceding a silly own goal early on to hit back with two goals in second half.

The first goal was scored in the 68th minute of the game. Striker Toh Choon Ming received the ball following a cross from the left from Tamil Marren to send a low left-footed drive just pass keeper Noorisham Zainon.

The game was a scrappy affair with poor refereeing and a lot of flying tackles mainly deployed by the Cobras against the skillful Brazilians were unspotted.

A Siva Kumar scored Cobra’s second goal in the 81st minute of the game against his previous club by lobbying the ball into the empty net after receiving a gifted ball from keeper Noorisham Zainon who came off worse from a challenge with danger man Toh Choon Ming.

The Stags had themselves to blame for failing to get something out of the game. Their defending failed to match the quality of the approach play, in which the trios Brazilians were simply outstanding.

Constant pressure late on from Rovers led to golden opportunities for Marcelo Da Silva and Adriano Reis to force the game into draw game, but both, especially Marcelo Da Silva who missed the penalty kick in the dying minute of the game after Sead Muratovic was brought down by V Selvaraj in the penalty box, wasted their efforts.
