11 April 2001

A thrilling match ended Clementi Khalsa's hope of maintaining the unbeaten record. Opposing Geylang Eagles were responsible for shattering the Elephants' dream, not without the help of a suspended Ernest Tapai. Knowing the absence of the famous Clementi playmaker, visiting Geylang Eagles marched on to the field looking the more confident of the 2 sides.

Expectedly, Geylang was first side to make themselves comfortable to the pitch that was lubricated by an afternoon downpour. Effective wing plays had created sufficient half chances. None of these chances could pay dividends but they were good enough to unsettle the Elephants.

The match never looked like a high-scoring game until the 35th minute. Against the run of play, a Geylang defender was caught by referee, Timothy Dennison, for handling the ball in the box. Crowd favourite, Michiaki Kakimoto, coolly send Shahril Jantan the wrong way and Clementi took a surprise lead.

Like how unexpectedly the underdogs took the lead, they conceded 2 goals within the next 8 minutes to lag behind the Eagles. Noor Ali scored the equalizer in the 39th minute with a delightful chip while Brian Bothwell put his team ahead 4 minutes later.

Other than these 3 goals in the first half, it was the brilliant goalkeeping skills of Shahril Jantan and Shamsuri Ahmad that denied the attempts by Kakimoto and Bothwell respectively.

When the match resumed in the second half, Geylang coach made a tactical switch by replacing striker Nebojsa Vukosavljevic with National Under 23 midfielder, Syed Fadhil. But that did not stop Geylang from going ahead. Aleksandar Duric added his goal tally by one with a close range header, off a corner kick in the 55th minute.

The determined Clementi side never gave up and their continuous efforts paid off in the 74th minute when Kakimoto capitalized on a restless Geylang defence and reduced the goal margin with a superb header.

Referee Dennison had a busy night as he had to flash his yellow cards 11 times with Syed Fadhil being the recipient twice and the 20 years old had to go for early showers in the 83rd minute. The one-man advantage had prompted the Elephants to search for their late equalizer. However, it could not be materialized.

Clementi play-coach, Vlado Bozinoski, admitted that the team missed its influential skipper, Ernest Tapai. However, the 37 years old was pleased with the performance of his charges, especially with Japanese striker, Michiaki Kakimoto.

His counterpart, Jang Jung, was satisfied with the 3 points won but certainly not the 2 "silly" goals conceded. Judging from him resting a yellow-carded Billy Bone late in the game, there is no prize in guessing the Korean has already set his mind and resources to focus on next week's clash against the SAF Warriors.

Will Tan Kim Leng ever learn his lesson? Many would thought that after being fine S$1,000.00 for his "gesture" at Yishun, his shower room incident at Queenstown last year and his absent from the National Team would have given him some food for thought this season.

There were no booing, no jeering or no taunting from the home fans, so what causes him to lose his cool.

From the press box, one can easily tell that he is assign to shut out ?peed devil?Suttee Suksomkit. He resorted to jersey pulling, jumping over, pulling, pushing and hacking his opponent down each time he lost his private battles with the Thai striker.

The referee has warned him time and again but the player shows no remorse. His temper finally caught up with him in the second half. In the 51 minutes, Referee Krishan Lal Giri could take it no longer and ask him to take an early shower for his second bookable offence despite the pleading by all the Warriors.

Surprisingly, the Jaguar played an open game and clearly wanted to take control of the game as early as the 3rd minute.

Davor Dzelalij tries to dribble the ball into the Warriors penalty area but Paponja and another defender stop him just as he was about to take his kick and he shot wide under pressure from his opponents.

The first goal for the came in the 21st minutes. Mirko Grobovac left unmark when a cross came in from the right. He headed the ball downward that beat Dragan Talajic all the way.

The Jaguar tries on many occasion to draw level but they were let down by their poor finishing and whenever they were on target, the on form Rezal Hassan was there to stop the ball from going into the net.

The first half ended with the Warriors leading by the odd goal.

Two corner kicks in the 47th minutes and 66rd minutes resulted in 2 more goals for the Warriors. Nenad Bacina scored the first one and Mirko Grobavac took the second bringing his goal tally to 9th goal in 5 matches.

Surprisingly. His striker partner Kiatisuk Senamuang was not his usual self and eventually he was replaced by Mohd Nor Alam Shah in the second half.

The Warriors troubled started after the dismissal of Tan Kim Leng in the 52nd minutes. Without a speedy defender to take on Suttee Suksomkit, the Thai players were lots of space to roam the field.

It was a matter of time when Steven Tan found Sutte lurking dangerously behind the entire Warrior defence. He placed a precise cross, which eludes the Warrior defence, and Sutte Suksomkit make no mistake in guiding the ball into the net for the Jaguar? first goal in the 70th minute.

The second was score from a goalmouth melee and Hyrizan Jufri scored his second goal of the season capitalising on confusion of the Warrior defence at the full time mark

The Jaguar dominated the last 4 minutes of time added on as the Warriors deployed all their men back into defence to soak up the entire jaguar attacked.

But it was the same story of too little too late and the Warriors remain unbeaten after 5 games taking the top spot on the league table with 13 points.

In the end, the game ended 2-3 in favour of the Warriors but the 4300 fans were really treated a pulsating 90 minutes of good attacking football.

Match Details

By Ko Po Hui

Initially, the press folks who were at the Toa Payoh stadium covering the match between Balestier Central and Home Utd would thought that they would going to have a bad field day, after witnessed another predictable one-side game in the first half.

Much to the dismay of the 2553 spectators at the stadium, the host habitually deployed its pet "Absorb and Attack" tactics, which is deemed by most fans, as being too defensive.

Together with it unimaginative passes and directionless long ball played to the front, which most of its wingers failed to get on to it. The Tigers should be ashamed of themselves for the fact that they were still able to concede a goal despite having an 8-man wall, unlike the 'golden triangle' of the Protectors - comprises of national defenders in the form of S Subramani, Aide Iskandar and former Woodlands captain, Mohd Mardani.

Blessed with the fact that their opponents can afford to sit back and allowed them to advance forward, Home Utd controlled most of the game played in the first half. Therefore it wasn't astonishment that the visitor took the lead in the 14th minute through Brazilian, Peres Oliveira.

Unfortunately, for last season's Young Player of the Year, Indra Sahdan, in contrast had a quiet game as compare to his 2 goal performance last week at Woodlands, no surprisingly, Balestier coach, PN Sivaji had assigned his defenders to keep a close look at the young nippy, in-form striker.

Thanks Goodness, the game began to pick up its tempo in the second half.

Home Utd thought that they had sealed up the 3 points in the bag, but star striker, Egmar Goncalves's shot hit the crossbar when the game resumed, what a closed shaved that was for the Tigers.

With that onward, Balestier began to show its grit when their 'Absorb and Attack' tactics finally came into effect, as they slowly gain their confidence in the match. In 47th minute, Thai import, Daorueang Krongpol, netted his second of the season, after rare fluent passing and slow build-up resulted in this equalising goal.

In reversal of the role, it was instead now the host that took over the control of the game in the 2nd 45 minute, as the Tigers had acted according to coach Sivaji's plan in playing the ball wide in the wings thus opened up its midfield to allow it players to move in.

In its desperate attempt to win the game, veteran Brazilian, Jacksen Tiago in the dying minutes, replaced Indra Sahdan, who, in the last notable goalmouth melee, almost score but much to his agonise, saw his strike just inches wide to the goal.

13 April 2001

The Easter Day Eve match at the Bt Gombak Stadium could easily be put down as the closest clash of the 2001 NTUC Income S.League to-date. Does a quality match require a lot of goals? Many who witnessed the match between Gombak United and Sembawang Rangers would certainly disagree.

Speedy runs, telepathic teamwork, superb goalkeeping skills, brilliant individual dribbling skills, and a solitary goal – these were clearly displayed on the pitch that was earlier greased by the afternoon down pour. Even if the game had ended in a goal-less draw, like they did at the same venue last season, quality football seekers who turned up at the Bt Gombak Stadium last night would never complain.

In the end, the visiting Stallions walked away joyfully with a hard-earned 3 points. The goal came in during the 68th minute through Ismail Fitrey. The 23 years old former SAFFC's Prime League top scorer was presented with a loose ball that was parried by Gombak custodian Stephen Ng. He finished off with a simple tap in and went wild to celebrate his 2nd goal of the season. Ismail had teammate Bamrung Boonprom to thank for as it was the stocky 21 years old Thai striker who sped his way right the right before unleashing an unstoppable shot that Ng could only palm into the former's path.

Other than the duo, skipper Tawan Sripan, goalkeeper Yazid Yasin and winger M Ramesh stood out for the Stallions with their individual skills. Tawan brought along with him bags of tricks to take on any opponent that stand on his way. Yazid showed that he is the king of the air when dealing with high crosses, despite his height, or the lack of it and he collected his first clean sheet of the season last night. 21 years old Ramesh played like a veteran in delivering crosses after crosses from the right flank.

Gombak did put up a fight. Roslan Jasmin was the live wire down Gombak's right flank. Azhar Jamil came close on a few occasions but his attempts were either off target or denied by Yazid Yasin. The closest Gombak came to, was a thunderous strike by Merzagua Abderrazzak in the closing stages of the first half. But the 34 years old Moroccan's shot hammered straight at the crossbar, much Sembawang's relief. In goal, Stephen commanded his penalty box well and he was instrumental in denying most of Sembawang's attacking plots with his vision.

The 2nd home defeat for the ragging Bulls means they have only collected 1 point from their last 4 outings. Some observers feel that the Western club, who had only finalized their 4 foreign signings early last week, has yet to get their players completely gelled as a team. As time progresses, we should see a much improved Gombak side.

But the night belonged to the hard working Stallions and the 2,566 fans, who had received great entertainment value from a fast-paced, action-packed, end-to-end game.

14 April 2001

The Cobras proved a point that though they are a group of oldies, they are not inferior to their younger counterparts. Without the suspended mercurial King Cobra, V. Sundramoorthy and imported South Korean striker Park Tae Won, Jurong fielded an entire first team with just two under-30 players (namely Goh Tat Chuan and Itimi Dickson). Ironically, Marine Castle fielded an entire first team with only one player who is over 30 years old (Zainal Yusoff).

The match started evenly with both sides with both sides having enough chances to bury each other. Unfortunately the finishing touch was not there despite lots of goalmouth actions and the first half ended scoreless. Frustration must have built in when both sides started to resort to reckless tackles. This leads to Jurong's winger Itimi Dickson being booked on the 23rd minute for a tackle-from-behind on a Marine Castle player.

The second half started with the same pace as the first. In the 59th minute against the run of play, Marine Castle's Firdaus Salleh finally opened the scoring account. Thomas English freekick was floated to the far post before Mike Lomax headed back for Firdaus to volley it to the top of the net. Instantly the confidence level of Marine Castle's camp was shot sky high. Obviously motivated by the chance to end their winless streak on home ground this season, the Dolphins attacked in waves after that. Thomas English had three clear chances to put them ahead only to be let down by his own poor finishing. Perhaps it was not suppose to be his night.

The night clearly belonged to the Cobras. Having survived the onslaught, thanks to skipper Selvaraj and Bojan who marshaled the Cobras' defence brilliantly, they slowly clawed their way back into the game. It seemed that the absence of their "twin pillars" of attack did not affect the team's overall performance at all. Slowly through another "old guard" Velimir Crljen, they plotted their counter attack and were rewarded with two goals. Both goals were scored off Crljen's freekick and were largely due to lapse of concentration by the Dolphin's defence. In the 74th minute, Crljen's freekick found Itimi Dickson at the far post unmark, the Nigerian teenager slammed it in to equalise. Toh Choon Ming scored the winning goal in the 85th minute when Amos Boon dropped Crljen's freekick. The veteran Toh, in his usual predatory instinct, made no mistake to ensure his team claim the final victory.

At the end of the day, the soccer "senior citizen" of Jurong survived another stern test and went on to bag the full points. It was a pity that only 2,328 fans were present to witness this classic duel of experience versus youth. For the time being, it is experience that triumph over youth guts. Marine Castle, on the other hand, was left licking their wound and their fans wondering when will they ever get their elusive first victory. Many would agree that the Dolphins better be fast, before heads start rolling in Hougang.

Brazilian striker Adriano Reis brought Rovers their second win with a beautifully struck second half goal.

Adriano Reis scored in the 60th minute of the game. It was his first goal of the season and also the only goal of the game. It was his first start of the game after his two matches suspension.

Tampines fans knew that more goals would be scored when his new striking partner, Macelo Da Silva who was at the grand stand saw his new team mates in action, joined him to form the deadly scoring machine that many defenders in the league feared most.

Hot shot Adriano Reis hammered home a shot through a sea of bodies from just outside the six-yard box after some excellent work by captain Nahar Daud who delivered the inch perfect short ball to the young Brazilian.

Defender Miroslav Kuljanac was stunned when speedy Nahar Daud slipped away despite his closed marking and the limited playing space in the left side of the field.

The match was a dreadful spectacle with neither goalkeeper having much to do in the first half of the game. Both teams gave the ball away far too often as most attacks were surprisingly cut off with ease.

However the Stags are made of better stuff these days under great Jita Singh and they fought their way back in the second half of the match.

Through hard work and good fortune they wore the home team down and in the end they managed to hold the one goal lead and deservedly won the game.

Technical Director Jita Singh’s simple play system seemed to inspire the Stags to even greater heights as a number of fringe players stepped out of the shadows to take centre stage as only six regulars started the match.

Man of the match Sead Muratovic was everywhere in the field. It seemed like his new playing role as a defensive midfielder suited him well. He played well and kept his team within his touch.

Home team was booed off at the end especially for striker Esad Sejdic for not doing much in the game except being caught off side too often in the game.
