Match Details

By Justin Gek

Clementi Khalsa produced a stunning performance to beat the Sembawang Rangers with a score of 4 - 1 in favour of the former at the Clementi Stadium last night.

The home team made the perfect start when striker Eric Francis scored after beating the offside trap and side-footed into the bottom left corner from 10 yards.

The Stallions came back strongly and drew level with captain Tawan Sripan crashed the awarded penalty kick into the roof of the net. Player coach Vlado Bozinoski had no choice to bring down the Thai midfielder Thawatchai Ongtrakul before he tried to shoot in the box.

The Japanese striker Michiaki Kakimoto struck first in the 65th minute of the second half and then put the issue beyond doubt with a second 15th minute before the final whistle.

His first goal came from a long cross from the right by veteran Enest Tapai that allowed him to burst through before firing home easily. Rangers keeper Yazid Yasin stood helplessly looking at the ball passing him by.

Striker Michiaki Kakimoto scored his second goal from close range after a defensive mix-up.

It seemed like the Stallions had not learnt from the previous encounter with the mighty warrior in how to defend and break in number. The aggressive opposition were always ready to pounce on any error and did so with their wealth of experiences.

The sending off of defender Satria Mad meant more trouble for the Stallions as fearless Niweat Siriwong was forced to play up front with his Thai teammates due to slight injury.

Player coach Vlado Bozinoski continued his trend of scoring marvellous free kicks. This time he curled a 25 yard direct free-kick over the wall and on the right-hand angle.

Match Details

By Ko Po Hui

There’s no place like home, how true it is in the case of the Jurong Cobras, as they recorded their first win of the season at their Jurong East Stadium, after 2 straight away losses in the hands of Tanjong Pagar Utd and Home Utd.

Perharps, it was the eagerness to prove to the critics that Jurong without V Sundramoorthy, the inspirational player-coach who was suspended for the game, can still survive that they put up a gallant performance that halt the mini-resurgence of the struggling Balestier Central.

In the place of the "Dazzler", in come the midfield veteran duo in the form of Marko Kraljevic and Velimir Crljen. Good vision and well reading of the game of these Croatian pair proved to be an invaluable asset to the team, as the Jurong frontline split the vulnerable Tiger’s defence into sixes-sevens, not forgetting to mention the speedy surging runs from Korean Park Tae Won and young Nigerian Itimi Edherefe on the wings.

Sensed the danger at the back, Abdullah Noor, the acting coach of Balestier, had no choice but redeployed captain Darren Stewart from frontline back to his usual sweeper role, which does paid dividends, as the Tigers proved to be impenetrable, that once it was renowned for, since the 1st half saw no less than 2 clear chances being cleared off the line.

But it was the middle of the pitch, where most of the game’s exciting plays took place, where the match resumed in the 2nd half, starring Velimir Crljen as the sole performer after Kraljevic was replaced before the start of the 2nd half, to ensure there’s still sufficient ammunition to cripple the visitors’ backline.

Eventually, in the 58th minute, a free kick from Crljen on the left was well met by former international, V Selvaraj, who headed home the solitary goal that seal up the game.

Defender Bojan Hodak almost headed home an identical goal in the 64th minute, unfortunately he had it over the crossbar, much to Balestier’s relieve.

Balestier also had its fair share of chances in this game, however, the absence of a commanding play-maker in the midfield, had limited its attacking option because it forced to utilise it’s flanks, but due to the fact that frontline was slow to move into spaces, when having the possession, most of the time, the crowd could only saw a dejected front of its strikers, namely Thai Daorueang Krogpol and 19-year old Dennis Lim, after they could only helplessly saw most of the balls intended for them being intercepted by the Jurong’s defenders.

The 2 possibilities to see a equaliser occurred in the 64th minute, when national defender Ali Imran Lomri freed himself on the left in one of counter-attacks, only to see his effort blocked by a well-positioned Bashir Khan, who also in the 67th stood in the way of Darren Stewart.

True to its reputation, the young Tigers still refused to give up the fight till the last very minute, as they continued to pile up the pressure trying in vain to search for that elusive equaliser, sad to say it was not to be Tiger’s night, as Lady Luck failed to smile on them.

This Jurong’s first victory of the season though came with a heavy price, as it was over-shadowed for the second straight expulsion of its players, this time Korean Park Tae Won was ordered off the pitch for elbowing Balestier’s defender Rizzal Hashim in the 81st minute.

Will the Jurong Cobras finally shed off it "inconsistency" tag after this match? We will see how it will cope without Sundram and Park in their next match.

SLEAGUE.COM Man of the Match: Stephen Ng (Gombak United FC)

Match Details

by Eswandy Sarip

A late revival from the Gombak Bulls and heroics by Bulls goalie Stephen Ng failed to stop the runaway machine of SAFFC from extending their bull run in the 2001 NTUC Income S.League. Goals from back-again Guinean playmaker Ballamodou Conde and young Azhar Jamil in the 2nd half sadly were not enough to inspire a complete Gombak turnaround. As Stephen thwarted the SAFFC frontline over and over again, an upset looked to be on the cards. Unfortunately SAFFC has again managed to pull through just enough for a victory.

The game started off furiously and it didnt take that long for hotshot SAFFC striker Mirko Grabovac to continue from where he left last week. In the 8th minute, an exchange of passes with Hafizat Jauharmi ended with Mirko rifling the ball into Stephen Ng’s left hand goal with the whole Gombak defence rooted to the ground.

7 minutes later, Mirko set up Thai livewire Kiatisuk Senamuang. The latter did not disappoint. His stiff grounder probably burnt some grass on its way into Stephen’s right hand post.

As it neared to half-time in the 28th minute, it was fast appearing to be a no-contest day for the champions when Rafi Ali smashed in the Warriors’ 3rd goal of the day. Somehow everyone was expecting an avalanche of goals past the hapless Stephen Ng.

The former national custodian however had other ideas. He turned stingy suddenly, stopping attempt after attempt by the Warriors. On the brink of half-time Stephen pulled off a great stop on Kiatisuk in a one-on-one situation.

In the 2nd half Gombak coach Moey Yoke Ham sent in Azhar Jamil to partner Moroccan star Merzagua Abderrazzak upfront. In turn Moey pulled ineffective Roy Yeo back to midfield. It turned fruitful when in the 52nd minute, SAFFC’s Tan Kim Leng was caught flat out by Merzagua. The latter then squared it decisively to find Conde who slipped past two SAFFC defenders before belting a left-footer past a sprawling Rezal Hassan to bulge the net.

Then 10 minutes later, one side of the 4 floodlights suddenly felt she’s had enough. Ironically, at the same time, somewhere in the eastern part of Singapore at Bedok Stadium, it was a similar scenario. Strange but true. Bookies at work? Ahah. Dubious eh?

The game carried on later and more wasted opportunities by the Warriors. Rafi Ali on the break, being one-on-one with Stephen, shot wide to hold the dubious honour of the miss of the night.

Gombak pressed on with Conde orchestrating their every move. In the 82nd minute, it was Conde who let out a stinger which Rezal just did enough to parry. Azhar Jamil showed killer instinct by swiftly stabbing the ball in to the back of the net. It gave the Gombak faithful lots to cheer. But with time running out, Gombak probably left it a little too late. A revival of sorts but again SAFFC held out just enough to emerge victorious. For Gombak the return of Ballamodou Conde should do wonders to their game coupled with the reflexes and brilliance of Stephen Ng, Gombak United can only improve.

Match Details

Written by Jean-Luc Dylan

Tonight will probably go down in the S.League history as the Black Friday. For the first time in six year, 2 stadiums were plunged into total darkness at the same time evening and fate has it that one of these happened during the crash of the titans between Geylang United and Tanjong Pagar.

The Eagles started off looking the better side and they tested Dragan Talajic's goal-keeping skills several times. The back line of Tanjong Pagar tried to cope without their usual captain, Lim Tong Hai, but was futile as Noor Ali torn them apart with ala David Beckham's crosses. The Jaguars had their chance as well. Both teams fought an equal battle in the midfield.

After a goal-less first half, the match opened up in the 2nd half when Daniel Bennett brought down Brian Bothwell from the back. Referee Subash Lazar pointed to the spot with no hesitation and gave Bennett the marching order. Zulkarnaen Zainal stepped up confidently for the Eagles and sent Talajic the wrong way.

The Eagles' lead was extended 6 minute later, when Billy Bone squared the ball to Noor Ali and the latter skillfully tugged the ball beyond Dragan Talajic's reach. With a two goal lead in their pocket, the Eagles started to lift their leg of the peddle, letting the jaguar come at them instead any played possession football. Geylang's coach Jang Jung took Billy Bone off, hoping to rest him for the next game and give the youngsters a chance, it was a move he would regret later.

In the 80th minute, Azhar Baskin was about to charge into the Jaguars' half with ball when everything in front of him suddenly turn black. Bedok Stadium was in total darkness as all power and light went off. Referee Subash Lazar, as confuse as anyone, immediately blow for the game to be stopped. Thoughts of a sabotage came straight to mind as the Choa Chu Kang Stadium had suffered a similar problem only minutes ago. But all foul play was ruled out by FAS director of Competitions, LTC(NS) Chris Chan later during the press conference. Two stand by technicians hired by the FA, immediately got to action and light was restored after a delay of 12 minutes.

It was a different game after the restart. The two team, recharged during the 12 minute break went on to produce 4 stunning goals for the fans. A lack of concentration from the usual reliable Dragan Talajic allowed Aleksandar Duric and Nebojsa to score further two goals. As the Eagles were without the inspirational Billy Bone, they could no longer hold back the paws of the Jaguars and allowed them to get away with 2 late consolation goals courtesy of Steven Tan and Hyrizan in the 87th and 90th minuts respectively.

The game ended 4-2, as the Eagles walk away with the spoil. But the true winner of the night must be the 3073 fans who turn up for one of the most exciting and thrilling match of the S.League 2001 Season.

Match Details

By Darren Lim

7 April 2001

Like all bottom of the table clash, it was a hard-fought and explosive battle at Tampines Stadium between Tampines Rovers and Marine Castle.

With the inclusion of "new signing" – technical director Jita Singh, the home team justified the presence of their intelligent tactician by deploying a new-looked frontline in the form of ex-international Nahar Daud and Brazilian Joselito Da Silva. The new striking pair proved its effectiveness in the opening 15 minutes but Nahar had his bicycle kick went skywards while Joselito was denied by an alert Marine Castle custodian, Amos Boon. In comparison, The Dolphins' twin terrors – Thomas English and Razali Ahmad, appeared to be relatively toothless.

The visitors have the slight advantage of starting all of their four foreigners as compared to Tampines' two (after having Adriano Reis suspended and Adilson De Paula de-registered). But it was the Stags who had shown more coordination and creativity in converting their possession into scoring opportunities. The shaky Dolphins' backline did nothing to help relieving coach Alan Vest's frustrations as the Australian was seen storming towards the pitch side at his charges during the half hour.

The Stags might have the slight edge in terms of match proceedings, but the was no formal damage done to their visitors until late in the first half. Midfielder-turned-striker, Joselito braved his way down the left bye-line before centering the ball to a crowd of players. Deservingly, it was the Brazilian's teammate, Azlan Alipah, who was the first to react by putting the ball beyond Boon's reach in the 41st minute. That goal had made the 24 years old the top scorer in his club with 2 goals.

Coming back from the half time break with a 1-0 lead against their fellow bottom strugglers, Tampines appeared to be defensive and applied a tactic or two on time delaying. But who could blame a team who had come to the game without any point after 3 matches and was on their way towards collecting their first 3 points? Frustrations started to grow in the Marine Castle camp with skipper Anthony Carbone going into referee, R.Vijay's book, for a rough challenge.

With the substitution of Stags' skipper Lee Man Hon by Dennis Suglo in the 71st minute, Joselito was dropped back to his usual midfield position while 18 years old Suglo became Nahar's new partner upfront. The new partnership took just 6 minutes to pay dividends. A delightful cross by Nahar Daud from the left was matched handsomely by the glancing header of Suglo to put the game beyond the Dolphins' reach.

Marine Castle had a golden opportunity to collect a consolation goal late in the game but substitute Firdaus Salleh blasted the ball skywards when he was faced an empty net.

The 3 points gained lifted Tampines off the bottom of the table and cruelly, the victims out of this clash became the new occupant of this unfavorable league position.

Report by David

8th April 2001

The 2 goals scored by Indra Sahdan at Woodland Stadium last night was truly world class by any standard. You can compare it with the best goals scored in the EPL, the Serie A or any other European league and it will still be considered among the best.

Woodland Wellington Football Club (The Rams) lost their first match of this season NTUC Income Sleague 2001 at their home ground against Home United Football Club (The Protectors)

The Rams started as favourite this time with a draw and two wins in their first 3 matches.

Both teams have one thing in common and that is to play an open attacking game and grabbing the full points.

But it was the Protectors who were rewarded at the end, thanks to Indra’s spectacular goals.

In the 8th minutes, Indra Sahdan received a quick pass from his teammate. Instinctively, he flick the ball over Jirasirichote Surachai, He than ran forward and lobbed he ball over the advancing Faizal Ali.

The second goal came from a built up in their own half. Adie Iskander started the move with a short pass to Edson Garcia. He sent a through ball to Indra but Indra let in run pass him to Peres Olivera with a good dummy move. Peres Olivera then sent a prefect cross to Egmar Goncalves.

The magic of Egmar was at it best. With Rams defender Miroslav Kuljanac in close attendance, he kicks the ball to an on rushing Indra Sahdan on the outside of his right foot.

Indra then sends the ball first time pass Fazial Ali for his 3rd goal of the season.

The Rams did fight back bravely and were awarded with a few free kicks just outside the Protectors penalty box. But the entire dead ball situation came to naught.

Mohd Mardani, the former Rams skipper making his debut into this season in place of the suspended Sasikumar did a good job to shackle the Rams strike forces.

However, the live wire of the Rams Ivica Raguz was not his usual self and to make matter worst, he was always closed down quickly as soon as he had the ball.

Overall the Rams did not play badly. The defeat tonight put them in the fourth sport. They now share the same points with Tanjong Pagar at the third spot of the table.

SAFFC and Geylang United occupy the first and second spot respectively with 10 points each and but SAFFC lead with a good goal difference.

I hope the other clubs with young National strikers will follow the footsteps of the Protectors. The SEA games are coming soon and good coaches should know that the strikers can only get better by playing more games and not warming the bench and definitely not by coming on to play 10 or 20 minutes of football each week.
