Match Details

By Ko Po Hui

Despite the fact that they were playing their 2nd game in a small space of 3 days, the visiting Clementi Khalsa’s performance at the Toa Payoh stadium hardly showed any sign of fatigue, which was quite normal from a team going through such a punishing schedule.

True enough though; the Elephants started the game on a much slower pace as compared to that of the Balestier Central, allowing the latter to gain control the proceeding of the match right from the start,

Such a swift enthusiasm shown by Balestier, to get into the act does actually caused a few panic moments in the Clementi side during those initial stages of the game as they gave away quite a number of freekicks at the crucial areas around their penalty area.

Fortunately, the Elephants calmed down and get their act together as the game progressed, much to the effort of Japanese midfielder, Hiroyuki Ishida, whose pace and high work rate had left a deep impression in mind of the fans, who not mesmerised by his tricky run but also his "split-the-defence" passes that were well-meet by his compatriot, Michiaki Kakimoto.

What combination the 2 Japanese imports proved to be, as it was Ishida’s effort to squeeze through from the byline in the box, that made Balestier’s defender, Iskandar Latiff to foul him that referee Shamsul Maidin, didn’t hesitated at all to point straight to the spot.

As the result, Kakimoto made no mistake and coolly slammed the ball past ‘keeper, Fajar Sarib and placed the visitors on the driving seat.

It didn’t took long for the Tigers to level the score, just 7 minutes later, in the 40th minute, national wingback, Ali Imran Lomri, continued his recent fine form by hooked the ball over Clementi’s ‘keeper, Grant Barlow to equalize the match.

The game resumed in a same moderate pace in the 2nd half, which appeared that both sides seems to be clueless on which direction they were heading to.

Gradually it was the visiting side that had slight advantage over the home team, with it’s more organised passing and running on and off the ball, although much of their offences were easily neutralized, probably because Balestier captain, Darren Stewart, unlike his previous matches, chose to stay behind to gaurd the fortress for the most of the match, in anticipated those terrorising runs that might put by Ishida and Fahmie Abdullah.

Seeing that as a precautionary measure, Balestier provided some extra attention to Ishida in the 2nd half, after the damages he had done in the first half.

With hardly sparks being ignited from the Japanese playmaker, the Elephants find it tough to break into the formidable wall of the Balestier’s defence, thus the one-all draw is a fair result to both teams, who were widely, renowned as the "draw" specialists of the league.

Match Details

By Chang Kay Leong

Tampines Stadium this season has been a graveyard for not a few S.League careers, and Thursday night saw another departure from the Singapore scene, albeit from the visiting side.

Gombak United chairman John Yap announced to the media before the match that it would be Malaysian coach Moey Yok Ham’s last in charge of the Bulls, with the reason given being that the team was stagnating under his charge.

"I have to admit defeat, the team is getting nowhere under me," said Moey after the match. "As you can see for yourself, our play has remained stagnant. But I cannot blame the players, they have given their best. With some continuity, hopefully a new coach can take them up."

Unfortunately for the well-respected and well-liked Moey, his patchwork Bulls could not send him off fittingly, turning in a shambolic display in a scrappily poor, ill-tempered 5-2 defeat.

The weaknesses that Moey had been speaking of throughout this season were apparent: an appalling lack of on-field organisation and discipline in maintaining the team shape, brainless defending and a toothless attack.

Credit of course to the home Stags, but by the time Marcelo Da Silva headed in Tampines’ fifth in injury time, you had to feel sorry for Gombak: it was like watching a wounded man get kicked in the teeth.

Early stages of the game resembled a park kickabout rather than an S.League match, and Tampines deputy keeper Mohammed Keman (who replaced the late arriving Prince Emaive) conceded a soft goal after 23 minutes, Irfan Ismail getting his first in Gombak colours with a glancing header off a corner.

Tampines’ Brazilian Marcelo Da Silva equalised eight minutes later though, flighting a brilliant free kick past Effendy Sabtu. It was a sublime effort that looked like it hardly belonged in a match as poor as this one was turning out to be.

It was the Stags who had the larger share of possession and play, but Gombak did look like they settled down a tad after the half hour, and started exhibiting flashes of nice passing football. Central men Ballamodou Conde and Dane Nikolaj Lund were showing some nice touches, but Foo Yong Seng and Irfan upfront were not demonstrating a whole lot of penetration.

The Bulls did go into halftime with the lead though. Conde managed to out jump Keman and a host of Tampines defenders in the box to loop a header into the net, prompting angry shouts from the home crowd.

In the second half though, Gombak, for whom this was their third match in six days, began to tire visibly, and it was another case of maniac defending in the 56th minute which allowed Azlan Alipah to equalise for the home side. Marcelo’s low cross from the right was missed by a cluster of defenders in the box, and keeper Effendy was nowhere as Azlan slammed it home from 20 yards.

From there, the Stags began to take control, and six minutes later tricky Brazilian Luciano De Oliveira scored a fillibuster third, prompting a confident, ‘I told you so’ smile from chairman Teo Hock Seng as he gazed proudly at the cheering crowd.

Despite a couple of acrobatic saves from Effendy to deny Luciano and Nahar Daud, the home side got their fourth three minutes from the end, Sead Muratovic coolly scoring a penalty after Luciano was sent flying in the box.

And what must Moey have been thinking deep into injury time, as the last piece of S.League action he oversaw as Gombak coach was to witness Marcelo Da Silva head home the Stags’ fifth from a corner, totally unmarked and unchallenged?

By Yeo Lih Wei

Finally, history was made on a cool Friday night. For the first time since football betting started in 1999, there will, come the next day, be a 9-Goal payout. Congratulations to all you lucky fans who made a killing or who witnessed history in the making. My condolences to you, however, for missing out on a truly pulsating match in the night’s other fixture at the Jurong East Sports Complex.

For the record, the Cobras won 2-1. But the score line seems somewhat insignificant given the quality of football on display as well as the excitement and atmosphere the match generated. In a match where curious refereeing decisions as much as some breathtaking play raised the temperatures in the stands, Cobras fans will think that the Stallions got away lightly. Sembawang supporters will say, "We would have had you if we had 11 players". Both groups, however, would criticize the referee.

There was little sign of the frenetic pace the game was to be played during the first few minutes however, as both teams took time to feel each other out. By the 6th minute though, Sembawang was already attacking confidently, Tawan Sripan testing Jurong custodian Bashir Khan with a shot form the edge of the box.

Jurong, on the other hand, was not going to take much longer to settle down and they soon started to string a few slick passing moves of their own. Their first chance came in the 9th minute when Toh Choon Ming missed an excellent opportunity in the box when the ball sat up nicely for him. That attempt was to signal a prolonged period of Cobras’ pressure as they slowly tightened the screws on the Sembawang defence. In the 27th minute, Stallions goalkeeper Norazmi had to pull off an unbelievable point-blank save to deny Jurong their first goal and two minutes later, Cobras supporters were wondering how both the referee and the linesman could miss what looked distinctly like handball by Niweat Siriwong on the Sembawang goal line.

The Cobras’ sustained pressure did not amount in any way to total domination as the Stallions continued to look dangerous on the break, Tawan having a couple of shots from good positions blocked. The final word of the half however, came from Jurong’s Park Tae Won, as his shot whizzed inches wide of the post.

That was to serve as a sign of things to come in the second half as the Cobras burst out of the blocks. In the 50th minute, Itimi Dickinson delighted the Jurong fans with a goal as brilliant as it was audacious. Running at the Sembawang defence some 40m out, he looked up, saw Norazmi of his line and struck a shot so firm and beautifully weighted that the hapless goalkeeper had no chance. Barely two minutes later, a stretched Sembawang defence could only nudge the ball in the direction of Choon Ming who rifled in a shot first time. 2-0.

That goal was to spark the Stallions fightback and in the 54th minute, M. Ramesh, who for so long had been criticized for being lazy and sluggish, got to the byline with a startling burst of speed and unleashed a crisp cutback which was emphatically slammed in by Bamrong Bompron at the far post. Match on again!

The goal served to lift the Stallions as they pressed forward for the goal that would level the game. Instead, it was the referee who "equalized" his first half mistake in the 61st minute by missing what from the stands looked a clear penalty when Bamrong, brilliantly turning his marker after receiving a long ball, was unceremoniously hacked down as he bore down on goal.

Two minutes later, Sembawang had a free kick wide on the right. While everybody expected Thawatchai to cross inside the box, he showed that he lacked none of the technique and vision of Itimi as he went for goal, forcing Bashir to palm the ball onto the crossbar.

Sembawang’s renaissance was dealt a severe blow however, when Satria Mad was adjudged to have retaliated after being fouled by Goh Tat Chuan. The Stallions won the free kick, but lost the player.

By this time, both sets of supporters had already plenty to shout about as they taunted and yelled at each other. Of particular interest was a spat between some Jurong officials and a section of the Stallions fans which attracted the attention of the duty police officers. To be fair however, the crowd was generally well behaved and credit has to be given to the fans for creating a tremendous atmosphere in what was already an intriguing match.

From then on, it was the Stallions which lived dangerously as they tried gallantly, but in vain, to sneak in the equalizer. In the 81st minute, a bit of dithering by the Sembawang defence saw Itimi clean through but he somehow contrived to shoot over and wide. Again, in the 87th minute, the Cobras had a one-on-one as Toh Choon Ming bore down on goal. This time, Norazmi, who despite a few mistakes had a very good game, made another fine save to keep Sembawang’s hopes alive.

In truth however, the Stallions never really looked like scoring at that stage and had to withstand a few more Cobras forays before trooping off with their heads held high at the final whistle. That is not to say that the Cobras did not deserve to win for a victory was just reward for their invention and incisiveness. The thing was that the Stallions did not deserve to lose, if you get what I mean.

Finally, I note that for tomorrow’s match between Home and Geylang, tickets are going to cost $8 a piece. I believe it will be a cracker of a game but make no mistake about it: $5 a ticket for this match was a bargain.

By Justin Gek

Singapore Armed Forces thrashed Marine Castle United 7-2 at Hougang Stadium to effectively stay in touch with the top two teams in the league.

Fandi's side now are back on track to clinch the championship.

The day was also a personal success for stand in striker Fadzuhasny Juraimi, who took full advantage of a rare start to score a superb hat-trick.

Superstar striker Kiatisuk Senamuang scored twice in the first period as the SAFFC led 3-1 at half time.

At the death, captain Nazri Nasir and substitute Razali Johari made it seven to make it a highest ever win over the Dolphins in the league.

It was Marine Castle's heaviest league defeat this season under caretaker coach Trevor Morgan.

Thomas English gave Marine Castle the ideal start. He thundered a flying direct kick beyond Rezal Hassan from twenty yards in the sixteen minutes of the game.

But Thai international Kiatisuk Senamuang had different idea, he demolished the home side with his fast pace and powerful shooting. He scored the equaliser goal from his 25-yards grounder shot after collecting a low cross from Dalis Supait.

Barrie Keeling was sent off in the 32nd minute for stopping Thai Vimon Juncum illegally in the penalty box before the latter could score from a great a one-two pass with compatriot Kiatisuk.

Man of the match Kiatisuk Senamuang then scored his second goal from the penalty spot and the warriors had taken the lead in the 34th minute of the game.

From then on Fadzuhasny Juraimi, who started the game because Mirko Grabovac was injured, had no intention to play second best to Kiatisuk and took over.

The Sea Game bound hitman, who has fallen from first to fourth in the strikers' pecking order, duly vented a season's worth of frustrations on Marine Castle.

He took advantage of every opportunity created by his brilliant team-mates. Fadzu scored his first goal with an easy tap in from a perfect Kiatisuk's cross.

The goal gave Fadzu the injection of confidence he so desperately and he has struggled to come to terms with his demotion at SAF.

After the break, Marine Castle kept their nerve despite playing with a man short and in the 16th minute they hauled themselves back into the game with a well-taken goal from English striker Thomas English.

Adrian Yeo and Norisham Musahar combined well down the right before the ex-Geylang midfielder sent an inch perfect high ball for Thomas English to head home his 5th goal of the season.

In the 61st minute captain Anthony Carbone was also sent off for a professional foul. He brought Thai Kiatisuk down in the penalty box before he could round off advancing Amos.

Star striker Kiatisuk however did not convert his the spot kick as keeper Amos guessed right and kept the ball out.

The Dolphins were on the roll for just nine minutes until captain Nazri Nasir restored SAF's two goals lead when he burst through into space on the left to shoot home.

Fadzu nearly scored his second goal a minute later when Amos Boon punched away his goal bound shot for a corner.

That Amos save was just a temporary setback for Fadzu and in the 66th minute he scored his second goal.

Substitute Yunos Abdul Samad picked him out with a great diagonal ball into the centre and he headed home from an open goal.

Marine Castle's reshuffle backline of Michael Lomax, Norisham Musahar and Adrian Yeo had completely broken down and in the 78th minute the rampant Warriors scored a sixth.

Again Yunos Abdul Samad turned provider and he broke down the right before sending over a perfect cross to substitute Razali Johari, who headed the ball into the top corner.

They weren't finished yet and in the 84th minute the mighty Warriors made it 7-2.

Thai Kiatisuk won an aerial challenge and let Fadzu in on the right to complete his superb hit-trick with a powerful low drive that gave Amos no chance.

04 August 2001

The rain was still greeting the Woodlands Stadium pitch when the home team Woodlands Wellington marched onto the field side by side with Tanjong Pagar. The wet pitch clearly affected the play as the game commenced in a scrappy manner.

Woodlands’ Effendi Zanial was given a rare start. The 25 years old goalkeeper, wearing a number 7 jersey, showed some jittery when he was tested by the fiery attempts from Djamel Achouri and Sutee Susomkit early in the game but none of them could cause any damage in the first half.

Just like the proportion of their fans at the stands, visiting Tanjong Pagar dominated the game since the first whistle. Effendi’s counterpart, Dragan Talagic hardly had any chance to touch the ball in the opening 25 minutes. Despite that, the Jaguars found it tough to break the deadlock in the opening half.

Though Woodlands Rams took some control in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half, lone striker Faizal Sa’audi, with the support of Mazlan Mahat, Peter Dajak, Dan Ito and Siva Narayana from deep, could do very little against Dragan and his formidable defensive trio of Lim Tong Hai, Ratna Suffian and Tiger Beer - Straits Times Player of the Month (July) winner, Daniel Bennett. Woodlands’ first shot on target came at the 28th minute when Faizal Sa’audi’s shot gave little difficulty for Dragan to collect effortlessly.

Deciding that he had enough of unconverted chances in the first half, Jaguars’ coach, Tohari Paijan brought on Haris Sumri right after the break, a bid to increase his firepower upfront. This introduction of Haris was proven effective as the 22 years old forward assisted in 2 of the 3 goals Jaguars scored in the second half. Read on….

At the 50th min, the visitors forced Effendi to make his best save of the night when he parried a Phanuwat Yinphan’s shot from close range. However, Effendi’s clean sheet had to be breached one minute later. 31 years old playmaker, Djamel Achouri found himself gifted with enough time and space to pick his spot from the edge of the penalty box.

The team from Queenstown went further ahead 20 minutes later, courtesy of an own goal. Haris was challenging with 2 Woodlands defenders for a high cross and that was when S. Rajendran headed the ball into his own net.

Rams coach, David O’Connor introduced Esad Sedjic late in the game to partner Peter Dajak upfront. The 32 years old substitute pulled one back for his team when he tapped in a 78th minute corner.

5 minutes later, Haris raced the left flank before centering a cross for Sutee Susomkit. The Thai striker blasted it home, despite being closely checked by 2 defenders and one goalkeeper.

S.League frontrunners Home United and Geylang capped a less than scintillating round 21 of league action by playing out a drab 1-1 draw at the Bishan Stadium.

Much was expected of this fixture, and fan spirits were still high despite a pre-match downpour. However, the home side’s cautious containment policy, coupled with Geylang’s refusal to be drawn out by the Protectors’ trap, resulted in an untidy, uninteresting match.

To add to the stop-start nature of the game, referee M. Ganesan was unable to deter players from both sides from committing niggly fouls, which meant that hardly a single fluid move was uninterrupted without an offence.

Disappointingly enough for a top of the table clash, both teams treated ball possession like hot coals in the hand, constantly giving the ball away and hurrying into hopeful but ineffective attacks. One excuse for the wayward football might be that the light drizzle continuing through the first half slicked the pitch and made good passing in this match rare.

It took 14 minutes for the first decent shot on goal to be registered, the Eagles’ Brian Bothwell hitting a turn and volley which Adi Saleh held well enough.

Only ten minutes later did Home have their first good chance, but Lions striker Indra Sahdan blazed his effort from the top of the box way over.

Out of the wilderness though, came a piece of Egmar magic that broke the deadlock. Picking the ball up near the ‘D’ of the box, the Brazilian didn’t even look up before snapping a brilliant shot that rose straight into the top left hand corner of Lionel Lewis’ goal. 1-0 for the home side in the 27th minute, and it looked like ‘shut up shop’ time for Robert Alberts’ men.

With plenty of big men on either side, the slippery pitch and the points at stake, the unfriendly tone of the match continued with an assortment of bodychecks, ankle clipping and brash, heavy tackles.

Alberts had restored giant R. Sasikumar to the side ostensibly to handle Geylang’s Aleksander Duric, but the former Singapore international was having plenty of trouble trying to snuff out the strong, direct Aussie.

Still, Duric was making the most impact of the Eagles’ trio of foreign attackers. Bothwell faded away as a creative force despite starting brightly, and young striker Nebojsa Vukosavljevic was almost invisible on the right.

Four minutes before halftime, Geylang should have equalised, but Mohammed Noor Ali at the far post just missed the connection with Billy Bone’s cross from the right.

Happily for the 3,000 fans, some semblance of attractive football began to emerge after the break. The Eagles started string a few smooth moves together, and deservedly got an equaliser in the 62nd minute, although it was a gifted one.

Englishman Bone swung a long free kick from the right to the far post, where Home right wingback Ong Leong Koen made a hash of his clearance by heading the ball back into the goalmouth area instead of out and away. Keeper Adi was unable to catch the ball, and dropped it straight at the feet of Duric, who couldn’t miss from less than 2m out.

Shocked by the scrappy goal, the Protectors tried to rally and move out of their defensive shell, but were unable to grab a winning goal. On the counter, Geylang could have snatched the game with opportunities for Duric and Vukosavljevic, but the game in the second half always looked to end in a draw.

The result leaves the S.League title chase close, with Geylang retaining the leader’s spot by three points from 2nd placed Home. Even Tanjong Pagar, in 5th place, won 3-1 at Woodlands and are only seven points behind the Eagles.
