When Tohari Paijan claimed that his boys were not ready to mount a decent challenge on the title just as yet, many, especially the Queenstown faithful, chose to disbelieve. This, even more so after Tanjong Pagar had established a 3-0 victory over the on-form Home United last Friday. In an uncanny twist of fate, Tohari's words echoed realism when the Jaguars were so humbly brought back to earth by the Tampines Stags tonight. Still licking their wounds after an almost inequitable defeat to the Warriors last Saturday, the Stags did enough to bring home the points. In a less than extravagant affair between the two, Tampines Stags came out tops, overcoming Tanjong Pagar Jaguars 2-1.
Playing to a crowd of around 2400, Tampines settled into the game faster than its visitors. They had more possession of the ball and better exchanges of passes in the opening period. However, it was Tanjong Pagar who drew first blood. Collecting a through ball from Achouri, Sutee timed a cross perfectly into the path of forward, Haris Sumri. With only the keeper to beat and a defender shadowing him from the back, Sumri showed his inexperience by shooting straight into the post. It was a miss that was ought to be rued as Tampines struck barely moments later. Rudy Khairon, captaining the Jaguars in place of the injured Tong Hai, lost the ball somewhere near the half line. Not sensing any malice, no one bothered closing in on Luciano Da Oliveira. The latest Brazilian signing took heed, laying himself up nicely before unleashing a pile-driver all the way from 30 yards out. Talajic stood rooted to the ground as the ball bulged the bottom corner of his net, giving Tampines the lead in the 7th minute of play. An early goal in a game is essential in the sense that it helps the trailing team re-evaluate its tactics yet Tanjong Pagar found themselves guilty of non-compliance. In sixes and sevens, the Jaguars looked especially vulnerable at the back. Sorely missing Lim Tong Hai, Daniel Bennett, was not exactly at his best and the Jaguars were put up to a revitalized Tampines side. It came as no surprise when the Stags doubled their lead in the 11th minute. Syed Faruk's inswinging corner created confusion in Tanjong Pagar's 6-yard box. After what seemed like a barrage of attacks and half-hearted clearances, Jerry Bartholomeusz's header somehow made its way through a sea of players before squeezing past the line. Though Ratna Suffian managed to make a rather hasty clearance, the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Tanjong Pagar was playing way below par. They were not stringing accurate passes and the likes of Achouri, Rudy and Sutee were overshadowed by Marcelo and gang. Stand-in coach, Jita Singh's implementation of a tactical game was producing desirable results. Tampines closed in on the Jaguars fast, leaving them with only minimal breathing space. Sutee was closely man-marked. He had barely enough space to play his game. Even if he gets past his man, Sead Muratovic will be there patiently waiting. Tanjong Pagar was confined to shooting from outside the box, as in the 33rd minute, when a quick interchange of passes ended with Haris Sumri taking his chance with a low grounder, which, keeper Prince Emaviwe saved comfortably. Sutee then scoffed a golden opportunity to bring the Jaguars back on level terms. Rudy's pin-point cross from the right was comfortably met by Sutee yet his header lacked power and direction, falling straight into Prince's hands. Sutee made amendments moments later though when he curled a free-kick, only to be excellently saved by goalie, Prince Emaviwe. Tampines though had the last say in the 1st period of play. Luciano, who had gone quiet after his goal, wowed the crowd with a pinch of Brazilian magic. Running the ball down the flank, he skillfully negotiated himself past a static duo of Ratna and new Thai import, Thasthanya Phuwongpha into the box before attempting an audaciously cheeky flick past Talajic. Talajic was too experienced though, palming the ball away to safety. A minute later, Luciano replicated the move, only to release the ball to awaiting Nahar Daud in the box. Unselfishly and probably a better thing to do, Nahar dummied the ball to Marcelo. With time to spare, the clean-shaven forward skied his shot and appropriately, referee Shamsul Maidin blew for half time.
The 2nd half started at a more composed pace. Both sets of players were stroking the ball around, neither willing to commit yet. After Jerry had headed a corner over, it was Sutee's turn to do the same. The game had now become so lax that in the first 10 minutes after the re-start, those two headers were the only attempts at goal. Trailing, Jaguars acknowledged the fact that they needed to increase their attacking play in search of goals. Their efforts paid off handsomely. In the 54th minute, Daniel Bennett, pumped a long and hopeful ball into the Tampines half. The Stags tried using the offside trap but was caught flat on their backs when Sutee intelligently kept himself on-side. Strolling, he lured Prince out before placing the ball beyond him into a gaping net to reduce the deficit. His 10th goal of the season was so well-executed that even some of the home fans gestured in positive fashion. Spurred on by the goal, Sutee came close again in their next attack. After beating his man, substitute Nasir Bidin delivered a cross into the Tampines box in search of Sutee. Getting himself behind the ball, Sutee produced a sharp, downward header which Prince had difficulty controlling. Fumbling on his 1st attempt, Prince did well to collect the ball on his next one.
As the game progressed and headed towards the end, both sets of coaches employed contrasting tactics. While Jita Singh brought in defensive players such as Jaslee Hatta and Yeo Boon Cheng, Tohari introduced attacking ones. Yeo Boon Cheng deserves special mentioning as he did a wonderful job sticking to Sutee and virtually taking the Thai out of the game. In fact, after Yeo's introduction, Sutee's only attempt at goal was a well-struck which was easily gathered by Prince Emaviwe. Although the Jaguars piled up on their attacks, their only notable move was when Sutee's header off a corner was cleared off the line and off the resulting clearance, Ratna Suffian did a scissors-kick ala Fandi; the only difference being his had no direction as the ball floated into the sky. And when Achouri's free kick from the centre in the final minute was caught by Prince, it was time they call it a day and go back to the drawing boards.
Tanjong Pagar did not show much hunger tonight. Coming off a remarkable win, they were expected to walk through the game but instead they were walked upon. The Stags deserve accolade for their gutsy performance. Though not their best, they did enough to contain the Jaguars. Unlucky not to share the spoils in their last game, the three points gained tonight will be a comfort. Tampines have stumped many with their performances this season. The introduction of Jita Singh into the squad has done more good than bad. The lads are getting more confident by the game and at the rate they are going, watch out for a late Tampines resurgence.

Home United saw its chance of going back to the peak of the S.League table disappear when it slumped to its second consecutive defeat in front of its own fans at the Bishan Stadium, when they lost 2-3 to Clementi Khalsa.
For majority of the match, it looked like it was going to be another embarrassing defeat for the league contenders Home United when the score read 3-0 in favour of the visiting side. 2 quick goals in the first 15 minutes of the game demoralised the home side making it difficult to make a comeback.
Ex-Police FC player Abdul Wafi Othman opened the scoring in the 5th minute, when he took a free kick that seemed harmless, but bounced casually into an empty net, leaving Home United stand in goalkeeper Zulkifli Zainolabidin shocked at himself. 10 minutes later, it was 2-0 when Michiaki Kakimoto raced onto a through pass to slot in beyond an on rushing Zulkifli.
What prevented the Protectors from staging a comeback was the excellent form of Clementi’s Australian goalkeeper Grant Barlow and defenders Emmanuel Unaka and Fahmie Abdullah. The trio single handedly shut out a very illustrious Home United strike force comprising Singapore PR Egmar Goncalves, Edson Garcia, Peres Oliveira and Singapore’s newfound hero Indra Sahdan. Barlow was a huge stumbling block in the home side’s quest for goals, as he pulled off save after save.
Home United was not its usual self. The majority of the partisan crowd was wishing that their team were to play as well as the Police Band on show. Its National players who were playing with Team Singapore against the 2 foreign club sides might have taken a toll on them. Subramani and Aide Iskandar looked a tired, and were unable to keep up with the pace of the Elephant’s Japanese imports Hiroyuki Ishida and Kakimoto.
Just after the kickoff of the second half, and as everyone was still getting back to his or her seats, Clementi stuck again. Hiroyuki collected a ball from inside his own half, skipped passed the entire Home United defence, twisting and turning them before scoring a wonderful solo goal.
The Elephants were ready for a bombardment by the Protectors, and they wisely adopted a more defensive play, relying on their quick forwards to catch their opponents on the break. It was to be Home United’s game for the rest of the match.
Dominating play, if the match were to be decided on shots at goal, then Home United might have won the game hands down. They kept pounding at a packed defence, but just couldn’t put the ball into the net. They had to wait till towards the end of the match before salvaging something.
In the 85th minute, Quek Hock Tiong brought down substitute Harun Jumaat in the penalty box. Egmar made no mistake from the resultant spot kick. Taking full advantage of the 5 minutes added on for injury time, they scored another in the 93rd minute when Yazid Sawal’s back flick in the penalty box found and unmarked Harun to fire in a second goal.
However, it was all too late for the Protectors as Clementi defended well to hold on to their lead, and to collect the full three points.

The only way for Woodlands Wellington to go is up. But when will that day come? Since the departure of Josko Parac, the Rams have not been able to overcome their striker woes.
The introduction of Dan Ito for the match against Sembawang Rangers FC put a spark to the game, but alas, it remain a spark and not a fire as Tawan Sripan and Teerasak –Po-on and Thawatchai Ongtrakul gain control the midfield.
Fortunately for the Rams, Faizal Ali, younger brother of Warriors Rafi Ali was in superb form last night denying the Stallion "would be goal" no less than 6 times.
Nor Azman assigned to mark out Tawan Sripan was rendered ineffective. The nippy Thai midfielder were able to orchestrated most of the attack from the left side of the Ram’s goal area leaving Azman chasing his shadow most of the time.
The game ended without a goal from either side in the first half. The Rams look a little more dangerous after the break.
For about 10 minutes, it’s looks as they will make something from their build up with some slicking passing but their front strikers either fail to meet the ball or balloon it over the bar.
Play turn scrappy after the first 10 minutes, so Teerasak Po-on decided to turn actor.
He was successful in getting a lot of free kick and completed his Oscar winning performance by getting the Ram’s captain Jeykanth Jeyapal send off for a challenge.
From the press box, it looks like a fifty –fifty challenge but Teerasak Po-on lie on the field motionless, and was carried out for treatment. He got up before even the stretcher reached the edge of the field and return to play as if nothing has happen.
The Ram’s turn the heat on after the marching order given by M Ganesan. Like a hungry lion looking for a horse to devour they bring the game to the stallion but the defence marshalled by Niweat Siriwong refused to barge
The push upfront left the back line opened. In the 86 minutes Teerasak Po-on beats the offside trap and raced down the right of the field.
He sent a cross into the Ram’s six – yard box to Thawatchai Ongtrakul. Thawatchai dummy and let the ball go pass him to a waiting Tawan Sripan. The move caught Faizal Ali by flat footed and he could not recover in time to stop Tawan shot into goal.
Credit must be given to the Ram’s for not giving the battle up. They continue to bombard the Stallion goal. Their best chances for the night came in the injury time but Faizal Sau’udi’s volley and Peter Dajak’s attempt was again foiled by the Stallion custodian Norazmi Ali Hassan. Norazami came in to replace the injured Yazid Yasin in the first half.
As usual most of the chances created by the Ram’s midfield were wasted. Hopefully they can find an answer in Manuel Schromn. Mr Vengadasalam was seen talking to the striker from Germany after the game.
The Rams can do not worst than what they are now and should the German decide to don the jersey of the Rams against the Jaguar at the same venue, he will come in handy as Jeykanth Jeyapal will miss the next 2 game. Nawfal Shahib will return to join Dan Ito for yet another attempt to climb out of the cellar of the league table.

Match Details
By Ko Po Hui
The round 20 must be destined to be the week of the "Giant-Killing" with the previous evening being the night of the underdogs, for their giant-slaying act against the like of Tanjong Pagar Utd and Home Utd by Tampines Rovers and Clementi Khalsa respectively.
So when the 2133 crowd turned out at the Toa Payoh Stadium for this match, they were also anticipated for the similar ending as well.
And they weren’t far from disappointed, just 6 minutes into the game, the sole representative in national team for Balestier, Ali Imran Lomri, out of nowhere, perfectly connected a cross from import Daorueang Krongpol, caught the entire SAFFC’s defence offguard and coolly headed home the first goal of the game.
Maybe because of the number of players being involved in the recent high-profile matches against the visiting Liverpool and Man Utd, barely a few days ago, some of the Warriors’ players looked kind of jaded when the game proceed, which allowed the host, Balestier Central to take the advantage to unsettle the defending champions as soon as possible.
Being the defending titleholder, SAFFC had proven that they were not easy pushover either, as soon as they calmed and settled down, they gradually dictated the pace of the game like a true champions that they supposed to be, therefore in the 22nd minute, they were rewarded for their perseverance with the league top-scorer, Mirko Grabovac barged into the stubborn Balestier’s defence to slot home the equaliser.
In an almost identical situation in the 34th minute, Mirko’s compatriot, Nenad Bacina ensured the Warriors firmly seat on the driver’s seat by half time, when he volleyed home the lead.
To avoid yet another embarrassment, Warriors continue to hold on the possession as soon as the 2nd half resumed play in order not to yield the game away so easily.
With SAFFC having such a firm grip on the pace of the game, it’s a pretty scary experience for the home team, whom at several occasions almost saw the guest increased their goal tally, if not for some desperate defending by the Tigers’ defenders.
Luckily for Balestier, they were given breathing space in the 62nd minute, thanks to the penalty by Ali Imran Lomri that helped to level the score, after ace defender Veselko Papojan was guilty of shirt-tugging an opponent in the box.
However, the joy was short-lived as another Croatian import, Goran Galov put the Warriors back to the leading position in the 76th minute, with a well-taken free kick, that floated over the wall that gave Balestier’s ‘keeper, Fajar Sarib no chance at all.
To make thing worse for the Tigers, Johari Husin was sent off in the 83rd minute, for holding back Grabovac from scoring his 2nd goal.
With 10 men left on the field, coach P N Sivaji, took another gamble yet again, he replaced striker, Yuris Waris with defender Abdul Latiff Isa, in order to push skipper Darren Stewart upfront to add more bite in it’s attack.
It soon paid the dividend that Balestier had asked for, as the Aussie captain laid a pass just nice at the path of Ali Imran, for him to hit home his first even hat-trick in the S-League, after Stewart received a Daorueang Krongpol cross, in the penalty area.
Unfortunately, this draw was not good enough for the Tigers, not only they were unable to close the widening gap in the league positioning, also they missed a chance to increase their coffers after the points were being shared, as it proved to be insignificant as compared to those previous night’s results if they were standing for the prize-money offered by a free morning publication, for any "Giant-killing" acts.
But in the end, it’s a game that worth every cent paid, as the fans were treated to non-stop, end to end action football, though on a sad note, its rather unpleasant and annoying to hear some uncouth "Warriors fans" hurling some abusive languages at Balestier’s coach P N Sivaji, whenever he is at the touchline giving out some instructions during the match.

By Chang Kay Leong
Two days before their crucial Singapore Cup clash with SAFFC, hapless Gombak were handed a 4-0 runaround by the Cobras of Jurong.
Stretched aside and dragged apart by a Jurong team that simply had more muscle and more brains, the Bulls sorely missed skipper Saswadimata Dasuki and Roy Yeo.
Saswadimata was replaced in midfield with Roslan Jasmin (who usually plays at right back), but neither Roslan nor eventual substitute Eric Kwek could dam the pressing power play of the Cobras.
Moving with striking fluidity, the Jurong midfield looked slaughter-house comfortable against Gombak’s always-retreating midfield of Roslan, Ballamodou Conde, Diallo Abdullaye and Iswandy Amil.
Central Cobras Goh Tat Chuan and T. Ramoo were directors-in-chief for the first half, as they were given space and respect by Gombak to attack with aplomb. It was Ramoo who would have the first shot at Bulls keeper Stephen Ng after 4 minutes, but his attempt from a neat passing move involving him, Park Tae Won and Itimi Dickson went just wide.
A minute later, Nigerian Dickson’s cross-shot from the right sizzled past Ng, but was just missed at the far post by the sliding A. Sivakumar. The move was nearly duplicated just two minutes later, but Ramoo’s effort from the right was neither a shot nor a cross.
After 11 minutes, Gombak finally had their first attempt on goal, but Roslan’s shot was a feeble one easily gathered by Bashir Khan. Diallo Abdullaye though made Bashir work harder for his money soon after that though, forcing a close range acrobatic tip-over from the keeper.
Encouraged by the advances, the Bulls tried to gather an attacking muster, and on 22 minutes Jurong skipper V. Selvaraj nearly let in Bah Mamadou when he made a mess of a Conde long ball, just managing to scoop it out for a corner.
Still, it was the home side looking the likelier to score with their slick passing moves. Young Dickson somehow shoveled his shot from six yards out over on 36 minutes, but the Cobras would be celebrating seconds later.
A Park lay off at the edge of the box setup Lions midfielder Goh for the shot, and he sent straight into the corner Stephen Ng’s left hand post. The keeper though can claim that he was somewhat blocked by a defender in front of him.
The game opened up a tad for Gombak early in the second half as Jurong eased up a little, but the Cobras still went close through former Bulls Toh Choon Ming and Park. The visitors also had their chances, Foo Yong Seng unable to capitalise after Bashir spilled a cross behind him.
14 minutes from the end though, it was curtains for Gombak after a disputed goal. The Bulls defence went still as they thought the ball had crossed the byline for a goalkick, but on flag appeared and Park was able to squeeze home from close range.
Substitute Marko Kraljevic then whacked his shot from inside the box into the roof of Ng’s net in the 84th minute, and seconds later Park flighted away from the chasing pack on the left and made no mistake with his 1-on-1, sending it high past Ng.
"We kept passing the ball only to Balla (Conde), even when he was behind the player passing. He is not Superman, he can’t do everything by himself. The teamwork was just not there today," said sidelined-by-injury Gombak star Surachai Jaturapattarapong, watching from the bench.
Gombak coach Moey Yok Ham refused to place blame on his players, saying: "They played to the best of their abilities. (If they still are not playing as a team), I have to take responsibility."

Geylang United signaled their serious title bid by handing a big thrashing to lowly Marine Castle. Just as the all their nearest rivals stumbled against minnows earlier in the week, Geylang is now 3 points ahead of second placed Home United. The visitor’s victory also denied the Dolphins out-going coach Alan Vest, who is in charge for the last time before departing for Perth Glory, a memorable parting gift.
The Eagles stamped their class right from the start. In the 1st minute, the visitor twice broke through Dolphins’ defence threatening to score only to be stopped by Amos Boon heroics between the post.
Nothing could stop Geylang from opening the accounts in the 8th minute. Azhar Baskin’s lobbing free kick near the touchline found Noor Ali, who headed it in beyond the reach of Amos Boon. The 2,316 crowd were stunned but more was to come.
The Eagle’s red-hot chief goal hunter, Alexander Duric, was lurking around dangerously all along threatening to score. His chance finally came and in a matter of 12 minutes of blitzreig, he netted a hat trick. In the 22nd minute, Duric received a through ball by a teammate and he confidently slotted it past the helpless Dolphins goalie. In the 31st minute, Noor Ali again fed Duric in a similar fashion 9 minutes earlier for his second goal of the night. 3 minutes later, Duric completed his hat trick when he blasted in the ball sent beautifully by Nebojsa Vukosavljevic from the left flank.
The big man was still unsatisfied and went on to spearhead every Eagles attack in the 2nd half in a bid to increase his goal tally. In the 50th minutes, he was fouled in the box by Marine Castle’s defenders and the referee did not hesitate to point to the spot. However his penalty kick was saved by Amos Boon.
Obviously disappointed by earlier his penalty miss, Duric turned provider to his teammates. In the 69th minute, he dribbled past the Dolphins’ defence and sent in a through pass unselfishly to Nebojsa Vukosavljevic. All Nebo had to do was to slide it past Amos Boon, which he made no mistake.
Without trying to belittle the host, they did tried to put up a good fight. However there was quite a gulf in playing standards between the two teams as shown in their respective league standings. Credit must be given to the home side for their dogged resistance. They were finally rewarded with a consolation goal by Ashrin Shariff in the 73rd minute.
Unfortunately all resistance efforts were in vain when a Marine Castle’s defender committed a handball in their own six-yard box. The referee awarded a second penalty to Geylang and this time, team captain Winston Yap wrapped up the match with a well taken kick.
6-1 the final score line and the Eagles took another step towards realising their S-League title ambition this year. For the Dolphins, it is back to the drawing board again for their new coach, Trevor Morgan.
