Woodlands Wellington succumbed to a 2-1 defeat by Geylang United at the Bedok Stadium, but not without a fight (pardon the pun). It also stretched Woodlands’ winless streak to an alarming 11 consecutive matches. The home team played poorly by their own standards and must have counted themselves lucky to manage to salvage a win at the end. For, Woodlands came back strongly after the break, and even did well enough to equalise, before Duric managed to score the winner late in the match. The game also saw the sending off of 1 player from each side of the field for an off-the-ball incident.
Both teams came into the match without their key players. Geylang’s Billy Bone could not play as a result of an injury while Mohd Noh Rahman was suspended for the game. For Woodlands, Jeykanth Jeyapal had to sit through a one-match suspension thereby ruling him out of the game. If anyone thought that this would be a repeat of the Eagles’ 6-1 massacres of the Rams in their last meeting, it was not to be. Without the midfield hardman Billy Bone, Geylang found it hard to dominate the midfield. Stand-in replacement Zulkarnaen Zainal did a decent job but he was not active enough to simulate the Englishman’s influential play. Still, Geylang had the lion share of the possession. However, it was Woodlands that struck the first chord when the striker-turned-winger Emmett Gassco connected to a cross and sent his header towards goal. Fortunately for Geylang, his effort was well saved by Lionel Lewis.
From then onwards, for the remaining first half, it was virtually all the way for Geylang. Noor Ali had a golden chance to open the scoring in the 17th min when he took on a solo run into the box and tried to sidestep Faizal Ali but had to contend with a corner. It took 4 more minutes before a goal came at an abrupt timing, in an abrupt manner to separate the 2 sides. The brilliant Brian Bothwell let fly an unexpected 25m bullet from a loose ball, which surprised a nervous Faizal Ali for his 15th goal of the season. Not to be outdone, the lively Noor Ali tried to add to his personal tally when he cut in from the left, dribbled past a Woodlands defender before taking a low shot from outside the box. Alas, his grounder went narrowly wide of Faizal’s right post. It was Noor Ali in action again in the 42nd min when Zulkarnaen Zainal knocked in a freekick from outside the box to the awaiting Bothwell at the far post. Bothwell cleverly nodded the ball back towards goal but it was mind-boggling how Noor Ali can send his header wide, when the goal was yawning right in front of him. As a result, Geylang could only do with a 1-goal lead at half time.
Noor Ali’s loss seems to be Woodlands’ gain. After some half time pep talk by coach David O’Connor, the Rams seem to emerge the tunnel for the second half with renewed confidence. They managed to string some nice passes together and orchestrate some nice attacking moves. Nawfal Shahib, who deputized in the suspended Jeykanth’s playmaker role, was influential and did well to distribute and pass the ball around. Geylang managed to contain the early waves and debutant Sufian Shamsubari, who took over Mohd Noh Rahman’s right-back position, nearly scored his sweet debut goal in the 49th min when his curler from outside the box sailed agonisingly wide of the goal. Noor Ali tried again in the 51st min when he latched onto a pass to the left and zoomed into towards goal. However, with no defender in his immediate vicinity, he chose to take the faster route and missed again by sending his grounder wide of Faizal Ali’s left post.
Woodlands apparently did not like what they saw and came out with their own versions against the Eagles. The speedy Gassco sent a dangerous looking shot 25m out on the right towards goal in the 53rd min, but the alert Lionel Lewis was able to palm it out for a corner. One minute later, Lewis was called into action again when he has to palm another dangerous looking cross from the right for yet another corner. This time round, the 19 year old goalkeeper could not do much when the resultant corner kick reached an unmarked Siva Narayana, who lashed home the goal with 3 interested Eagles around him doing exactly what they were not paid to do – staring into emptiness. Questions were definitely raised about Jang Jung’s defence at the point in time.
Centreback Winston Yap did have a chance to redeem his defence in the 66th min when he met Zulkarnaen’s swinging freekick with a header but Faizal Ali produced a last gasp effort to palm it away, and in the process, injured himself unfortunately. Subsequently, Effendi Zainal had to come in for Faizal Ali. Effendi did a good job but his height, or the lack of it proved to be detrimental in the 77th min, as he could not reach to an Aleksander Duric’s looping header from the far post, thereby giving the Eagles a flattering lead. At least, Duric did what he was paid to do – scoring.
In the 81st min, against the norm pattern in the game, a shoving broke out between Zulkarnaen Zainal and Nawfal Shahib at the middle of the park, for an unfriendly ball challenge apparently. A scuffle soon ensued involving more than 10 guys in green, yellow and blue colours. Although Geylang captain Winston Yap was quick to intervene to separate the both sides, it was too little, too late, for referee Shamsul Maidin to flash the next colour – red. Both Zulkarnaen and Nawfal were sent off for a shower nine minutes short of full time. However, it did seem that it was a harsh decision, and according to an unnamed influential Geylang player, who was close to the spot, it was a scuffle and nothing much. But as the saying goes, the referee is always closer to the spot. Hmmm…
It took another club captain to show that football is still in business. Duric, who was surprisingly fast for his height, raced to a throughball in the 91st min and rounded past Effendy Zainal before sending his shot towards the empty net. Unfortunately for him, Woodlands’ captain Nor Azman Hussain was on the spot to block his goal-bound effort. Off the resultant corner kick, Nor Azman was at again his inspirational best when he cleared Syed Fadhil’s powerful shot from outside the box off the goal line. That proved to be the last chance before referee Shamsul decided to end his duty with the whistle.

At the end of 90 minutes of football, the fans leave the stadium in disbelief that the match had ended goalless despite the Cobras dominating the entire game from kick off to the final whistle.
Jurong attacked fiercely right from the moment referee Francis Lee blew the whistle for the kick off. The Elephants missed their player-coach Valdo Bozinoski due to an injury and had to stuggle in the midfield department against the likes of V Selvaraj, Velimir Crljen and Itimi Dickson. Captain Ernest Tapai was forced over and over again back to defence to cope with Jurong's firepower in Park Tae Won and Toh Choon Ming.
The high point of the match came early in the 20th minute when Park Tae Won robbed the ball away from Imran Zainal in the Clementi half and lay off a perfect thru ball to Toh Choon Ming, the latter succeed in getting the ball in the net but just as the crowd roar in celebration, referee Lee disallowed the goal for an infringement by Toh during his build up to the goal.
The Elephants' chances were further dimmed in the 43rd minute as Ernest Tapai had to be replaced by Abdul Wafi Othman after suffering from an injury. But even with the introduction of V. Sundramoothy in the 69th minute, the Cobras continued their lack of ideas in breaking down the stubborn Elephant defence.
On the other hand, the home team's goalkeeper Grant Barlow did a great job as he denied many numerous attempts made by Jurong and Bashir Khan, now spotting a ala Beckham crew cut, look a lot fitter and faster than before.
Boznoski's new strike partnership of Kakimoto and Ishida seems to show some hopes for the future as the duo from Japan seem to have a telepathic understanding of where the other would be, but their final touches still need some polishing.
It was more of a 2 point lost then a 1-point gain for the Cobras, as their target of finish in the top 3 this year took another step back.

SLEAGUE.COM Man of the Match: Ballamodou Conde (Gombak United FC)
Match Details
By Darren Lim
21 July 2001
Two months! That was how long Gombak United had waited to collect this win. Statistics has shown that the Bulls last won in the league on 19 May when they beat Tampines 4-1 at home. Since then till this encounter, Gombak United gathered only 2 points from 8 outings.
The Western club showed just how desperate they needed the full points as they were resorted to the unpopular delay tactics after their playmaker, Ballamodou Conde, scored the solitary goal in the 33rd minute.
A downpour hours before the kickoff turned the Bukit Gombak venue into a misty scene. Despite the absence of regulars Jorge Steinbrunner, Jaesni Othman, Azhar Jamil and Nikolaj Lund through injuries, the home team dominated the first half.
Due to their inexperience to the S.League, the newly formed Gombak twin assailants, Irfan Ismail and Foo Yong Seng, could not pose much threat to the Marine Castle defence and were caught with offside traps on countless occasions. However, the duo, which was recently recruited from the National Football League, made up their shortcomings with hard running and determinations.
Bulls’ domination could pay dividends in the 30th minute if not of their frequent hesitations to take shots at goal. Skipper Saswadimata Dasuki was put through into a scoring position but the subsequent passing between Foo, Irfan and the skipper himself had allowed Castle’s defence to get into their fortified positions.
Thankfully, for the home team, they did not have to wait for long. Foo had a rare opportunity to break through the defence line, 3 minutes later. He flick was palmed by Castle’s custodian Amos Boon to nowhere else but Conde’s path. The 27 years old playmaker gracefully guided it into the root of the net with the finest touch to register his 3rd S.League goal this season.
Referee R.Vijay had his share of actions in the second half of the game. Within the space of a minute, three cards were issued. He flashed a yellow card at Michael Lomax for a rough tackle, before running to Zanial Yusoff and showed the veteran defender a red for dissent. Next, Roy Yeo was on the cautioned list for arguing.
It was still 35 minutes remaining when the visitors were down to 10 men. Ironically, it was the time they started to put their acts together. Finishing was poor for the Dolphins with Thomas English and Anthony Carbone missing their good chances. Young local striker, Ashrin Shariff came closest to equalize but his flick towards goal, off an Adrian Yeo’s low cross, was denied by the crossbar in the 77th minute.
With distractions coming from the visits of some world-class football teams this month, the Gombak Bulls gave local soccer little attraction as they had to rely on delay tactics to hang on to their one goal lead; their players went down to the ground with the slightest knocks and took a world of time to execute dead ball situations.
Probably agreeing that football should be won with quality play, referee Vijay added 6 minutes of injury time, but Marine Castle could not capitalized on their "one-man disadvantaged yet dominating" second half.

20 July 2001
Unless the game ended in a draw, either side would have their remarkable feat of achieving unbeaten runs put to a halt. It wasn't meant to be. In tonight's encounter, Tanjong Pagar Jaguars kept their torch burning when they swept aside Home United Protectors in a most befitting match of two local powerhouses. Witnessed by a partisan crowd of near 3500, the vast majority, being Jaguars' fans, they cheered their team on to a 3-0 defeat of the Protectors. After Geylang Eagles relinquished their undefeated streak at the hands of the Warriors a fortnight back, the makings were in the cards. Home's defeat to Tanjong Pagar tonight was imminent, however the manner in which they threw in the towel speaks highly of their championship's aspirations.
With an array of familiar faces on display, both teams started off rather sluggishly perhaps an aftereffect of the Liverpool match earlier in the week. Much of the play in the opening minutes was concentrated in the middle of the park with both teams trying to establish themselves through fluent passing and quick attacks. Yet it was the home crowd that garnered enough reason to inject ecstasy into a lifeless Friday night first. Off a Steven Tan corner, Ratna Suffian was presented the simplest of chances that one would find easier to score than to miss. A direct floater, standby goalie Zulkifli Zainolabidin made a horrendous blunder when he was left in two minds and was duly punished when Ratna headed home to open the scoring for Tanjong Pagar in the 8th minute. That early goal somehow dictated the motion of play. While the Protectors attacked in flocks, the Jaguars did otherwise, playing ex-Thai international Phanuwat Yinphan as their sole striker, ably supported by the speedy Steven and Sutee down both flanks. Both players had an overpowering influence on the game and were crucial figures in Tanjong Pagar's build-up play. Steven wasted a golden opportunity when a through ball from Djamel Achouri found him in a scoring position, yet as he squared the ball, the Protectors' backline began rejoicing as they appropriately cleared any unforeseen danger. Sutee, on the other hand, continuously tormented the Protectors' backline with his speedy runs down the wings and shenanigans. At times, the small-framed striker plucked up enough courage to take on the likes of Aide Iskandar and S Subramani zig-zagging his way through the heart of their defence.
In contrast, Home's attacking duo of Egmar and Indra, were so lacking in support that they had to drop deep into midfield on a number of occasions just so that they could initiate any attacking contingency. Jaguars employed a taut playing system, confining their opponents to long-distance attempts. Indra benefited most from this as he brought out two superb saves from Jaguars' custodian, Dragan Talajic. The first was when Zainal Zainuddin lost the ball in a highly perilous position, Indra's well-drilled shot was vomited out by Talajic, who was fortunate enough to foil Egmar on the rebound. Just before the interval, the man who kept Heskey and Owen at bay last Monday, Daniel Bennet scoffed a clearance. Upon falling at Indra's feet, Singapore's current top forward wasted no time belting in a screamer only to be fumbled by Talajic and cleared to safety. As the 1st half drew to an end, the futile long shots at Jaguars' goal epitomized Home's performance, so close yet so far while Tanjong Pagar, though not as many chances had the upper hand in the form of a single goal lead.
Home introduced their new signing, Brazilian Paulo Morellato at the start of the second period of play. Coming in for the ineffective Matkovic Hrvoje, the 4th Brazilian of the Protectors was to assume a rather centralized role and dish out passes instinctively. He did likewise in an instance releasing the ball to an unmarked Indra, strategically placed in the opponents' box. Indra intelligently drilled in a low cross, only to be disappointed, as Tong Hai got to the ball even before Egmar could make anything of it. In subsequent minutes, Indra again played provider when he cleanly won the ball in Tanjong Pagar's half, setting Faris Mohamed for a shot that barely tested the keeper. As the 2nd half evolved, Tanjong Pagar switched to a more defensive mode as if contented with the current score. Sutee came close to doubling Tanjong Pagar's lead when his well-executed free kick struck the upright and bounced unbelievably enough, behind for a goal-kick. Tanjong Pagar had a brush with the law when a blatant challenge on Peres de Oliveira in the 6 yard box, came unnoticed as the referee's assistant had already flagged for offside. By the time Oliveira skied his umpteenth free kick, it was crystal clear that it wasn't to be Home's day.
In their bid to salvage a point, Robert Alberts sent his men on an attacking mission, leaving only two to three men at the back. That only exacerbated the situation as Rudy Khairon's timely pass found Steven Tan with room to roam. As he strode into the box closely tagged by chasing Protectors, the once "Supersub" put his playing experience to full use when he came out tops in a one-to-one situation and coolly slotted the ball home for Tanjong Pagar's 2nd of the night with 7 minutes left to play. By then, the game was virtually sealed and the remaining few minutes was purely procedural. Home United, adamant on pulling a goal back, went on with their attacking ways and like moments before paid dearly. Bare at the back, the Protectors' defence was so exposed that one could literally walk through it and not be challenged at all. On the receiving end this time round, Rudy shushed his critics with an individual piece of play. Collecting the ball off a long pass, he slyly placed the ball in between Mardani's legs and en route to goal, delivered a "picture perfect" finish when he elegantly lifted the ball over a stranded Zulkifli Zainolabidin to send the Queenstown faithful into delirium. As if fate couldn't get any crueller, Oliveira's 1st accurate, goal-bound shot came shortly after, only to be skied by Talajic before getting cleared. Then again, it wasn't to be a warm return for ex-Jaguars' coach, Robert Alberts, as Djamel Achouri's drive on goal was to be the last chance of a highly momentous fixture.
Besides providing the Jaguars with three most valuable points, tonight's game also did the league good. When, in past weeks, the title race was touted to be between the Geylang Eagles and Home United Protectors, a spate of recent unprecedented results has now drawn in two more contenders in the form of Tanjong Pagar Jaguars and SAF Warriors. While tonight's win will serve the Jaguars well, they shouldn't get too complacent as they place an erratic Tampines side next. But for the time being, they should savour the moment and cherish the fact that they are the team to have ended Home United's winning streak. And how much sweeter can a victory get if it is against a team whose coach used to guide and nurture you?

Match Details
By Alvyn Lim
Sembawang Rangers scraped home a last minute equalizer to share the points with Balestier Central in an uninteresting affair plagued by woeful finishing and wayward passing. It was no wonder the goals were scored by defenders as a result of mistakes by the goalkeepers. The home side sorely missed its influential Thai captain Tawan Sripan and Balestier once again showed that it lacked a quality forward.
The match got of to a quick start when Balestier opened the scoring in the 2nd minute. National winger Ali Imran Lomri’s free kick was punched out instead of held on by Yazid Yasin in the Rangers goal. The ball eventually fell to the feet of Balestier skipper Darren Stewart to poke it in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
There were many scoring chances in the first half, but none of the shots went in. Both sides paraded the likes of National under-23 striker Noh Alam Shah and Thai hotshots Daorueang Krongpol, Tawatchai Ongtrakul and Bamrung Boonprom, but the goals just did not flow in.
In the 17th minute, a through ball released Bamrung on the right, but Stewart did superbly well to cover the angle. Moments later, a solo run down the left flank by Krongpol saw him squaring the ball to an unmarked Daun Mathew, but the youngster’s shot was skied high. Minutes before half time, Nur Yusman slipped in front of goal when he had an open shot at goal. On the stroke of half time, Imran Sahib summed up the entire first half by ballooning a shot from the right.
With the Tigers contend to defend their slender lead, they adopted a counter attacking strategy the second half. The Stallions turned up the tempo as they went in search of the equalizer.
Both Khairani Sanuci and Tawatchai had long distance free kicks that were punched away by Balestier keeper Hairil Amin. Alam Shah also had a couple of good chances that he uncharacteristically fluffed. At the other end of the field, Ali Imran had two long range efforts punched away by Yazid, while Yusri Waris’ tame shot on goal was easily saved.
The action constantly swayed from one end to the other, as Sembawang continued pounding at the Balestier goal, and the visitors kept counter attacking their opponents. However, as the game grew longer without a goal, the 1,688 crowd grew a little restless, choosing to jeer the referee’s decisions instead of cheering their respective teams on.
The goal finally came at the end of the game. Hairil jumped to collect a corner, but dropped it at the feet of Niweat Srirwong, who happily stabbed it in to give his side the equalizing goal. He is fast turning out to be a Mr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for the Yishun based club, saving them from defeat at times, but costing them victories at others.
In the end, both teams lost the chance to close the gap on 5th placed Jurong FC. And it seems the battle for supremacy at the "top" of the mid table will live on for at least another week.

In this live TV match that was beamed across the island thru’ City TV, both SAFFC and Tampines Rovers put up a performance which everyone, whether viewing this game at their cosy couch in their living room or paid the 5 bucks admission to see the 22 men in flesh, must be forgiven if their post-match comment after the game, were "boring".
So please don’t blame this writer, if his post-match review of this match, is short as compare to the others in this website, as there’s hardly any spark that occurred during the fixture, worth mentioning.
The most puzzled thing must be the fact that the visitor, the Tampines Rovers who came to the Choa Chu Kang Stadium, on a high note, thanks to their ‘giant-killing" act, fortnight ago over the Jurong Cobras, were rewarded with a cheque, presenting by a free morning daily, before the start of the game, were not able to repeat that feat since then, following last week lost to Home Utd.
Meanwhile the defending champions, on resurgence recently, hope that a win tonight (which they did), will keep their slim hope of retaining the title, although weeks ago, team manager, LTC Kok Wai Leong had gave up hope of doing so after string of poor results.
The Stags started the game on a high, as suggested earlier in this review, in hoping that history will repeat like what it happened when the 2 teams first met in Tampines stadium, when the Stags pull off a upsetting victory over the Warriors with Brazilian, Marcelo Da Silva, hitting a hat-trick, by camping their troops in the Warriors’s half, with all access to its twin-terrors, upfront, Mirko Grabovac and Kiatisuk Senamuang, blocked.
This tactics devised by veteran coach Jita Singh, proved to be quite effective, though at times, the SAFFC were still able to sneak through, on the right and the centre, thanks to speedy winger Hafizat Jauharmi’s penetration on right flank and the ball wining capability of skipper, Nazri Nasir at the middle of the pitch.
But thanks to The Stags denfence led by captain Jerry Bartholomeusz and import defender, Sead Muratovic, Tampines was able to repel some of these Warriors offences.
Much of the match saw the 2 sides playing the same type of football with both teams defended well throughout the game but the attacking play was a letdown.
With both Mirko and Kiatisuk, marked out of the game, the home team’s option were limited, same goes to Tampines, with Dennis Suglo playing as lone-striker, backed by Marcelo Da Silva, who was strangely used a support player behind the frontline.
Nevertheless, the game continued in such mediocre pace, even though, substitute Vimon Juncum’s strike in the 73rd minute, did help the SAFFC to take the lead and sparked a short period of excitement play from the home side, but overall though, the display still made the fans, either switched the channel or left the stadium in a sour note.
