The officials and coaches of Singapore Armed Forces Football Club and Clementi Khalsa Football Club agreed that a fundamental mistake made by the referee changes the course of the game.

The Elephants lost their concentration after referee R. Vijay denied them a penalty. Hiroyuki Ishida was pull down by Razif Mahamud in the box in the 70th minutes.

Coach Fandi agreed that the course of the game would have change had Clementi Khalsa were given the penalty. The score were level at 1-1 until the incident.

The SAF Warriors took the opportunity and launched a quick counterattacked and from 30 M out Nazri Nasir send a still grounder pass the keeper.

This disheartened the Elephants further and they lost their shape completely after the goal.

The Elephants tries to hide their disappointment, but the scrappy play revealed their inner feeling.

Valdo Bozinoski then moved from defence into midfield trying to look for the equaliser, but the move proves to be even a cosier mistake.

The gap allowed Mirko Grabovac to score again in the 85th and Azhar Salleh to finished their misery 2 minutes from time.

The win was not easy for the Warriors until the controversy call. It took the SAF Warriors 30 minutes before Mirko can turn his marker to claim his first goal for the night.

But their joy did not last long. The Elephants were presented with a free kick on the far side of the pitch. Abdul Wafi Othman send it a curler and Hashim Haron headed the ball pass the rooted Rezal Hassan for his first goal of this season NTUC Income Sleague.

The Warriors would have gone further before the 45 minutes mark but were let down by poor finishing and some selfish play.

The game re-started with the Warriors putting a lot of pressure on the Elephants. The elephants just refused to bulge while Hiroyuki Ishida combining well with fellow Nippon striker partner Michiaki Kakimoto gave Veselko Papona and Nenad Bacina a horrendous time with his speed and dribbling skill.

Both side played following attacking football and if the fans told you that it could end in a draw, they were not that wrong, not until that fundamental mistake.

The ended 4-1 in favour of the home side, and the next fundamental mistake happened. One of the reserve official who were not involved in the game was caught into another controversy with Valdo Bosinoski. Both men had to be refrained before the incident flare up into an ugly

The parting words from the official of both team were "this type of fundamental mistake should not be allow to continue before it kill the game"

SLEAGUE.COM Man of the Match: Amos Boon (Marine Castle United FC)

Match Details

By Ko Po Hui

As Balestier coach, Mr PN Sivaji lamented to this writer, at the end of the game, " We should have won." how true it was.

It was without a doubt, another typical display that the toothless Tigers had dominated the game, only to satisfy itself with a solitary point, following the result of the draw with the visiting Marine Castle Utd.

In contrast, with it’s previous showing at the Woodlands stadium, a week ago, the bite and aggressiveness of the Balestier Tigers, seems to have deserted them for their inability to unlock the stubborn Dolphins backline

Perhaps spurned by that fact that he was celebrating his 29th birthday, Dolphin’s ‘keeper, Amos Boon put up yet another majestic performance to frustrate the host throughout the night. Well-positioning and ability to read the crosses well, is the key factor why the Balestier Central’s frontline find it tough to break through the fingers of the ace ‘keeper.

Owing to the fact that they see themselves as the underdogs of this fixture, Marine Castle make Balestier taste a bit of their own concoction of "soak-and-attack" tactics, which the latter for years had successfully (and frequently criticised) deployed for the past few years.

Having to defend deeply in their own half, Marine Castle could only relied on any slip up at the back of the home side to initiate their attacks.

Less than a minute into the second half, the Dolphins took the lead through Ghanaian, Emmanuel Dogbe, which gave Balestier’ keeper, Hairil Amain no chance, as the ball was sent flying into the net.

At that point of time, fears that the Tigers might succumb this "opponent’s one-goal lead", just like their previous matches do, as memories were still vivid on heavy losses to Geylang and Jurong that not long ago happened at the same venue were resulted from the same situation.

Luckily, to the both it’s fans and bench, Balestier didn’t collapse, but instead, they woke up and stage a fightback straight way, and it was rewarded almost immediately.

Captain Darren Stewart was left almost unmarked in the box, when he was at the receiving end of the cross and the Aussie coolly slammed home to level the score.

From that, the Tigers continued from the unfinished business they left behind in the first half, continue their relentless effort trying to break into the Dolphins defence, but meet with little success, thanks to the outstanding Amos Boon showing yet again.

Match Details

By Anthony Tay

Jang Jung is not a happy man. In a match that Geylang United was widely expected to win, the Eagles could only share a point with the spirited Stallions at the Yishun Stadium. Effectively, this means that Geylang would not be able to dethrone league leader Home United, unless Home suffered an unlikely defeat at the hand of Tampines Rovers. Worse, Jang Jung nearly had 2 of his men in Basri Halis and Mohd Noh Rahman sent off after losing their composure in the match, if not for the leniency of referee Abdul Malik.

The first half was a dull affair. After last week’s crucial defeat by SAFFC, one would have thought that the Eagles would come out in full force to claim back the 3 points in order to catch up with Home United. While playing with the strongest lineup they did, more so when the nippy Noor Ali was welcomed back from suspension, but the imagination and the determination on the pitch left much to be desired. On the other hand, despite missing inspirational captain Tawan Sripan and hotshot Bamrung Boonprom, Sembawang Rangers showed none of it on the pitch as they took the game to their more illustrious opponents and played well with plenty of determination and hunger.

It therefore came not as a surprise that Sembawang Rangers were able to take the lead against the run of play in the 19th min. Gutsy Stallion Noh Alam Shah raced down the left flank before outpacing Zulkarnaen Zainal and sending in a low cross for the awaiting Teerasak Po-On. The cross was only partially cleared by Lionel Lewis and later Zulkarnaen Zainal. Off the resultant throw-in, Teerasak spotted some space in the Eagles’ backline and whipped in a high cross to the left, for the onrushing Ibrahim Noh to volley in the early goal.

This definitely served as a wake-up call for the complacent Eagles, who steadily piled on the pressure for the equalizer. The nearest Geylang came to a goal in the first half was in the 37th min, when Basri Halis’s beautifully floated in freekick was headed by Vukosavljevic against the crossbar.

The second half was exactly the opposite of the first – furious and eventful. Geylang’s midfield suffered a major blow at the start as combative Englishman William Bone has to be replaced due to an injury. In came Syed Mohd Fadhil, who, according to Noor Ali, is Jang Jung’s favourite player. But Fadhil was certainly not the fans’ favourite in the match. Even though the 20 year-old U-23 player has been in the scene for 3 seasons, Fadhil showed clearly that he is still not ready for S-League action. His positioning was poor, his awareness was mediocre and his tackling was blunt. At times, he messed things up and had to rely on the senior players to help him out.

Sembawang Rangers certainly realized that and took advantage of Geylang’s weakened midfield. They could have buried the game as early as the 46th min when Noh Alam Shah proved the faster party against Lionel Lewis to a cross, but his bullet header screamed wide of Lewis’s right post. 5 mins later, Vukosavljevic was gifted a golden chance to score in a 1-on-1 encounter with Yazid Yasin, but the crowd could not believe their eyes as Vukosavljevic’s deft shot sail above the crossbar. Geylang did however equalize in the 54th min as Duric turned his marker in the penalty box and was about to shoot when the Sembawang defender handled the ball on the ground. Duric coolly converted the resultant penalty.

Immediately after the restart, Sembawang nearly retook the lead but in an attempt to get past the onrushing Lionel Lewis, Noh Alam Shah clashed into him and resulted in both going to the ground. While Lewis collected himself fairly quickly, Noh Alam Shah never did recover fully from the knock and had to be substituted in the 65th min.

As the search for the match winner went on, tension certainly got higher steadily. It did not help that the young Thai duo of Teerasak Po-On and Kitsana Wongbuddee were constantly resorting to feinting injuries and crying fouls to agitate the Eagles. In a spate of frustration, Basri Halis kicked out at Teerasak Po-On for faking an injury on the ground. His act nearly got himself an early shower, but the referee was no R.Vijay and he merely cautioned Basri sternly, much to the surprise of the crowd. Noh Rahman did not fare better either. After collecting an earlier yellow card for an ill-timed tackle, he appeared uncharacteristically unsettled and could have been issued his second card of the match for several illegal challenges.

However, the ref was less than impressed when Teerasak Po-On again went down after Basri produced a fair body charge on him. Not surprisingly, Teerasak got up quickly after that. Teerasak also made another enemy late in the game when Bothwell refused to shake his hands after he was fouled.

One player however did not let tension got the better of him. Noor Ali raced down the left flank and went close on goal on 2 occasions in the 73rd and 81st min, but the support was found wanting. Bothwell did well in the 82nd min but Yazid Yasin was equal to the task by saving his 20m shot. Bothwell was again involved in the 87th min, when his laid-off near the penalty box to Basri Halis was shot high above the goal. However, Syed Fadhil nearly ruined all the Geylang’s good efforts on goal in extra time when he misdirected his cross to the opponent and had to chase back and defend before Zulkarnaen arrived to clear the danger.

Eventually, both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Match Details

By Darren Lim

13 July 2001

Prior to the kick off, it was like a big reunion at the Jurong East Sports Complex. Toh Choon Ming greeted his former Gombak mentor David O’Connors. Azman Hussain said a warm ‘hello’ to his former Jurong bosses while Zakaria Awang wished ‘all the best’ to his former Woodlands employers, not forgetting the mystery brotherhood of Vengadasalam and Sundramoorthy.

No such friendliness was on display when referee Timothy Dennison commenced the match. Seasoned campaigners Jurong fired a few shots at goal from close range in the opening 2 minutes but they were all blocked the bodies of Woodlands Rams.

In the 7th min, Park Tae Won’s shot from the edge of the penalty box that went agonizingly wide. It took the Korean striker just another minute later to realize that he was more efficient in becoming a provider. Through an Itimi Dickson-earned freekick at a similar spot to his earlier miss, Park supplied the former with a inch-perfect cross, which Dickson finished with a dedicated flip that had Woodlands’ goalkeeper completely stunned.

3 minutes later, Jurong could have gone two up if not for Faizal Ali’s late but timely push over the bar, from Goh Tat Chuan’s long-range attempt. At the 35th min, Park’s jinx was evident again as his shot was denied by the crossbar.

The first half, despite being recorded as a narrow one-nil lead by the host, clearly showed Jurong’s experience was too much for their visitors to handle. Back trio of Bashir, Bojan Hodak and Tamil Marren, hardly had to face any significant threat put up by Woodlands’ inexperienced strike force of Walmir Olivera and Siva Narayana.

2nd half substitution saw Imran Mohd coming on for Toh Choon Ming. The former winger of Tampines and SAFFC went to the right flank position, pushing Itimi upfront to partner Park in attack. That partnership worked as Park got onto the score sheet in the 48th min, a simple one-two with T Ramoo set the Jurong top scorer free. He coolly drew Faizal off his line and chipped the ball into the net. Jurong went 2-0 up.

With a 2-goal cushion, Jurong player-coach V Sundramoorthy decided to field himself in the remaining 35 minutes of the game. The home crowd roared, as this was his first home appearance after long weeks of layoff, due to a nagging injury.

Although his first touch let him down, Sundram’s inclusion brought much live to a then, growing drowsy atmosphere. By his own standard, Sundram did not have a fantastic game. His delivery of passes was easily read and his lack of pace was showing since he came on.

But it was Woodlands’ substitute Faizal Saudi who did just the opposite. Barely less than a minute after his 58th minute appearance, the 25 years old pulled a goal back for the visitors. With his back facing the goalmouth and Bashir Khan beaten by a Siva Narayana’s low cross, Faizal executed a cheeky back-heel to reduce the deficit.

Clearly, a draw could be as good as a win for Woodlands. And that was what Woodlands Rams wanted to achieve. But their dreams to pick a point away were shattered when they conceded a penalty 5 minutes from full time, after Park was brought down by Jeykanth Jeyapal. Unfortunately, Velimir Crljen’s spot kick was denied by the crossbar. But before the Jurong Cobras could cry over the missed-penalty, they were given another one two minutes later, after Sundram had fallen in the box. Goalkeeper Bashir Khan made no mistake from the resulted penalty as he sent his counterpart the wrong way.

A 3-1 scoreline separated the 2 sides, but that did not prevent the friendly smiles from regenerating as both sides trooped off to their shower rooms.

Match Details

By Alvyn Lim

The final score at the Bishan Stadium stood at Home United’s Brazilians 2, Tampines Rovers’ Brazilians 1. In fact, Tampines’ goal was scored by a local boy Aidil Sharin, interestingly, an ex-Protector.

The pre-match hype was all about the Brazlians, but while one set of Brazilians shone, the other set was disappointing. While Home United’s Egmar Goncalves, Edson Garcia and Peres de Oliveira showed great teamwork and great flair, the Stags’ trio of Marcelo da Silva, Joselito da Silva and Luciano de Oliveira were largely a tad over individualistic, often trying to attack on their own without bringing their teammates into the game.

Tampines’ skipper for the day Jerry Bartholomeusz and Yugoslavian Sead Muratovic was outstanding in defence for the visitors, but if not for the misjudging of the offside that led to the first goal in the first half, they were simply shutting out Home’s hotshots Indra Sahdan and Egmar. It all happened in the 11th minute when Edson played a long, high, ball forward that caused the entire Tampines back line to stand still, waiting for a offside call that never came. Up ran Peres to put a 25 metre lob into the back of the net.

The visitors did show enough composure to make a comeback, but their final ball into the attacking third of the field was poor, and against national defenders S Subramani and Aide Iskandar, the Stags did not have a chance. Just before halftime though, Jamil Ali was put through on the right, sent a teasing cross to Azlan Alipah whose shot was tipped over by Adi Salleh in the Home United goal. A minute after the break, they also came close to equalizing when Adi saved Marcelo’s shot from just outside the six-yard box.

Tampines’ inability to score and eagerness to push forward allowed Home United to grow in confidence in search of extending their lead. In the 54th minute, Indra received a through pass, but Prince parried his weak shot easily. The inevitable goal came in the 70th minute when Faris Mohd broke down the left flank, sent a cross to Indra, who headed down for an unmarked Egmar to poke the ball home easily.

The Stags made it even harder for them to get back into the game when Luciano was sent off for a rash tackle on Gusta Guzarishah. It was his second bookable offence.

The Protectors almost extended their lead in the closing moments of the game when Prince missed collecting a cross, allowing Peres to take a shot. Unfortunately, the ball came off the left upright. A minute later, it was Tampines’ turn to hit the wooden frame, when Jamil’s side footed shot hit the post when all thought it would go in.

Tampines did get a consolation goal one minute into injury time when Aidil showed his Brazilian teammates how to put the ball in the net, when his 30-metre bullet hit the top right corner of the net. But, it was all too late for the Stags, as they lost the game 1-2.

It was a disappointing performance for a Tampines side that showed so much brilliance in last week’s ‘Upset of the Week’ against Jurong FC. The team often showed lack of creativity and ideas, and players often felt lost when having possession of the ball. Of course, the lack of off-the-ball-running also did not help its cause.

For Home United, they go 3 points clear of Geylang United in the league standings, and are not showing any signs of slowing down.

In a game characteristic of this unpredictable season, Gombak and Tanjong Pagar played out a 1-1 draw which showed us how mad, intoxicating a brew football can be.

Title chasers Tanjong Pagar were not expected to have much trouble dealing with the Bulls who have not won a league game since mid-May, but a noise cauldron Bukit Gombak Stadium, a reformatted lineup and a stunning first goal from Iswandy Amil helped Gombak snap a four match losing streak.

On a night when the weather was muggily oppressive, the home side regained their passing touch, and the home fans found their lusty voices again.

Gombak coach Moey Yok Ham credited the addition of two new out and out forwards to the lineup - Foo Yong Seng and Irfan Ismail – for his team’s more fluent performance.

"With the two new strikers, players like (Ballamodou) Conde and Diallo (Abdullaye) could concentrate on the midfield fetch and carry, (stabilising the whole team). At least, each department did its job," said Moey.

The loss to injury of chief striker Azhar Jamil in June saw the Bulls flounder in the attacking department like headless bovine, as jab-shot replacements Abdullaye, Conde, and Khairi Mawi were all not natural strikers.

23-year-old Irfan, from NFL side Singapore Cricket Club, dragged TP’s defence left and right with his hard work out wide, while 28-year-old Foo showed glimpses of penalty box technique in the mould of former Gombak hero Toh Choon Ming.

As a result, the Bulls were looking comfortable stringing and spraying passes around the field, very much unlike the panicky side they were in recent matches. Still, despite their pretty approach play, for much of the match they lacked the polish of a killer final pass, as many potential opportunities were easily mopped up by the TP defence.

With Daniel Bennett energetically sweeping loose bits aside and Lim Tong Hai always having the advantage in the air, the visitors were happy to sit back and fire slick passing counter-salvos, sharpened on the whetstone of a 10-match unbeaten run.

On these counter attacks they looked cutting and polished, but the Jaguars were letting the home side do most of the running, and not applying the heavy hand of pressure.

Perversely on a such a stifling night, both sets of fans did themselves proud, their eager contest to see who could make the most noise resulted in levels of decibels not often heard in S.League stadiums.

Not good news for drum-hating media or passionless punters, but it was reverb manna for anybody who has ever wished for better atmosphere at S.League games.

The first goal came after 26 minutes, as expected to Tanjong Pagar. Bah Mamadou barged into Djamel Achouri in the box, and referee Sagadevan Reddy gave the penalty which Steven Tan converted.

While the score remained at 1-0, the Jaguars kept sleek and easy, seemingly having the match in control with their technical superiority.

Still, a dose of endeavour can do wonders, and the Bulls deservedly got their equaliser 10 minutes from the end after plugging away at TP for most of the second half.

And what a beauty it was, combative midfielder Iswandy Amil smashing a half volley from outside the box into the top right hand corner of Dragan Talajic’s goal. The desperately pushing Jaguars then hit the post and the cross bar twice in the last few minutes, but it was to be Gombak’s point.

A happy draw for the Bulls, who missed their injured new signing Nikolaj Lund, but TP’s performance left a bitter taste in the mouth for their coach Tohari Paijan.

"In the first half it was a terrible performance from them (TP)," said Tohari. "All the way just jalan jalan only. They need a kick up the butts, and they are going to get it from me on Monday."
