Tanjong Pagar's strength proved too much for an entertaining Woodlands side as the Jaguars earned a comfortable win.

First-half goal from striker Haris Sumri, and Rudy Khairon in the second half, along with a festive cracker from winger Steven Tan in the dying stages, clinched the points.

The Rams hit back with an 11th minute effort from Esad Sejdic, but other than that rarely troubled the home defence.

Both sides started fast and well. Two goals were scored in the early part of the game. The Jaguars took the lead in the sixth minute. Young Haris Sumri headed home from a neat cross by Rudy Khairon after receiving a quickly taken

free kick by Thai Kittitat Natarue.

Just as the home fans were expecting the flood gates to open, Woodlands hit back. Good work between Nor Azman Hussain and captain Jeykanth Jeyapai released Esad Sejdic who made no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box.

The Jaguars stepped up a gear and were unlucky with shots from Rudy Khairon and Davor Dzelalija being cleared off by the defenders.

In the 59th minute sustained pressure paid off when Rudy Khairon fired home a 30-yard powerful shot past a sea of players including keeper Faizal Ali who was unfortunate and unsighted to do anything about it.

Then substitute Louis Nathan missed a simple chance, scuffing his shot into Dragan Talajic's arms.

It was the same for the Jaguars as Naronchai to shoot straight at the goalkeeper

However Thai Naronchai was outstanding in midfield, and with suspended Djamel Achouri waiting to come into the side, the combination of Tong Hai and Daniel Bennett looked as solid as any defence in the league.

National player Steven Tan blasted an unstoppable shot into the top corner after receiving a brilliant through ball from young Naronchai in the final part of the game.

Woodlands played attractive football but created few chances, Tanjong Pagar's superior physical presence and skill were simply too much.

Like a seasoned fighter facing a rookie challenger, Jurong Cobras, the oldest team in the league, set the pace for a robust match to come since the first whistle was blown, against Sembawang Rangers at the Yishun Stadium. The

Western club went in hard for every tackle, signaling to their youthful opponent that a fiery encounter would take place if they had planted any hope for an upset.

Despite the absence of Tawan Sripan, Thawachai Ongtrakul and Niweat Siriwong who are currently donning Thai colors for their World Cup Qualifier, the home team showed enough composure in dealing with Jurong's rough tactics in the opening minutes. Match was even but it was the underdogs who looked more threatening in front

of goal with their counter-attacks. Bamrung Boonprom, the Sembawang's speed demon, created no less than 3 chances in the opening half hour but teammates Ismail Fitrey and Kitsana Wongbudde could not capitalized.

With better possession in the first half, Jurong came to scoring in the 31st minute when Toh Choon Ming placed his close range header out for a goalkick.

The first goal of the match did not come in a fashionable manner. Toh was pulled down by Nur Yusman in the penalty box and referee awarded a penalty to the visitors. Velimir Crljen stepped up and sent Yazid Yasin the wrong direction top out his team in the lead at the 43rd minute before the two teams went for the breather.

While the home fans were still sobering over the Jurong's first half penalty, a louder jeer was heard when referee chose to wave "play on" after Sembawang's Bamrung was brought down by the defenders from Jurong minutes after the restart. Fortunately for the Sembawang die-hards, it did not take long for the jeers to turn cheers. Thai

Teerasak Po-on sent in a cross from the left which Bamrung finished off from close range instinctively. The 50th minute equalizer sent the Stallions' supporters wild but it was the Cobras who had the say as they made their

seniority in football counted by coming back with 3 goals in 8 minutes.

Large smiles were on the faces of traveling fans as their heros regained the lead in the 57th minute through Toh's delightful half volley. And referee Timothy Dennison got into Stallions' hate-list when he awarded the second penalty to the visitors, after Azmi Mohamud held on to Park in the penalty box. Park himself took the penalty to set the score at "Sembawang 1 Jurong 3" in the 60th minute.

The score-line got worse for the younger team as they allowed their tempers to get better of them. From one of their bad tackles, Sembawang conceded a freekick at the edge of the box. Toh took the freekick which Yazid could only parry into his own net in the 65th minute.

The Stallions strived on and in the 71st minute, Bamrung set Teerazak free in the box and the latter made his chance counted. However, the goal was the last for the night as Jurong managed to hold on to their 2-goal advantageuntil the final whistle. For Teerazak, the goal serves as an early birthday present for himself as he celebrates his 21st birthday on Friday.

Clementi Khalsa and Balestier Central played to a goalless draw in front of a crowd of 2,193 fans. The Elephants finally won a point after a string of 5 straight defeats in a row.

However, Clementi might have felt that they had lost two points instead of gaining one. The Elephants had totally dominated the Tigers in the first half, creating numerous scoring chances and played like a team that did not

reflect their league position of a lowly second-last.

The much respected Balestier defence was constantly torn apart by Japanese striker Michiaki Kakimoto and Vlado Bozinoski. As early as the 5th minute, the Tiger’s defence looked strained. A Clementi cross from the left saw

Kakimoto head onto the bar, but the Balestier defenders were slow to clear the ball, resulting in Kakimoto pouncing onto his own rebound, and as a result, the ball struck a defender’s hand for a penalty.

Kakimoto bravely stepped up to take the spot kick, but his delicate chip unfortunately hit the crossbar. This time, Bozinoski pounced onto the rebound to head the ball pass Tigers’ custodian Hairil Amin, but the goal was flagged

for offside by the assistant referee.

Then in the 25th minute, Kakimoto, looking to make up for his earlier penalty miss, rose high above the Balestier defenders to head from a Eric Francis cross. However, the keeper managed to pull off a save and pushed the ball onto the post.

Balestier’s first real chance in the game came late in the first half, when Thai striker Daorueang Krongpol went for a diving header, in the process clashing with the Clementi keeper, the loose ball was picked up by Ali Imran, but

his chip failed to find the back of an empty net.

The two teams went into the break goalless, with Clementi unable to make their majority of possession count. Balestier appeared to be the luckier side, having escaped a massive onslaught.

The second half was a different story, with the game becoming more open, and both teams having equal possession and equal amount of chances at goal.

Just after the restart, Krongpol’s cross from the right flank found Ali Imran in the box, but again the winger’s shot went over the bar. In the 52nd minute Ali Imran made a mistake in defence, slipping and allowing Francis to get

through. Fortunately for him, he recovered well and Francis’ shot was deflected for a corner. A few minutes later, slick passing by Clementi’s midfield saw Francis knocking down a cross from the left flank into Kakimoto’s path, but all the

lanky striker did was to blast the ball over the bar.

The last few moments was tense, keeping both sets of supporters at the edge of their seats as both teams tried to find that elusive goal that might just decide the game. Balestier’s Australian midfielder Josip Kozic had a great

chance to take his team into the lead when he pounced onto a pass by Krongpol, turned his marker to send a curler towards goal. But the ball whizzed just past the post. Just before the end, Clementi also had various chances to score

when Bozinoski, Kakimoto and Hafiz Esah had shots on goal, but none went in.

In the end, a draw appeared to be a fair result for both teams, as neither team could capitalize on their numerous chances to win the game.

By Ko Po Hui

Shocking, huh?? Wasn抰 it, that was the scoreline that read after referee Abdul Malik blew to signal the end of the game between a much-depleted SAFFC and minnows, Marine Castle United.

A draw or a small SAFFC victory, were widely expected before the start of the match, but a 2-nil win to the Dolphins, not only caused many jaws to drop, also proved to be a great field day to the press folks, who were covering the

game at the Choa Chu Kang stadium, as it was widely considered the 搖pset of the season?

Afterall, despite the absent of several key players, such as the likes of Mirko Grabovac, Tan Kim Leng, Rezal Hassan and Thai superstar, Kiatisuk Senamuang, on paper, the SAFFC still looks far more superior than the struggling

Marine Castle United, as they are left with the calibre of Nazri Nasir, Rafi Ali, Nenad Bacina and etc.

Sorry to say though, there抯 always a saying, 揊ootball is played on field, and not on the papers? and true to that, the gusty performance by the guests, not only saw them won their first game of the season, but only the praise of the 3252 fans.

Like a bee without a sting, the Warriors clearly missed the service of a its 搕win-terrors?(Mirko Grabovac and Kiatisuk Senamuang), furthermore, based on the performance of the 搑eplacement-killers? the young Fadzuhasny Juraimi and Dalis Supait, plus an 搊ut of form?displayed by the trio of Rafi Ali, Nazri

Nasir and Goran Galov, thus it is a matter of time before the defending champions would cracked under the pressure.

Typical misses in front of the goal, such as in the 19th when Hafizat Jauharmi抯 shot was over the perimeter of the goal and the 24th minute, when Dalis Supait headed the ball wide, had summarised that it is not going to be the host抯 night.

Just like a colleague who told this writer before the game, 揝AFFC will start panic, if they don抰 score within the first half an hour? True to his words, they (Warriors) did not took the first strike and allowed the Dolphins to snatch the lead in the 35th minute, follow several wasted opportunities.

Former national U-19 player, Ashrin Shariff orchestrated the move and singled out team-mate, Adrian Yeo in the box, who then claimed his first goal of the season, with defender Hairi Su抲p and captain of the night, Nenad Bacina

chasing the shadow of the 22 year-old midfielder.

Tactical switches by the Warriors?coach, Fandi Ahmad in the second half, by bring on wonderkid, Masrezwan Masturi to beef up the frontline, shifted Rafi Ali to a defensive role [as a sweeper] and Nazri to a more offensive position,

still unable to reverse the sporadic performance.

The final nail of the coffin was struck when in the 83rd minute, Dolphins bagged the coveted 3 points in its bag, with the 揗an-of-the-match? Ashrin Shariff adding his name to the score sheet with a wonderful chip that get the better of the out-of-position, Warriors?慿eeper, Shahri Rahim.

揟here抣l be big changes in the next week game? A dejected Fandi Ahmad made this announcement to

the members of the press at the post-match press conference, when asked to sums up the match.

Whereas, his counterpart, Marine Castle抯 coach, Alan Vest while pleased with his charges?display although he bemoaned the fact that poor refereeing decisions in the past few games had proved costly if not the Hougang based club wouldn抰 have to wait for so long to register their first victory of the year.

Match Details

By Chang Kay Leong

On-form striker Azhar Jamil nabbed a double as Gombak came from behind to crash Tampines 4-1, and in doing so propelled himself into the national team.

Azhar, one of three forwards (the others being Fadzuhasny Juraimi and Masrezwan Masturi) shortlisted to fill the last spot in Jan Poulsen’s squad to face New Zealand, was told by Singapore assistant coach Flemming Nielsen after

the game that he would be added to the senior squad.

It was fitting reward for Tampines’ destroyer Azhar, as the lanky striker struck his 6th and 7th goals of the season to turn a 1-0 Tampines lead into a 3-1 scoreline for the home side. 18-year-old debutant Alioune N’Diaye spiked home

a goal late in injury time to complete the 4-1 rout.

For Tampines, it was the second consecutive match in which they had surrendered a lead, and indeed the Stags knew they had let themselves down, with some of the yellow-jerseyed players collapsing to the field in despair after

N’Diaye’s goal.

The game had started well for the Stags, as Gombak captain Saswadimata Dasuki saw his attempted headed clearance fly past keeper Effendy Subtu into his own net after 13 minutes.

Saswa must have been even more dejected midway through the first half, when he had his penalty saved by Tampines custodian Norisham Zainon, after Abdullaye Diallo was brought down in the box.

Tampines were unable to increase their lead though despite some pressure, although Brazilian striker Marcelo had a dipping free kick well parried away by a diving Effendy. Halftime came, and the Stags looked secure in their lead.

Indeed, when Gombak did equalise in the 59th minute, there was a touch of fortune in the goal.

Roslan Jasmin found himself with space on the right after a clearance deflected into his path, his bouncing cross evaded the diving grasp of Norisham, and left Ballamodou Conde with an open goal for the tap in.

Azhar then gave Gombak the lead, with a goal bearing the mark of a true striker. There seemed to be little danger as Azhar turned with the ball with two defenders facing him, but his sharp, unexpected shot took a slight bounce and

fooled Norisham in the 73rd minute.

Tampines coach V. Sivalingam had brought on giant Jerry Bartholomeusz possibly to combat lanky Azhar’s threat, but the removal of young sweeper Jaslee Hatta looked to have unhinged the defence instead, as they stood by statically for

the Gombak goals.

Realising they had been suckered again, the Stags attacked desperately, but Azhar sealed the game for Gombak a minute from the 90, as he jammed a stiff left foot shot past Norisham from outside the box.

And N’Diaye’s late, late goal with a sprint and finish was just the icing on the cake of misery for Tampines.

"After the debacle last week (Gombak lost 4-1 to Jurong), I think the boys played well today, defending and attacking as a unit," said Gombak coach Moey Yok Ham.

"At halftime, I told them they were playing well, told Saswa to forget the penalty miss, and start the second half like it was 0-0. The important thing was that we did not lose our shape.

On striker Azhar, Moey said that the polytechnic student’s improved goalscoring form this season was due to his training more regularly.

"In all my years of football, I’ve hardly come across a chap as disciplined as Azhar.

"When he was dropped from the (Singapore) U-23 squad at the start of the season, he was so sad, but I told him that his only weakness was that he was not training regularly.

"He was training three or four sessions every week, while the others were doing eight or ten. Now that his exams are over, he’s training much more regularly, and he’ll take it from here."

19 May 2001

Spurred on by SAFFC's abysmal defeat to lowly Marine Castle yesterday, both teams went into this fixture with contrasting objectives. While the Protectors vied to overtake both the Warriors and Jurong to affirm their place in the

runner-up position, Geylang saw it as a perfect opportunity to further establish themselves at the helm. As such, it conjured up a classy game of soccer, not shy of end-to-end action and more essentially; goals. Tonight, the latter had more initiative and desire to win, sweeping aside Home 4-2 in a highly contested match. Though

both teams were evenly matched, perhaps the ever-burning desire of the Eagles to bring back the glory days, inspired them to a performance only worthy of champions.

Filled almost to the brim, the gargantuan crowd at Bedok were pushed to the edge of their seats right from the start. After testing ground, Geylang stunned everyone, inclusive of themselves, with a goal in the 3rd minute of play. Off a free kick, Basri Halis innocuous floater sailed over a sea of players before finding Brian Bothwell, who outjumped everyone to head home his 6th goal of the campaign. That goal set the trend of the game. Shell-shocked,

Home calmed their nerves and played their game. They could have easily levelled the score in no time at all; only to be let down by their own indecisiveness and Geylang's stout defending. Geylang, on the other hand, made good of their

chances and bagged a 2nd goal against the run of play. A routine corner from Bone, found the head of a Geylang player, who cushioned the ball for Duric and with a bit of help from Adi Salleh, the Australian headed home a textbook goal.

Home took heed this time and played a more open game. It got itself into the thick of action and fought for every ball as if their life depended on it. Home's midfield took charge and literally controlled the game, prying open Geylang in

their most vulnerable places. While Edson Garcia and Oliveira were instrumental in the centre, Faris and Harun paced up and down the flanks in search of goal. Edson Garcia, who orchestrated much of Home's attack, was denied a goal, when his ferocious volley off an unorthodox corner, slithered past Lewis Lionel only to be cleared off the line by Noor Ali. Oliveira, guilty of missing a seater moments earlier, made amends, when he capped off a fine run from midfield with a thunderous shot which eluded the keeper but not the post. Deservingly, the Protectors got their break. After Geylang had a goal disallowed for infringement, Garcia's through ball moments before the interval found a surging Goncalves, who muscled his way past a Geylang defender before placing the ball beyond their young

custodian. That goal, not only, sent their musically-vocal supporters into jubilation, but more importantly, it sent the Protectors into the interval with hope of a comeback.

With the introduction of new boy, Australian George Kulcsar, Alberts echoed the sentiments of the supporters to play an attacking game right from the start of the second period. But it wasn't to be. Unlike the first 45 minutes, both

teams seemed to have lost their momentum and had difficulty in stringing passes together, let alone score goals. It was to be a pinball affair with both sides returning favour to the other. At the hour mark, Billy Bone's run was halted,

almost unfairly by the elbows of Aide. It resulted in an unnecessary free kick and the Protectors paid a heavy price for it. Bone summed up enough composure and with much finesse, dipped the ball past a despairing Adi Salleh for his 1st goal this year. Funnily enough, Home did not respond in positive fashion and seemed more contented with defending their goal rather than pulling one back. As if taking a hint, Alberts brought in a fresh pair of legs in Yazid Sawal to replace the ineffective Indra hoping to rejuvenate the Protectors. By his standards, Indra's performance was a far cry

from his usual best. Sensing defeat, Home ventured further up front as demonstrated by Aide's transition into midfield, at times in search of a goal. But leaving Subra and Sasi behind to deal with Geylang's attacking contingent wasn't the wisest of decision and this was evident in the Eagles' build up to their 4th goal. Latching on to a haphazard clearance, Vukosavljevic found an open Duric on the other side of the field. Knowing that he had no support, he teased Subramani before serving the ball to a tireless Noor Ali. Popping out of nowhere, he got behind the ever so suspect Sasi

to tap in the Eagles' 4th goal. As both sets of players and supporters became meeker, they only had one thing in mind; the final whistle. But as if to verify their participation in the 2nd half, the Protectors put up a gutsy performance

in the final minutes and for their efforts, Goncalves rewarded them with his 2nd goal seizing full advantage of a Lewis-Kadir confusion to lob the ball into an empty net.

As the Eagles rejoice in their season-long success and gear themselves up to a top-of-table clash with Jurong next Friday, Robert Alberts would have to go back to the drawing board. Coming into a game of such magnitude on a

7-match unbeaten run, it was high time they were brought down to Earth but to relinquish a record in such manner leaves many a question unanswered. Unless Home intends to launch a serious challenge to the championship, they need

to adopt few changes. And they better do it fast, as next on their list, awaits the Gombak Bulls, who tasted victory over the weekend as well!
