3232 fans turned out at the Hougang Stadium for the opening game between Marine Castle United FC (Dolphins) against Tanjong Pagar United FC (Jaguars) in this year's NTUC Income S.League 2001 season.

Credit must be given to Alan Vest and his boys who took the game to the Jaguar. They almost pinned the visitors in their own half for the first quarter of an hour. The Jaguar could only manage a couple of counter attacks during that period of time.

Thai international, Sutee Suksomkit, did not disappoint his new employer and fans with his darting runs. On the other hand, the combination of Anthony Carbone and Barring Keeling were superb, that gave young winger, Adrian Yeo, plenty of good penetrating run on the right. These runs resulted in a few good crosses that had Dragan Talajic pulling off a few dangerous saves.

In the second half, the tempo change a little with the Jaguar attacking more but Amos Boon was equal to the task on a several occasions. The Dolphin did not take things lying down but continued to press forward. Ashrin Shariff surprised everyone when he took a shot 30 meters out. But it was the cross that denied Ashrin's shot.

The deadlock was broke in the 80th minute by Jaguars' Steven Tan with his usual run from blind side. This solitary goal was enough to redeem the national winger's miss just minutes ago.

The goal or win was dedicated to Dragan Talajic's father who passed away last week.

Last night the fans got what football has to offer, save off the line, missing open goal, plucking from the players' feet, goalmouth melee and plenty of actions.

What a night, it was! Honestly, a draw would have been a fairer result.

(Written on 17 March 2001)

The Tigers, desperate to discard the tags of potential bottom occupier this season and erase memory of last year's poor performance, were trying to fend off the attack of the raging Bulls.

Both team started the match looking very unsettled. It was Balastier midfielder Faizal Sazali who had the first shot of the night, but it went wide of Stephen Ng's goal. Balastier's new keeper Hairil Amin, however, did not share the good fortune of his counterpart. In the 19th min, the former Marine Castle custodian failed to gather a harmless low cross from his right, and the ball bounced off from his chest. The Balastier defence was slow in clearing the ball away from danger, Jaesni Othman was first to get to the ball and he wasted no time in slamming the ball into the back of the net.

With an early goal in their bag, Gombak appeared more composed while the Tigers continued to chase the game. The visitors continued to threaten the goalmouth of Balestier and in the 26th minute, Azhar Jamil broke free of an unsteady offside trap deployed by tge Tigers. With what was looked like Azhar would extend his team's lead with only the keeper to beat, the 21 years old striker had to be bought down by national wingback Ali Imran in the box. Referee Francis Lee wasted no time in pointing to the spot. Thai import, Choketawee Promrut, stepped up for the Bulls and sent Hairil Amin the wrong way and the ball rocked right into the top of the net.

Balastier had no ideal at all on how to break the tough and stubborn Bulls' defence in the 2nd half as Gombak sat comfortably on their two goal lead. Perhaps the downfall of Balastier tonight was Sivaji's tactic of playing experienced defender Darren Stewart upfront. The back line of the Tiger was a pale shadow of it former past, but then, the Tigers looked without bite upfront when the captain had to fall back in defence.

The Tiger was award a consolation goal in the dying minute of the game when Thai signing Daorueang Krongpal intercept a rebound from the posts and fired the salvo in the empty net of the Bulls.

The game ended 2-1 in favor to the Bulls, it was a game of mental strength from the both team. Despite missing the service of their two foreign players, Gombak United is sending a signal to the other teams that they are no pushovers. The same however could not be said for the Tigers, a quote from a fan say that "Look like Balastier going to occupy the bottom spot again this year."

Faizal Sa'audi will not be sleeping well tonight as he pondered over the mistakes he made. Woodland Wellington FC (Rams) played their opening match at home against Clementi Khalsa FC (Elephants).

The Rams dominated most of the proceeding and it didn? take long for them to stamp their authority over the Elephants. In the 18th minutes Ivica Raguz send a cheeky lop over the Elephants custodian to give the Rams a deserving lead.

The Rams continue to press on but Subash Nair stood firm between the posts and was a constant thorn in the Rams attacks.

In the 43rd minutes, Faizal Sa'audi under no pressure in the middle of the field commit the most horrendous mistake of the game. He sent the ball back to Miroslav Kuljanac with Ernie Tapai between them.

The pass was so tame that Ernie has no difficulties intercepting it. He beat Miroslav and with Fazial Ali at his mercy, insulted the Rams goalkeeper further by sending the ball between his legs.

In the 61 minutes. Fazial Sa'audi with an empty goal at his mercy fumbled again sending his shot wide. The Woodlands bench could take it no longer and replaced him with Shawaluddin Zainal Abidin.

The league only Japanese signing Michiaki Kakimoto begins to find his footing in the second half, prove a good signing for the Elephants as he was instrumental in some good moves in the second halves.

In one his moves, Nasiruddin Sawardi stole the ball from him just as he was about to take his shot after beating the whole Rams defence and the goalkeeper at his mercy.

During the press conference, Mr Vengadasalam commented that his boys were in a generous mood and gave away 2 points. He also commented that the team was only able to use the field 3 days before the match for training and they will have no chance to use it for another week as the field will be close again on Monday for further work.

Coach Ivan Raznjevic was not too happy with the referee as he felt that his team deserved 2 penalty call, but choose not to elaborate further.

Sembawang Rangers beat Home Utd 2 - 1 last night at Bishan Stadium.

It was a great start for the Stallions in their 2001 NTUC Income S.league season.

Many predicted an easy win for Home Utd who started early in their preparation for their quest of League and Cup Double. Instead it took a step back, Coach Robert Albert has to settle his side down fast to face the mighty warrior in their next away game.

A massive of 3,500 eager fans watched Home’s new Brazilian signing Peres de Oliveira unleashing an unstoppable right-footed effort beyond the former Home keeper Yazid Yasin into bottom left corner just in the third minute of the game.

Despite the temporary setback, captain Taiwan Sripan and his Thai compatriot Thawatchai Ongtrakul responded positively by fighting hard for every ball. In the 19th minute, the visiting team was rewarded for their hard work after another Thai player Niweat Siriwong scored from a corner kick after a weak clearance from Home defender.

The first half ended 1 - 1 with supporters from both teams were happy with their performance.

Home Utd had more possession of the game after the break. Numerous attacks were created. The industrious Brazilian Edson Garcia combined well with creative Brazilian Peres de Oliveira to provide much needed arsenal to their star strikeforce, PR Egmar Goncalves and national player, Indra Sahdan Daud who made his appearance in the second half. However, it went fruitless.

It was only when Niweat Siriwong was red-carded for stopping Iranian Amir Tavakolian’s goal bound header with his hand. Dynamic Peres made no mistake with his penalty kick and took Home Utd a goal ahead of Sembawang Rangers.

But Sembawang Rangers were not affected by the sudden change of events on the field. Thai coach quickly made some tactical change by bring in a defender for a striker. The Stallions decided to rely on counter attacks. They limited Home playing space. Fast and swift counter attacks launched by the Stallions were effective.

Speedy striker Ismail Fitrey scored a beautiful goal by connecting well with a right-sided low cross from young M Ramesh after some neat passes by the Thai Connection.

The winning goal was more astonishing than the equalizer. Against the run of play, Tawan Sripan fought hard to bring the ball into Home’s third half of the field. From there, he curled the ball into the back of the keeper Adi Salleh’s net with the narrowest angle possible. It was a brilliant goal!

With a man less, brave young Stallions led by the Thais fought hard to keep the home team away from scoring another goal.

The final whistle came and relieved the Stallions from repeated attacks by the Protectors. It was a famous victory for the Stallions to win it away at Bishan Stadium.

The clash between Jurong Cobras and SAF Warriors brought much life to the Jurong East Sports Complex. As the sell-out crowd, and many more lorry-top and HDB corridor spectators, greeted the 2 Western clubs on a humid Saturday evening. Eager fans were seen buying the match tickets from the new Jurong Fan club, located at the 3rd floor of Jurong East Sports Complex, hours before the kickoff.

Beside having a newly-installed electronic scoreboard with some fresh looking and colourful advertising boards at its stadium, host Jurong Cobras also paraded 7 newcomers in the form of ex-Stags Tamil Marren, V. Selvaraj, Marko Kraljevic and A. Sivakumar; ex-Warrior Velimir Crljen together with new S-League debutants, Korean striker Park Tae Won and young Croatian defender Igor Ceko to welcome the 2001 NTUC Income S.League season.

In the Warriors' lineup, two new faces – old Jurong boy Dalis Supait and Thai superstar Kiatisuk Senamuang, were among the eleven players, who marched out of the dressing tunnel, in their new white-sky blue outfits.

It did not take long for the fans to witness the famous Kiatisuk's somersault celebration. Playing deep as a supporting striker behind Noh Alam Shah and Mirko Grabovac, the 25 years old Thai international needed just 14 minutes from the first whistle to open the account for the visitors. Smartly came in from the blind side to latch on to a Dalis Supait's cross, Kiatisuk coolly slide it past Jurong custodian, E Vadevellu, before demostrating his trademark celebration.

Jurong came back strongly and after a few nice exchanges led by skipper Velimir Crljen, left wingback A. Sivakumar was found free at the bye line. His grounder went straight to the back of the net from the tightest of angles for a deserved equalizer in the 38th minute.

After the break, The Warriors repeated the way they started the first half. A defence-splitting pass from Dalis Supait found skipper Nazri Nasir free towards goal. Unselfishly, the 30 year old squared it to Mirko Grabovac. The latter regained his team's lead, as he made no mistake with only Vadevellu to beat, bringing loud cheers from the stands.

But the cheers grew even louder when Jurong player-coach, V. Sundram Moorthy, stepped onto the pitch in the 66th minute. The coach-transformed-striker needed just 13 minutes to stamp his authority. He picked up a loose ball at the far end and had all the time and space to pick his spot against Rezal Hassan for the second equalizer.

Tensions started to build up and there were moments of heated exchanges between the two camps on the field. At one instance, Kiatisuk kicked the ball at Velimir Crljen after the referee had blown for an infringement. That resulted in players shoving one another and the match had to be stopped for few minutes.

But none of the remaining events were effective enough to amend the 2-2 score-line. Mirko came close on at least 3 occasions they became misses of the night. Said a disappointed Warriors' coach, Fandi Ahmad after the match, "If we did not take such chances, we had to expect our opponents to come back us. I am obviously disappointed, but I would like to see as we have improved, comparing to last year's result." For the record, the same tie last year saw The Cobras beating Warriors 2-1.
