As a young soldier assigned in the Philippines just a few years after Admiral Dewey defeats the Spanish fleet and subsequent conquest of the Philippines, to help build roads in the jungles towards Baguio (the summer capital in the mountains), meets a young native girl in Paniqui, Tarlac (near their camp) (the road, now a wide super highway, is still there that runs near the city of
Paniqui on the way to the Mountain Province and the coastal Ilocos provinces); they fall in love...and voila! That's how some of the Straights ended up in that corner of the world.

Manuela married Maurice Straight of Ohio, USA. Had 4 children, all born in the Philippines. One son, Joseph, born in Paniqui, was my father.

I can tell you some about the Straight, Joseph family (son of Maurice) but bits and pieces about other Straight family groups (Harold, Rose, and Carrie - daughters of Maurice). Christian and Jane would likely have possession of old family photos.

Grandpa Maurice apparently took his growing family from Tarlac to homestead in Mindanao...way down south of the archipelago, considered then the prioneer West (although it is South) of the Philippines. They had a ranch there...cattle or citrus and from verbal descriptions, was a beautiful place within the rumbling sound of the mighty Maria Cristina Falls. Of the Maurice-Manuela Straight family were four children: Rose, Carrie, Joseph, and Harold. Did I miss anyone? Only Rose remains. All others passed on to another life. Grandpa Maurice ultimately returned to the U.S. after the kids were grown up and married (I suppose). Heard he was teaching at St. Theresa's in Kansas City, MO. and believe to be buried there. You probably know all these already. I have heard of Milo, Harold, and other family members over the years and the picture finally got organized at the Straight reunion in '98, I believe. I will definitely try to find out who's got the old family photos. Seen them once or twice visiting with sisters or brothers in the Dixon-Sacramento area. That's where most of my siblings are living. daughter of Peter and ex-Countess Maria Luisa Vega-Alcantara (yes, extensive research revealed that the ancient Vega family were nobles of the Spanish court. Not sure how the Vega family ended up in the Philippines; further research still going on. Maria Luisa might have been the first to rebel against the old family rule (never marry a commoner, much less a native). Last
heard of Grandpa Peter was in California; he was over a 100 then. A few yearsbefore then, I sat with him in Miami to talk about family history. His mind was as sharp and keen as a 25-year old's. His penmanship even at such advanced age was simply beautiful, flowing and artful. He vividly recounted stories that go back in the early 1900s. He lived in a small house right smack in the middle of downtown Miami, surrounded by tall buildings. Developers have been looking for ways to get him to give up his house and property so they can expand their parking lot. Finally, they got their wish after one of his daughters persuaded him to move to California (so his children who lived there could look after him) in a nursing home. Stripped of his dignity and pride, he
slowly deterriorated, lost the will to live...and finally gave up.
