Rumors and Myths

In this section, I will (or attempt to) clear up any rumors and myths concerning Slayers. Whenever I hear a new one that can be answered, I will post it here.

The bottom line is, most Slayers rumors are false, so DON'T SPREAD THEM unless you have solid evidence (an official webpage, an official picture, something that came straight from Mr. Kanzaka's mouth, etc.)!

Rumor #1: Naga and Ameria are sisters.
This rumor is true. Naga is the first daugher of Philionel El Di Saillune, and Ameria is the second. Naga's real full name is Gracia Ul Naga Saillune. More information on why she left Saillune is explained in her
character section.

Rumor #2: Mazoku cannot love.
This rumor is true. Mr. Kanzaka has never said, "Mazoku cannot love," but he has not said the opposite, either. Mazoku thrive off of negative feelings, and generally love is one of the most (if not the most) positive emotions that can be felt. Experiencing such a powerful, happy emotion would be lethal to an evil spirit such as a mazoku. Higher-level mazoku such as Xelloss are not an exception to this rule. One might state that "ryuuzoku can hate" as a solid argument, but it is a fact that mazoku are completely different from ryuuzoku, humans, and the rest of the creatures in the world that have physical bodies. Mazoku are NOT the opposite of ryuuzoku. They are in their own classification.

Rumor #3: Gourry is the decendent of Rowdy and Meliroon.
This rumor is false. The scenario for Slayers: The Motion Picture was not written by Mr. Kanzaka, and he has said himself that it would be impossible for Rowdy and Meliroon to have a child together. Meliroon, and elf, would live many more years than Rowdy, a human. When Rowdy would be an old man, Meliroon would still be fairly young. Therefore, Gourry does not have elfish blood in him.

Rumor #4: There is a fourth Slayers series titled "Slayers AGAIN."
This rumor is false. Around 1999, Takashi Watanabe posted a message to his website's message board stating that there MIGHT be a new season of either Slayers or Lost Universe. This never happened, for either series. Nevertheless, this started a flood of rumors that a new series was in production. Most people seem to think the storyline involves the second plot of the novel series, which was never animated. This is definitely false. There are no current plans to make a fourth Slayers series. If there were, the Japanese fan community would be in an uproar, and we would certainly hear about it in Japanese anime magazines such as Newtype and Animage.

Rumor #5: Lost Universe takes place after Slayers.
This rumor is false. Lost Universe takes place many years before Slayers. In LU, Dark Star and Vorfeed are still separate beings in opposition to each other. By the time Slayers TRY comes along, these two beings are fused together in an attempt to sabotage their world. In the end of TRY, Dark Star (and most likely Vorfeed as well) were destroyed.

Rumor #6: The Lord of Nightmares is evil.
This rumor is false. The Lord of Nightmares is neutral. She created all the worlds and rules over all the creatures in them, including mazoku, shinzoku, ryuuzoku, and humans.

Rumor #7: Xelloss is Zelas Metallium's general and priest.
This rumor is false. Xelloss is only Zelas' priest. She does not have a general.

Rumor #8: Xelloss does not have a last name.
This rumor is true. Many people attach "Metallium" to the end of his name, since it is part of the name of his master, but it is not official. On all official Slayers texts, his name is listed as simply "Xelloss," even when all other characters have their full names displayed.

Rumor #9: Luna Inverse is a skilled sorceress.
This rumor is false. Luna is a skilled swordswoman. If Luna were a sorceress, then Lina most likely would not have taken up sorcery as an antidote to her sister's superiority.

Rumor #10: Xelloss used to be a human.
This rumor is false. Xelloss was created by Zelas Metallium for the purpose of being her servant. He has always been a pure mazoku.

Rumor #11: Luna Inverse and Zelas Metallium are best friends.
This rumor is false. It was most likely spawned by someone who mistook the dog in Luna's NEXT eyecatch for Zelas, who takes the form of a wolf on occasion. In reality, the dog was Spot, Luna's name for her new pet Dilgear.

Rumor #12: Zelas Metallium and Deep Sea Dolphin don't get along.
This rumor is false. There is no evidence for this claim. They appeared together in the final Slayers (honpen) novel, Demon Slayers, and they seemed to get along fine.

Rumor #13: Deep Sea Dolphin is insane and is L-sama's favorite.
This rumor is false. People often say that Xelloss once played a trick on Dolphin to make her insane, but this never happened. As for the second part, supposedly being insane makes you buddies with the Lord of Nightmares? I don't think so.

Rumor #14: Slayers is going to be aired edited on FOX.
This rumor is true and false. There were plans to air Slayers on FOX Kids or ABC Family, but they fell through, as the editing was deemed too extensive (not to mention the militant protests from the fan community). Want proof that this was really going to happen? Read this quote from Lisa Ortiz: "We can't say blood or kill on TV, so they really are replacing words that say blood and kill- and probably some boob jokes. ... They had to change 'crimson blood that flows' to 'crimson river that flows.' I thought that was very hysterical to me, being a woman, considering the way Lina loses her powers. ... It'll be nice to see Lina. I know they'll be changing stuff and fans will ask 'What did they do?' I feel the same way, but it's a good validation because it was my baby- I say that's cool."

Rumor #15: Filia is the last of the golden dragons.
This rumor is false. She is the last golden dragon to worship Karyuu-ou (Flarelord). Other golden dragons, such as the ones at Dragon's Peak (Milgazia, etc.) still lived on after TRY, worshipping the other three dragon lords.

Rumor #16: "Slayers Perfect" is the name of the first Slayers movie.
This rumor is false. "Slayers Perfect" was made up by a fan. The official titles for the first Slayers movie are simply "Slayers" or "Slayers: The Motion Picture." Want evidence? Try to find an official Japanese product with the name "Slayers Perfect" on it. I bet you can't.

Rumor #17: "Ganbare Necromancer" is a Slayers song.
This rumor is false. First of all, that isn't even the real title of the song. It's actually called "Good Luck!" and it appeared on Megumi Hayashibara's "Iravati" album, but not on anything related to Slayers.

Rumor #18: Software Sculptors changed the name of Slayers when they didn't need to.
This rumor is false. SS markets the Slayers TV series as "The Slayers." This is because there was already something copyrighted in America as "Slayers," so it couldn't be used. ADV got around this by naming their releases "Slayers: The Motion Picture" and "Slayers: Book of Spells." This is also why Rui Araizumi's manga (called "Slayers" in Japan) had to be renamed "Slayers: Medieval Mayhem" for the domestic release.

Rumor #19: ADV changed the names of the spells when they didn't need to.
This rumor is false. The names of the spells are different than their actual names (ex: "Dil Brand" becoming "Explosion Array") because the scripts that were sent to them only included the kanji characters that named the spells instead of the furigana that should have been over the kanji. Where the kanji would mean one thing ("Explosion Array"), the furigana that should have been there would mean the actual name the spell is called ("Dil Brand"). The same thing happened with Software Sculptors and their translation. For example, Maryuu-ou's kanji says "Demon Dragon King," but the furigana says "Chaos Dragon." It's not the fault of the translators, but the person who sent the scripts.

Rumor #20: Our real-life world is Chaotic Blue's.
This rumor is most likely false. Most signs point to Dark Star's world. Most people tend to think our world is that of Chaotic Blue, probably because of the world "blue," which could be associated with the color of our sky and sea. But, one would have to remember that the sky and sea in both Ruby Eye and Dark Star's world is also blue, so this rationalization isn't really valid. The evidence that suggests we are of Dark Star's world can mostly be found in Lost Universe. The planets with which we are familiar are present, namely Earth and Mars. Millie's gun is enscripted with "Earth Federation," Rail is from Earth, and Nina is from Mars. Also, like our own world, there is no magic used, with advances based on technology as opposed to the supernatural. Worth observing is that there are no mazoku roaming around in Dark Star's world, but the only place in Ruby Eye's world where they do is inside the barrier. Outside, the people don't really need strong magic because there aren't strong mazoku to fight. In conclusion, it makes more sense to assume we are of Dark Star's world (only centuries in the past) than to blindly guess that we come from the worlds of Chaotic Blue and/or Death Fog.
