Dawn is the newest character on Buffy, she is the sister of Buffy who only appeared in Season 5. It was a bold move by the producers to suddenly introduce a new character and pass her off as a sister, but it paid off.

From the world go we know something is wrong, but Buffy and the Slayerettes have no idea, until Buffy goes into a trance to find out what is wrong with her Mum, and notices that images of Dawn, and Dawn herself keep fading. She resuces a monk who tells her that they created her, and Buffy must protect her. Later on we find out that Dawn is the Key, who Glory must use in order to return to her realm and destroy the world.

Dawn's past are all just memories that Buffy and everyone else knows, but has never happened.

Dawn is a whiny, annoying Teenager but play's a vital role in Season 5.
