Anya started life a thousand years ago as a normal Human child. She married a viking who slept with other woman so she turned him into a Troll as a punishment. It was then she was offered a job by D'Hoffryn and he made her a Vengance Demon. A few years ago she came to Sunnydale to cast a wish for an unknowing Cordilea and had her pendant smashed making her Human (Anya, not Cordilea!).

She started taking a liking to Xander, and so slept with him so she could ignore him again, this didn't work, and she fell in love with him.

In Season 6 her and Xander try to get married but a Demon Anya 'made' as a Vengance Demon shows up and scares Xander off. He calls off the Wedding and Anya becomes a Demon again (thus the Ex-Ex-Demon at the top of the page).

I think that Xander and Anya will get back together in Season 7 because Anya is impressed that Xander saved the world, and she doesn't want to hurt anyone, which really makes her job very pointless!
