Sympathy

part eight

The scenery changed abruptly. They were in a garden. A small country house was in the background, about thirty metres away. A little boy with a red raincoat opened the front door.

"Oh, look!" said Angelus, "A little boy... I wonder who that is?"

Giles, of course, recognized himself in this red bundle of nerves. He also recognized the time. This moment was engraved in his memory forever and he was now living it over again as an outsider. He was convinced that if he touched the little boy, he would go straight through him. After all, he was a ghost. The whole scene had an otherworldly quality to it, as if they had pulled a curtain, or shrouded reality in another, he didn't quite know. He also knew what happened that day, and why his memory was so clear.

"Anne ! Anne, play with me !"

"You haven't chosen very well." he said to Angelus. "I was only five when this happened., and Anne was twelve years older than me. I hardly knew her."

"Are you sure? You saw everything, though. Maybe you don't remember anything, but I can read you like a book, Rupie. Why do you think you became a watcher? D'you want a reminder? The show's just about to start..."

"Anne? Where are you, Anne?"

The little boy went toward the shed at the bottom of the garden.

"No..."

"Ho, ho! No so tough, then, are we?"

"Leave her alone !"

"Don't tell me that, Rupie. This happened ages ago. Don't spoil my fun."

"Monster!"

"Sush !"

They were now inside the garden shed. Anne was reduced to a palpitating mass of exsanguinated flesh.

 "No, no..."

 ***

"You won't get me. I wont give you that pleasure."

"I know. I'll take it. But I really feel sorry for you, Rupie, I really do. It's been decades since, and you've been chasing monsters and running away most of the time. What are you thinking? That you might bring her back? Well, it won't. But if it helps, I'll tell you this vampire was slain ages ago. But I'm getting bored. Let's fast-forward, shall we?"

"I think not." Giles and Angelus turned to the voice. "Besides, you don't really belong here, and I should know. I couldn't bear living with you full time." Giles couldn't believe his eyes.

It was Jenny. She hadn't changed since he'd last seen her. Angelus couldn't believe it either.

"You.... you're dead !

-Yeah, but I'm not like you. I don't brag about it. And I don't steal life from others.

Giles was lost for words. This was just too much. "You were in here all along?

- Yes. I helped you, didn't I? Every time you were lost, I helped you out.And the reason why this is happening is partly my doing. After all, I suggested you use the sympathy spell in the first spell. But I'm only trying to repay you for what you've done to me.

- What was that?

- You've kept me alive. And in the brief time we've known each other I was more alive than I'd ever been. And I always will be. Unless he takes control of you.

She advanced slowly towards Angelus.

"You know what they did to bad boys when I was little?" The scenery was changing, but not quite so abruptly as it had at first. Giles was suprised to see they were back in Angel's soul.

"I don't want to know." he said, suddenly afraid, "I'll be good, I promise."

"Oh yeah, you will. But not before I lock you up."

Angelus had been bbacking away from Jenny, who was now exactly as Giles had always seen her: a radiant angel. But right now she wasn't the "Welcome to Paradise" type of an angel, more like one who would be on first row at Armageddon. An angel of vengeance... Angelus backed away further still, into a small recess. It was only when he reached the wall behind him that he suddenly understood.

"No !"

Jenny punched the side of the recess. The ceiling collapsed, forming a thick wall which separated Giles from Angelus. She turned to him next.

"Jenny, how can I thank you?

- You don't have to. It had to be done. But you have lots more

to do ?

- Calm down, Cordelia. I'm sure we'll get him out of there somehow." Xander was pleading.

"He's waking up !" Angel said.

"How are you feeling ?

- Drowsy.

- You couldn't ! You've been out of it for twelve hours !"

Giles saw it was pitch dark outside. But he wasn't in the least worried. "Well... I imagine you should all head home. He looked at Cordelia. "I don't think Mr. Hansworth would like you missing tomorrow's lesson as well."

They all left the library together. Well, almost. Giles suddenly worried about Buffy. How had her day been? Then he realized that, however much he thought of her as his daughter, this was one day at work he could never talk to her about. Looking at Angel, he saw he thought the same.

He locked the library door behind him.In the deserted room, the cage was closed.
