Summary: A rewrite of ‘The Prom’ the way it should have happened.

A/N: Since we all know what happened in ‘The Prom’ I am starting this fic from the point when Jonathon is reading his speech.

*************************************

“It's from all of us, and it's got written here, ‘Buffy Summers. Class Protector.’” Buffy is stunned. Near tears as she steps toward the stage, and the kids make big with the clapping. Buffy reaches the stage and Jonathan hands the umbrella down to her. She takes it and faces the crowd, no idea what to do. Willow, Oz, Xander and Giles are all clapping and cheering.

*

Later on in the night Wesley moves to Giles, clearly anxious.

“Mr. Giles. I'd like your opinion. While the last thing I wish to do is model bad behavior in front of  impressionable youth - I wonder if asking Ms. Chase for a dance would –“ Giles, clearly fed up with the whole matter, cuts him off.

“For God's sake man. She's eighteen and you have the emotional maturity of a blueberry scone. Have at it, would you, and stop fluttering about.” Chastened and pleased in equal measures - Wesley nods.

“Right then. Thanks for that.” And moves off toward an eager Cordelia. A slow song plays. We see Oz with Willow. Xander with Anya. And now Cordelia and Wesley.

Giles sees Buffy, standing alone with her award. Watching her friends dance. He moves to her.

“You did good work tonight, Buffy.”

“Yeah, and I got a toy surprise.”

“Yes. I really had no idea that children - en masse -- could be gracious.”

“Every now and then, people surprise you.” Giles sees something behind Buffy and smiles.

“Every now and then.” Buffy follows his gaze. Turns to see Angel, immaculate in a tuxedo walking towards her. Giles steps gracefully away -- taking the umbrella with him -- as she stands there, eyes locked on Angel. Buffy starts to walk towards him. They meet on the dance floor. They just stand there - not dancing.

“I never thought you'd come.”

“It's a big night. I didn't want to miss it.” He pauses. “It's just tonight. It doesn't mean that-”

“I know. I mean... I understand.” There is a greater meaning to that that is not lost on Angel. They look at each other, their burdens lifted slightly, their pain not gone but mellowing. Words unsaid.

“Will you dance with me?” He has to ask? She folds into his arms, head on his breast. She closes her eyes. And they dance.

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldn't drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them some day

The night was drawing to a close and buffy hadn’t left Angel’s arms yet, knowing that when she did it would be forever. It was the last song when she realised.

An empty house
A broken fairy tale
A hollow girl with empty arms
From an angel's tears
God made the stars
Why can't he make me an unbreakable heart
In my blue world
You shone like heaven's fire
And left me cryin' in the dark
How could anyone
Be so hard
Did you think I had
An unbreakable heart
I suppose I should know
Sometimes love just comes and goes
But I believed, foolish me
We'd go on and on
One day someone will come to you
And rock you tightly in her arms
Please remember this when you drop your guard
Nobody has an unbreakable heart
From an angel's wings to a fallen star
God makes everything
But unbreakable hearts

“Did you?” He looked down on her and saw the tears glistening in her eyes.

“Buffy don’t.”

“I can’t let you go.”

“Please.”

“Please what? If I beg you to stay will you?” He looked away. “Then I’m begging you, I’ll get down on my hands and knees if I have to but please don’t leave me. Angel I love you and no matter that won’t change and if you leave me, for me to be able to move on, thinking that is stupid cos I won’t be able to not when you take my heart with you, so just don’t go.” She drew his gaze back to her face. She was being unfair she knew, she truly did understand why he was going but it didn’t mean she could stand it. in the long run she knew she didn’t have long left and she wanted to be happy in those few years, maybe even months. “Angel I don’t the longest life span, we both know that but without you to help, to back me up, it might be even shorter.”

“Buffy you’re gonna die a frail old lady in bed surrounded by grandchildren.”

“Don’t lie to me, just stay.” He snapped. He wrapped his arms round her even tighter.

“For as long as you want.” She smiled up at him, a watery smile.

“Forever, that’s the point.” He kissed her.
