“For the love of God Buffy please don’t open that raincoat.” He could hardly control himself, he knew she was just waiting for him to take her – and he wanted to. But he couldn’t be that weak. She was under a spell – it was his fault she was like this. Plus when Giles undid the mess he’d made if he did take advantage of the situation he knew he’d have to skip town just to avoid the Buffy beating he’d receive. If that wasn’t enough to make her stay clothed then the fear of what it would do to their friendship was. Deep down inside of him he still wanted her as more than a friend – if he were to do anything now then his chances would go from slim to none right on over to absolutely no chance go rot in hell.

“Come on it’s a party – aren’t you gonna open your present?” God she wasn’t making this easy – but then why would she? He’d forced her to be like this, she was under a love spell, hadn’t Giles said things could get dangerous. Mad Buffy was dangerous! He backed away from her slowly.

“It’s not that I don’t want to, sometimes the remote improbably possibility that you might actually like me was all that sustained me, but not now not like this.” He felt the steps digging into his back and cursed his own stupidity. He should have just let things be – normal people didn’t go racing around casting love spells just cos they got dumped. “This isn’t real to you, you’re under a spell, I mean if I thought that you had any clue what this would mean to me – but you don’t so I can’t.”

“You mean this is all a game to you?” Anger flowed through her words and again he found himself desperately trying to figure out what to say that would make her less furious and dangerous with him.

“God no Buffy – you just…you’re just feeling like this because I screwed up. If we were ever to…I’d want you to know. To feel it and want it for real – as much as I did, because this would destroy us, our friendship and it would destroy Willow too. If you wanted me for real instead of stupid vampires with souls then it would be different – and that raincoat would have been off before you even said a word to me…I wish I could make you see what’s really going on here, I would give anything for you to just understand why this can’t happen now. Buffy you’re my best friend and I love you and I do want you but this is wrong please don’t be mad.” He’d been so busy talking he hadn’t noticed how she’d moved back from him, allowing him the desperately needed breathing room. He hadn’t seen the change in her eyes and posture.

“I do understand Xander.” She held a hand out to him to help him up. He eyed her warily but slipped his hand into hers. She dragged him to his feet as Giles came through the library doors. He halted in his tracks when he saw his slayer’s attire.

“What??? I don’t want to know. I found Amy Xander – everything is back to normal. I hope. A quick test I think would be appropriate. Put your head out the library doors and see what happens.” Scared as he was by the thought it wouldn’t have worked and they’d all find him was nothing to the feeling of disapproval coming from Giles- arguing for his safety would not be wise. He slowly opened the door just wide enough to poke his head through the small gap – nothing. Everyone was going about their business just like a normal day. Which meant that Buffy must have heard at least some of the things he’d said – he wished that Buffy beating he had received because it could be nothing compared to the sheer embarrassment of having her know how he felt.

He closed the door behind him glad that the day was over. He briefly considered calling Cordelia but decided against it – he’d taken enough crazy females for one day. Willow had refused to talk to him when he’d called earlier – Oz however had apologised for hitting him and assured him that eventually Willow would forgive him. He’d managed to avoid talking to Buffy and escaped from Giles’ disapproval as fast as possible.

“You know considering the amount of disappearances and weird stuff in this town I don’t get why people just leave their windows wide open.” The voice had startled him for a second but on recognising the owner he refused to turn round. Guilty as he’d felt while it was happening for what he’d done to her was nothing for the embarrassment he felt now. “Xander?” he slowly inched his way round to see her stood at his window. His jaw hung down to see she still wore only the raincoat.

“Figured you’d have changed by now.” She licked her lips and he found the movement more erotic than she could have known – though he knew she wasn’t deliberately trying to be so.

“You think I patrolled in this.” Confused coloured his vision as he tried to understand why she’d changed again – was it to punish him to make him feel guilty and ashamed of what he’d done? No need to try he already felt it. “Xander I did change, and now I’m here exactly as before – bar one thing. I’m not under a spell this time.” Words failed him as he tried to understand what kind of game she was playing with him. “I remember everything – what you stopped me doing and every word you said. Thank you for not taking advantage and stopping me. But now it’s okay – you don’t have to stop me, you could even do it yourself.” She grinned a little and he couldn’t help but smile back. “Xander you’re my best friend too and the fact you think so much of me that you’d do what you did today means a lot. Angel was a reckless mistake – it was not what I thought as it turns out it was a schoolgirl crush on the mysterious stranger. But he’s not a stranger anymore he’s a terrorist out to get me. I know I was under the spell when I said it – but that part was true, the part where I told you that I was glad when I heard about you and Cordelia. In some ways the two of you – it felt like I’d lost you and then all a sudden you were back again. I knew then that there was something different but the spell and today has just, shown me that you still care like before and that I care like you cared before. So now it’s real, now I want it as much as you do.” He was still waiting for the punch line to a joke he didn’t understand when he tugged on the belt sealing the raincoat closed. With the tug it fell open and revealed her bronze goddess’ body to him. He stopped looking for the joke then.
