He walked in and saw her immediately. She was sat at a booth. As he got closer to her he could see her shaking. He was almost at the table before she turned allowing him to see her tears. He didn’t even need to think before sliding in next to her and holding her while she cried into his chest. Okay so this when he’d first left LA ad started to imagine their meeting this hadn’t been even close to what he’d thought of but still he was with her and deep down that was all that mattered. She did eventually stop crying. She tried to smile at him.
“God what are you thinking right now. Mental Buffy. Hit her head too hard on the fall.” She tried to give him a weak smile.
“Why were you crying?”
“Happy to be back, just the little things I missed.”
“Then why are your eyes so haunted, I’ve been to hell and you so obviously haven’t been there these past three months. Besides I don’t for one minute believe a Slayer would ever go to hell.”
“Wow, shame they didn’t think of that before they decided to play God and rip me out of heaven.” She looked down after saying it, I knew she obviously hadn’t been planning on telling me. “I liked it there. It was so warm, peaceful, quiet. The feeling I get, got when your arms were wrapped round me, protected and loved and safe. Well every single second in heaven was like that.”
“Do you want to go outside?” She nodded and we left. We walked through the hills hand in hand without saying a word. After a while I sat and pulled her down with me. I was leant against a tree and she leant back against me. It seemed so familiar then it struck me, a time before when we’d been sat like this, beside her mother’s grave. “I missed you.” He knew that he probably shouldn’t have said it, and after her revelation he wasn’t expecting anything in return but he needed her to know. “When I found out I just carried on living, pretty much the same. Then this vampire attacked me. He made me see that I had never really processed your death. I just stopped. Almost let him kill me.” She drew in her breath at that and tightened her grip on my hand. Any other time it might have made me smile. “But Cordelia was there, she tried to convince me to fight. Then she said that you’d be disappointed in me if I just gave up. So I didn’t. I carried on the good fight. But you being…gone made me rethink everything.”
“Everything as in Thanksgiving?” She said it so calmly that I was curious as to whether she knew the whole thing or just the 5-minute thing.
“Everything.”
“And what did you come up with?”
“That maybe I was wrong.”
“The great Angel wrong, I never thought I’d see the day.”
“I tried to talk to Cordy about it but she said that it wasn’t my fault and I did what was right. I just wondered if I should have left, or if I should have left…”
“The day how it was.” So she had meant the whole thing. She didn’t seem angry though.
“Whether I should have stayed when you asked me to beside your mother’s grave.”
“And do you still think it would have been different if you hadn’t?”
“I don’t know, I wish it was. Buffy with you truly gone it made me realise something…I love you. That much I knew but I never really thought about you being really gone and it killed me. I don’t ever want to let you go.”
“You have to, I live in Sunnydale remember. Besides all those reasons you had for doing those things, they haven’t just vanished cos I died and they brought me back. They are all still there and sooner or later you’d realise that and leave again.”
“We found a prophecy.”
“Shanshu.”
“How did you know?”
“When I died, they showed me some stuff, just enough of all your future lives so I’d know you would all be okay. You got your Shanshu, it’s not for about 3 years yet but…in the fight Xander and Wesley die. Willow and Oz got back together after Tara leaves. Anya becomes a demon again. She’s not the patron for scorned women anymore, the one for widowed women. You get your Shanshu.”
“If that had happened like it was meant to I would have gone to them and told them to have it in return for your life.”
“I know.”
“Sun’s coming, I need to go soon.”
“I know.”
“Buffy I don’t want to leave you.”
“I don’t want you to leave me but…”
“It’s impossible for us to be together.” She turned back to him. She pressed her lips against his before standing.
“Keep in touch Angel.”
“Always.” She smiled a little, the first genuine smile he’d seen from her in a long time. It made him a little happier. She wasn’t happy though, that much he knew and he swore he’d be there to try and make her happy.
