If Tomorrow Never Comes

Author: Jo aka Slashgirl
Warning: character death
Rating: pretty tame, so PG maybe? No idea really.
Disclaimer: Mark's having Kian's baby! Seriously, he just went into labour at the Shnicky wedding! (in other words: FICTION!)

Kian slowly closed the book he had been reading and rubbed his eyes. He was slightly surprised to find them wet with tears. He had never been one to cry easily over books or films. Or anything for that matter. Maybe that was why people thought that he was the strong, tough one out of the group. If only they could see him now, he thought as he wiped the tears from his eyes. Crying over a silly book. But still...

It had been such a sad book, full of loss and that. He looked at the person sleeping next to him and couldn't help wonder what would happen if he lost them. He couldn't bare that thought and quickly dismissed it from his mind. After one last look at the image of perfection next to him, he turned the light off and tried to get to sleep. After what had seemed like hours of tossing and turning, he decided to go for a walk, hoping that that would clear his mind.

He silently crawled out of bed and, making as little noise as possible, put on a pair of jeans and a hooded sweater. Just before he left, he bent over the bed, taking in the image of perfection that was his lover. His hand moved softly over the beloved face, pushing a few stray strands of hair out of the way and letting his lips replace them with a light kiss. Then he tiptoed down the stairs and out of the door, making sure to take his keys and close the door as silently as he possibly could.

Kian took a deep breath as he walked out into the cool nightly air. He let his gaze wander over the now empty Sligo street and crossed it. Looking at the sky, he noticed thousands of stars, not covered by the usual layer of clouds. He was pulled out of his reverie as a horn blared and he hurried towards the sidewalk, almost tripping over the edge. A hand grabbed his arm to prevent him from falling, and a familiar voice spoke: "You really should be more careful, Kian." Kian was taken aback when he recognized the voice. After all, he hadn't heard it for over a year, when the person it belonged to had died in a car crash. "Shane?" he asked and looked up. The same hazel eyes, the same dark hair, the same beloved smile around his lips, even the same clothes he had been wearing on the day of his death. "But... How?" Kian managed to ask. "I don't know, Kian. You were always the expert when it came to legends. I just suppose some of them are true."

Neither lad spoke for a few moments. Then Kian sighed. "I loved you, did you know that?" Shane smiled sadly and shook his head. "I didn't. And it's too late now. You never did tell me when you still had the chance. Just do me one favour, Ki. Don't make the same mistake with Mark. Show him your love, before it's too late." After those words Shane disappeared, dissolving into thin air.

Just at the moment the last trace of Shane had vanished, Kian heard a well-known voice call his name, followed by the blaring sound of a truck horn. "Mark! No!" he yelled back, but it was too late. He turned around, just to be greeted by the sight of the truck hitting Mark. "Nooo!" he heard himself scream as he run onto the street towards Mark's body. He didn't reach him, as a pair of invisible hands seemed to hold him back and the street turned blurry and faded away.

"Kian, Kian, wake up. You're having a nightmare." Mark's voice brought the blonde back to reality. "Thank god, you're still here", Kian said and hugged Mark tightly. "I love you, d'ye know that?" "I do now! And I love you too, Kian, more than you know. I'd give my life for you", Mark answered. "Don't!" Kian shrieked, "I can't bare to live without you!" Mark laughed at the panic on Kian's face and calmed him down with a deep kiss on the lips.

The End
