| Meriwether Lewis. The name is familiar to most people as are some of his accomplishments; he was one of the captains of the Corps of Discovery; he mapped the uncharted lands of the Louisiana Territory; Lewis and his men were the first to reach the Pacific Ocean from an overland route; he provided naturalists with important stepping stones by cataloging hundreds of new plants and animals. To many individuals, that is the extent of their knowledge of Meriwether Lewis. Few people know of his fate after his glorious mission; few know of the bizarre and grisly circumstances of his death.
