Stephanie McMahon, GM of Smackdown, brings back the U.S. Title. It is now known as the WWE U.S. Title. The new champion will be crowned at the Vengeance PPV.

In July 2004, then Smackdown General Manager Kurt Angle strips John Cena of his U.S. Title for violating his "probation". On the July 29th edition of Smackdown new General Manager Teddy Long makes an 8 Man Elimination match for the vacant U.S. Title.

Title later held up due to controversial finish between Booker and Benoit. A best of 7 series takes place but Booker is injured during the series. With Booker up 3-1, Randy Orton fills in. Orton wins match 7 which makes Booker T the champion 4-3.
