Assistance
1.  The SMU-TESOL content-based and proficiency oriented approach requires that the students process a lot of information at the same time in learning/acquiring the language.

2.  When the teacher asks a student to answer a question in a complete sentence or to summarize what has just been talked about or studied, the student has to process both content (meaning) and language (form) and in doing so, will often falter or hesitate.

3.  It is at this time that the student needs the teacher's help and support.

4.  The teacher should be aware of how long to wait before helping the student (wait time).

5.  The teacher should never let the student "drown"--doing so will embarrass the student.

6.  The teacher needs to know when to "step in" and assist the student.

7.  Why is this effective?  It encourages all students, including timid, shy, and underperforming students to participate by letting them know that they are not alone in the effort.  Help is available.

8.  There are several ways to assist a "drowning" student.
ASSISTANCE #1: Teach students to ask for help (use classroom language)
Teacher:  Ji Young, ask Eun Ha about the disadvantages of home schooling.
Ji Young:  Eun Ha, what...when...disadvantages school... Mr. Schwartz, please help me.
Teacher:  Certainly.  "What are//the disadvantages//of home schooling?"  Now you try it.
Ji Young:  Eun Ha, what are the disadvantages of home schooling?
(OR the teacher can ask if another student wants to assist)
Teacher:  Ji Young, ask Eun Ha about the disadvantages of home schooling.
Ji Young:  Eun Ha, what...when...disadvantages school... Mr. Schwartz, please help me.
Teacher:  Would someone like to help Ji Young with the question?
ASSISTANCE #2:  Put the words in the student's mouth (chunking)
Teacher:  Ji Young, what is one advantage of pair work?
Ji Young:  The pair work dis...ah...is...
Teacher:  Let me help you.  Listen and repeat.  It allows...
Ji Young:  It allows...
Teacher:  ...the students...
Ji Young:  ...the students...
Teacher:  ...to interact independently.
Ji Young:  ...to interact independently.
Teacher:  Good, Ji Young.  Now give it another try.  It allows the students to interact independently:
Ji Young:  It allows the students to interact independently.
ASSISTANCE #3: Model with choral repetition
Teacher:  Ji Young, what is one advantage of pair work?
Ji Young:  The pair work dis...ah...is...
Teacher:  Class, everyone listen and repeat.  Pair work allows the students to interact independently.
Whole Class:  Pair work allows the students to interact independently.
Teacher:  Ji Young...
Ji Young:  Pair work allows the students to interact independently.
