Longs Peak from trail, February

A Fourteener is a mountain that rises at least 14,000 feet (4,267 m) above sea level. There are circa 54-59 official fourteeners in Colorado, more than any other state, even Alaska. There are 15 fourteeners in California and one in Washington, Mount Rainier. There are many climbing routes on these popular peaks which are climbed often. In Colorado, about 2/3 of the peaks can be climbed by a relatively easy (Class1-2) climb. Many people, myself included, have a goal of climbing all 54 of Colorado's fourteeners. If you want solitude, you can find it but have to look for it.  I have been on mountains with over a hundred people on them. On the other hand, climbing fourteeners outside of the regular season (Summer) often brings solitude. Two Colorado fourteeners have roads to the summit, Pikes Peak and Mount Evans. Mount Elbert reigns supreme over all of the other fourteeners in Colorado at 14, 433'. Mount Whitney is the highest point in the continental United States at 14,495'. To find out more about specific fourteeners read any one of the numerous guidebooks available on them.
