So far, we've only pushed the curves up and down. What else can we do? Not much, unless you start doing engine or transmission work.
This shows a transmission that's been altered
to be more close ratio. It would be fun for canyon riding. Maybe
harder to get rolling, and not as fast a top speed, but each shift
results in a smooth transition to the next gear, with not much
discontinuity in acceleration. Racing transmissions are usually
close ratio, with tall 100 mph first gears. Unfortunately, this
gearbox is not possible in the Falco--gears must work in pairs and
these ratios were choosen at random with no concern about being
able to fitting the shafts back together.
This bike has a really wide powerband,
especially in the midrange. We've also fitted it with an 11,000
rpm rev limiter. This is a pipe dream, but it shows you how a wider
powerband can keep you closer to the ultimate force curve
longer, resulting in more acceleration.
