Ashrin Shariff 17’

After the whacking handed out by Double Champion Home United, the Warriors must have hoped for the best when faced against the Protectors again.

However things worked out for the Warriors as a lone goal from Ashrin Shariff ensured the Warriors had the early advantage in the Singapore Cup quarter-final.

The Double Champion had dominated the game before Ashrin Shariff goal when he ghosted in brilliantly at the near post to meet Gusta Guzarishah  excellently-weighted free kick from the left by-line & head the ball pass stand-in keeper Rizal Rahman.

Despite the Warriors goal it was the Protectors who continued to dominate the game as the only thing that stood in the way of the Protectors getting the deserved equalizer was  Adi Saleh.

So well did Home United play throughout the game that if the second leg continues in similar vein there is no reason why the Double Champion cannot make progress into the Semi-Finals comfortably & repeat last season performance in winning the second consecutives Double .

In the other Singapore quarter-final, there was an exciting night as it saw a great comeback by the Young Lions

Sinchi had drew first blood as their newcomer, Li Ben Jian, on the left flank & Liu Bin buzzing around productively stunned the Young Lions to silence when Zhou Yi was given the space inside the box to nod home Li Ben Jian smart cross after a well-disguised dummy from Chen Xiao in the middle.

In the 21 minutes a long diagonal ball from Li Ben Jian, operating with venom on the left, reached Chen Xiao who was able to steer the ball past Hassan Sunny sending his shot across the face of the goal from the far post & just inside the left upright to make it a surprise 2-0 scoreline.

Instead of giving up the Young Lions were undaunted & attack with confidence & incision. The chief architects of their fight-back were Ridhuan Muhamad &Dickson in setting up countless opportunities for Fadzu & Agu.

1 of those chances resulted in the Young Lions first goal of the night as Ridhuan Muhamad laid the ball back from the right touchline with a square pass that the Sinchi defence stood off as several Young Lions players surrounded them inside the box & causing distractions. The ball fell outside the area where Fadzu unleashed a cracking, low drive that found the centre of the net, beating the keeper at last.

The Young Lions were in full flight & it was not long before they drew level at 2-2.

Dickson got the better of a flat-footed Li Chung Cheng down the right & burst into the box. He saw an unguarded target in front of him and no defenders to get past. Dickson angled his low shot past the helpless keeper & just inside the left post. It was a piece of individual brilliance that Dickson has been renowned for.

With that the first half ended in a draw & the second half saw the home team was a far tighter affair as both teams had tighten up in the break. Nevertheless it continued to see the Young Lions domination with only some shocking misses by the Young Lions & great defending by Sinchi keeping the score level.

Still urged on by a noisy crowd the locals finally got the third goal they had been working for when Dickson slamming in with exuberance after another good cross from Ridhuan, this time from the right byline.

Sinchi defenders quickly appeal that the ball, which had reached the far side from a deep cross over the goalmouth, had gone out before Ridhuan could pull it back, but referee R Vijay would have none of it and the goal stood.

Thus the Young Lions will go to Hougang Stadium with a slight advantage after a great comeback
