The Annular Eclipse of Feb. 16, 1999

Observed from near Greenough, West Australia

Shortly before, during and after the annular phase (pictures taken through one layer of metallized mylar).

Views of the chromosphere, some prominences - and a hint of the inner corona - in the minutes after 3rd contact. No filter whatsoever was used here.

Some locals observe the phases of the eclipse, thanks to eclipse glasses I had preserved from the Curacao eclipse of 1998.

All pictures by Daniel Fischer. For the eclipse images a 500 mm telephoto lens was used with a x2 tele extender. The effective focal ratio was about f/20 ... f/25.

Some more details and links to other sites on this eclipse, check the Cosmic Mirror #122, third story!

And here's a longer report!

Many more pictures - and reports - from my Australian adventure will appear here in the coming months. Check the Australia Expedition 1999 Homepage for news!
