Colorado Springs and Tuberculosis

AT ONE TIME there were hundreds if not thousands of these octagonal wood frame cottages in the Pikes Peak Region.  Built for one patient they were arranged with military precision in the TB treatment centers, the largest of which was in Woodman Valley. Each "lunger" was required to rest, get plenty of fresh air (some of the units had canvas sides) and sunshine and follow a rigid healthful diet.  Facilities varied in their cost and targeted population.  The Cragmoor Sanitorium (now UCCS) was a pretty swanky facility while Sunny Vista tried treating less fortunate patients.  When modern antibiotics were developed the sanitoria closed one by one and the cottages were spread to the four winds.
Notice the striking similarity of the cottage I found at 2112 N Corona to this old PPLD photo of what was described as a " Gardiner Tent". I'm guessing these units were mass produced--both the b/w and new photos show a tall closet/4 drawer dresser.  My thanks to Tim and the guys of Essex Homes for allowing me to snoop inside their unit which is an amenity to the home at 2112 which they are remodeling.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW..........if you look closely at these two pretty bungalows on North Logan you'll be able to understand their history.  Both were residential treatment facilities for tuberculosis. The yellow one was known as Nob Hill Lodge and the one on the right, better known today as RONALD McDONALD HOUSE, was called Idlewold. Note the large south facing windows, sunshine being a part of TB treatment.  Also Sunny Vista on East Cache LaPoudre has a history of very progressive TB treatment, providing care for the poor.  Many of the facilities were pricey and the city of Colorado Springs warned prospective "lungers": "NO FREE SANITORIA IN COLORADO SPRINGS"  The tourist industry feared the town becoming too much associated with ill health.
Nob Hill Lodge now a private home
Idlewold is now Ronald McDonald
