In some of the original slides, tail lengths beyond 12 degrees could be measured! The shrinking tail length from day to day in the photographs is an artefact, by the way: There was less and less moonlight in the sky, and thus the film received less diffuse exposure - which is essential in unguided astrophotography to bring out the faintest details of diffuse structures...
