My Interpretation of each line of the Wiccan Rede
Bide the Wiccan Laws we must
In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.
Following the basic 'laws'(advice is actually a better term. Rede means advice) of Wicca will, not only increase your knowledge and power, it will make you a 'better person' in the long run. You should do so because you want to not because you think you ought to.
Live and let live,
Fairly take and fairly give.
Basically, You live your way and I'll live mine. I respect your way, you respect mine. Who are we to judge another persons life? We do not know all of the circumstances and we are not perfect ourselves.
Do not take more than you need. Do not go out a buy ten pounds of hamburger when you KNOW you'll only need two. If you plan on buying ten and freezing some, you best use it before it gets freezer burn and you throw it away. That cow died so that you could be nurished.
If you take from the Earth, give back. If you have to chop down a tree in your yard because it is hazardous to plumming or safety, go plant a tree somewhere else. In a park or a safe spot in your back yard... respect nature and people.
Cast the Circle thrice about
To keep the evil spirits out.
Cast a circle x3. It will keep bad energy from entering and hold your good energy in.
To bind the spell every time
Let the spell be spake in rhyme.
If the spell rhymes, it is SO much easier to remember. So when you write that spell and it rhymes, it will be 'bound' to your memory better.
Soft of eye and light of touch,
Speak ye little, listen much.
Be gentle in aspects of your life. Whether it's gentle on the Earth or a person and their feelings, be gentle.
You can ask my friends, I follow this A LOT. During gatherings, I rarely speak. When I think I have something good or thoughtful to say, I say it, but I gain more knowledge listening to others than I would if I rambled on all the time.
Deosil go by the waxing moon,
Chanting out the Witches' Rune.
A waxing Moon is good for 'bringing forth' things. It, in itself, is 'bringing forth' more light and thus more of the Moon.
Widdershins go by the waning moon,
Chanting out the baneful rune.
A waning Moon is good for banishing things, or 'getting rid' of them.
When the Lady's moon is new,
Kiss the hand to her, times two.
When the Moon is new and has just become visible in the sky again after being dark, some Witches (I've read this somewhere) salute the Lady and welcome her by kissing your two fingers and saluting the moon.
When the moon rides at her peak,
Then your heart's desire seek.
When the Moon is full, it is a good idea to go after something you want. Whether it's a job or that lovely little house you've been looking at, do a spell to help you along (but remember to work in the mundane, as well!).
Heed the North wind's mighty gale,
Lock the door and drop the sail.
The North Element is associated with Earth, so it could mean stay in doors or do not go on a boat or plane. Stay 'grounded'. The North wind is well known for the winter storms it brings. Lock everything up tight! It could also mean that something big or bad is coming, so be prepared.
When the wind comes from the South,
Love will kiss thee on the mouth.
South is associated with love and desire... The warm southern wind brings Springtime, when things can turn to romance.
When the wind blows from the West,
Departed souls will have no rest.
The West is the direction that the souls of those passing on to the Summerland take (Again, I read that somewhere...I suppose they have to work harder when the wind is against them!)
When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast.
East is associated with Air. Air brings in new things like ideas, for example. Or the tendency the East wind has to bring changes, and unexpected visitors.
Nine woods in the cauldron go,
Burn them fast and burn them slow.
There are nine different kinds of wood that are often burned in the cauldron during rituals- apple, birch, fir, hawthorn, hazel, oak, rowan, vine, and willow.
Elder be the Lady's tree,
Burn it not or cursed you'll be.
Do NOT burn Elder wood. Elder wood is sacred to the Lady and if you burn it, She'll take it as disrespect. She'll probably get royally pissed off and you know that that is someone you don't want to piss off...
When the Wheel begins to turn,
Let the Beltane fires burn.
The 'Wheel Turning' refers to the Wheel of the year (or the cycles of the seasons). Beltane is one of the year's major Sabbats or holidays. It occurs in the spring.
When the Wheel has turned to Yule,
Light the log and the Horned One rules.
Yule sits on the opposite side of the wheel of the year of Beltane, at the time of the winter solstice. Lighting a log (or fire) will keep you warm. And the Horned One rules over Yule.
Heed ye Flower, Bush and Tree,
By the Lady, blessed be.
Take care of Nature, and respect it in honor of the Lady. She will reward you for it.
Where the rippling waters go,
Cast a stone and truth you'll know.
When you throw a stone in water, it creates ripples. This is a great example of 'cause and effect'. Your actions will effect other things.
The only thing I can say about 'knowing truth' by throwing a stone in the water is maybe they are talking about scrying.
When ye have a true need,
Hearken not to others' greed.
Do not allow profit to stand in the way of what you believe. If you need something, work honestly to earn it. Other people may be greedy, but that does not mean that you have to be.
With a fool no season spend,
Lest ye be counted as his friend.
You are who you hang out with. Obviously, if you are hanging out with someone, you like them. People will associate you with the company you keep. Say you hang out with a 'poser pagan'. You may be wearing your pentacle with pride but people will probably think you are a 'poser', too.
Merry meet and merry part,
Bright the cheeks and warm the heart.
Be friendly. That was simple.
Mind the Threefold Law you should,
Three times bad and three times good.
What you do comes back times three. Good or bad.
When misfortune is enow,
Wear the blue star on thy brow.
A blue star on the forhead (or anything) symbolizes protection. When you think something bad is happening or is about to, protect yourself.
True in Love ever be,
Lest thy lover's false to thee.
Always be faithful to your lover. If the lover isn't faithful to you, leave them or work it out. (Or you can take this to mean 'Be faithful to your lover unless you two have an open relationship').
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill:
An ye harm none, do what ye will.
As long as your are not harming anyone, that includes yourself, do what you wish. But remember, do not cast spell on someone without permission. Even if you want to cast a healing spell, it IS considered harm because you are forcing your will on them. This concept can be the most difficult for a person new to the Craft to grasp, yet it is the most important. Some people don't want to get well. They either like the attention or have given up on life. Strange, I know, but it happens.
These are my opinions. If you disagree with some or any of them, good for you! You are an individual! If you agree with all of them, then yay! They are not 'Law' or the 'right way'. Just my thoughts, and those of you who know me, know how my thoughts are...
Blessed Be!
