Brain Wave Levels and Cycles
BRAIN WAVE CYCLES PER SECOND
I typed this up from Edain McCoy's book Advanced Witchcraft (it's a good book. If you don't already have it I suggest that you get it).
STATE NAME
Beta
Alpha
Theta
Delta
15-18
8-12
4-6
0.5-2.5
Normal wakefulness. Person can carry on a conversation, think, walk, and talk with full awareness of all physical and mental sensations. Conversational level.
Light to medium Meditative state in which the subject may for a while shut out the physical world, daydreaming, reading, watching television, even studying can induce a light alpha state. Brain is more susceptible to suggections and astral projection is possible but not disassociated completely from your physical state. Alpha is also associated with REM sleep during which dreams occur. Person can easily be jarred back to Beta.
Deep Meditation. This is the ideal state for astral projection, especially into unknown worlds. This meditative state is similar to a medium to deep sleep. Those is Theta find it easier to block out all sensations of having a physical self. Waking someone from this state is more difficult; they will awaken groggy and disorientated. This is the ideal state for meditation, magick and astral projection.
Meditation rarely takes us into the Delta state. Brain activity level at this level is the equivalent to the deepest sleep and unconsciousness. The person may have no sense of any world but the one on which his mind is focused. He will have no sense of any bodily needs and can only be awakened with difficulty. This is not a desirable state for meditation, astral projection, or magick. If you are not injured, in a coma, or running a high temperature, it will be difficult for you to remain in a self-induced Delta state for more the ten or fifteen minutes. Awakening someone from Delta is difficult, and can be impossible in the case of a high fever or coma.
