Artist Statement
Skyler was first introduced to ceramics during his eighth grade year by Greg Maxwell.  He quickly learned the basics and by the end of his high school career he had decided that he wanted to make art while sharing his knowledge with others, so he began pursuing a career as an art teacher.  Skyler spent two short years at a community college before arriving at Fort Hays State University where his technique and aesthetic were shaped by Linda Ganstrom.  Some of the artists who inspire him are Warren McKinsey, Lucie Ried, Hamada Shoji, and Bernard Leach.  Skyler is drawn toward these artists because the work he makes greatly resembles theirs in form, function, and surface design.

Skyler has always been drawn to functional objects so he creates classic forms such as bowls, platters, covered jars, plates, and vases that are strong enough for daily use yet elegant enough to use for entertaining.  Most of his work is formed on the potter's wheel using high fired stoneware in combination with a variety of unique glazes to build interest and add texture to the traditional designs the forms.  These different textures found in each richly colored piece not only stimulate you visually they also appeal to the sense of touch.  As a studio potter Skyler makes work that is meant to be used, combining classical elegance, contemporary color, and functionality.
