| * Do you have a lot of exotic plants and/or animals?* Yes! You can see some animals in my picture page. I dont know a lot about plants and animals so youll have to see the pictures only! Sorry. * Are there any larger cities?* Mauritius is a small island. There is only one city [Port Louis, the capital city] and its probably smaller than your town! * How many people live there anyway?* 1.2 million, Mauritius is over populated. Hindus : 52 percent The general population [Creoles]: 29 percent Muslims: 16 percent Sino-Mauritians [Chinese]:3 percent Table in 000s and data date back to 2000 census Total resident population ('000) 1,185.9 Male 592.0 Female 593.9 under 15 years 25.7 (15-59) years 65.4 (60-64) years 2.8 65 years and over 6.1 Median age (years) 28.8 Dependency ratio 467.2 Population density (per km2) 585 * What's your currency?* The Mauritian Rupee. Written Re 1 and Rs 2 etc. One rupee is equal to 100 cents. The current exchange rate for the UK is 1 = Rs 46. [July 2002, it increases everyday!] Haha. * What's the average income?* Rs 10,179 per month, that is Uk 220 per month [2640 per year] US $ 340 per month [ $ 4080 per year] For Euro, its slightly more than the US $. Mere pittance huh? I know. Its sick. The local tertiary institutions [not the university, see education system] cost about Rs 5000 7000 per month. No wonder people drop out of high school. Btw, 14% of HOUSEHOLDS earn less than Rs 4000 per month. Unemployment benefits do not exist. Old age pension [over 60 y.o.] is Rs 1500 per month. * What are your beauty ideals?* Thats a weird question. Well, I dont really know. I dont suppose its any different from the Europeans [by that I mean Westerners] except that we are much less focused on weight, blondness and nutritional value of food. Lol. We have a Miss Mauritius contest which is totally crap. We also have Mr Mauritius and Miss Transvestite or something like that. * Is it a place to grow up in?* As in a good place? No, except if you are totally clueless and full of yourself, unaware the social issues. I grew up to be disillusioned by the lack of compassion and equality, by the prejudice and selectiveness, by social rejection and by poverty. Next Page Mauritius |
