We understand why the
Arena project is not moving very fast. Richardson says that after the
decontamination work was completed, engineers were at the site and discovered
that the top of the soil was fine, but some way down the soil was still
contaminated. As the club had already spent a lot of money (millions) on this
work they weren't too pleased and confronted the people who did the work, this
argument is still ongoing, allegedly.
The company doing the
de-contamination work have charged the club £11m for work done so far, but then
quoted £15m for the second phase of de-contamination. The club were unaware (or
more likely unclear) that the original quote (which was only £10m) did not
cover the complete work.
The sub-contractors
have now pulled out because they are owed money and the rumour is that the
scheme will die unless the site is chosen for the new National Stadium. That's
why all the bigwigs were in Cov the other week and why the CET has been running
the "Bring the Stadium to Cov" campaign.
