The best band of the 80s no question. They went from amongst the no-wave scrapheap of NYC to release Evol, Sister, and Daydream Nation back to back in the late 80s. They pissed around a bit in the 90s, but not many bands can claim to have more than 3 classic albums. SY released more than that in their first decade (add Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising to the above). Help me, im babbling uncontrollably and ive still got loads of rant left.....

This is probably the clearest shot of Godspeed you're likely to find (theres about ten other members not in the shot). An avant-classically influenced collective from Montreal, Godspeed thrive on darkness, but luckily not in a cheesy-desperate-satanic way, but instead on a relevant, modern kind. Their first two albums and EP are absolute masterpieces of political rock, even without any vocals. But best of all, their collective also contains loads of other similarly good bands, made up of the individual members. Far too good to do justice to in this space.

Smart funk. The art ensemble could be called jazz i guess, but its definitely got the spirit of funk running through it. They managed to make a cross that was neither as limp as most jazz, or as vacant as most funk. Definitely worth investigating, they made at least two albums you'd have to be dead not to enjoy.
This is probably not the best picture of Curtis and I don't really have that many intelligent things to say about him, just that his music was very soulful and quite funky as well. As you can see he also made soundtracks for blaxpoitation movies so he was down with it.
Only a couple of lines to fill with rantings on the Clash? Life's not fair. They started out as a punkband but they weren't puppets like some other punkbands (that's YOU johnny rotten), ok perhaps they were a bit too idealistic and trying to change the world but that's what's so great about them. In their later albums they evolved and explored other musical styles so they outgrew punk, by making the best album ever (according to me), London Calling. I have so many things to say *tries to enlarge box* , but what it comes down to is that they really did matter and inspired so many bands. They ended in 1982 though (don't mention Cut The Crap) and I hope they never ever reunite (that's YOU Johnny Rotten).....

I wont mock Godspeed because they made a little weblike diagram to prove everything is related to the weaponindustry (doom doom!), thereby using such weak links they might as well have proved everything is related to the cookie-making industry (I'm onto you Oreo !). No, I shall restrain and praise them for having a bandmember named Fluffy and for being vengeful canadians.

I've only heard one song of theirs but it was quite groovy (not groov-ay). Not much else I can say about them, lovely picture though.

My knowledge of Sonic Youth is quite limited I must say, I saw them live though this year and they were impressive so you won't hear me say anything bad about them. I can't even think of any drole comments to go with the picture *seeks therapy*

If all bands in the 80s were anything like Joy Division, the 80s wouldn't have been such a crap decade. They started out as a punk band in the late seventies, with songs like Warsaw. Their best songs are in their post-punk period though. With songs like Transmission, Atmosphere, Digital and Love will tear us apart (don't get me started) they made the eighties seem promising. I think this picture is one of the jolliest ever of them

Curtis sang like a girl most of the time, but i'll forgive him, the 70s being pretty much the only decade where you'd get away with it. The orchestration is probably the coolest thing about it, maybe a bit overdone on the strings, but still really nice. Pity Curtis died in 99 or so, but he left a shitload of stuff, so cant complain.

If I was Joe (and blind drunk) i might say the Clash were THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD! Any rational person'd have to settle with merely admitting they were pretty cool. I could diss them for the cheap shots Lissa took at Godspeed, but im bigger than that. But i feel obliged to point out one of their hits (Should i Stay or Should i Go, i think it was) got back to #1 on the back of a jeans commercial. How punk, joe. well done. And if anyone can name me a more ironic album title than Cut the Crap, i'll give them a shiny dollar. But still, i have to say, listening to sandinista for the first time was a bloody good laugh. No matter what joe claims they mustve been on some serious drugs to make that. probably THE BEST DRUGS IN THE WORLD!

They probably pop up on as many lists as the velvet underground, but still they deserve to be in here. The only thing i can think to diss about them is they're responsible for millions of bad Transmission covers. But still, Ian's spastic robot dancing makes up for that. Oh wait, they're made up of future New Order members....Bastards! Ian should've hatched a cunning scheme to take them all with him.
