John Brown's Body and The Battle Hymn of the Republic
The Battle Hymn is supposedly the most popular song of the north. I personally hate this song more than any other song that was sung by the northern soldiers. Its meaning is anything but good. Many churches have adopted this song. Unfortunately this song has no place in any church. Even if you are pro north you should detest this song. If any song can be used to prove my points about the north, this is it. Many think that the Battle Hymn is a song about God. It is not the song is actually claming that John Brown is God or Christ. Julia Ward Howe wrote the song to replace the words of John Browns Body. She said herself John Browns death will be holy and glorious. John Brown will glorify the gallows like Jesus glorified the cross. The whole song is a tribute to the mad man Brown and an insult to the south. Howe also said I officially join the Unitarian Church and accept that Christ was merely a great teacher with no higher claim to preeminence in wisdom, goodness and power than many other men. People sing her song like it is a great tribute to God! I will interpret the song below.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword, His truth is marching on. CHORUS: Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps; They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps, His day is marching on.--CHORUS I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel: "As ye deal with My contemners, so with you My Grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on."--CHORUS He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His Judgement Seat. Oh! Be swift, my soul, to answer Him, be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.--CHORUS In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me; As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.--CHORUS
Here is the text of John Brown's Body, the inspiration of the Battley Hymn
John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave, John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave, John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave, But his soul goes marching on. CHORUS: Glory, glory, hallelujah, Glory, glory, hallelujah, Glory, glory, hallelujah, His soul goes marching on. He's gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord, He's gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord, He's gone to be a soldier in the Army of the Lord, His soul goes marching on.--CHORUS John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back, John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back, John Brown's knapsack is strapped upon his back, His soul goes marching on.--CHORUS John Brown died that the slaves might be free, John Brown died that the slaves might be free, John Brown died that the slaves might be free, His soul goes marching on.--CHORUS The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down, The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down, The stars above in Heaven now are looking kindly down, His soul goes marching on.--CHORUS
Here we go, John Brown is the Lord here and the terrible swift sword quit possibly refers to the Pottawatomie massacre. Here Brown and Co. pulled innocent people out of their homes and killed them simply because they were southerners. They used swords and axes to do it. This action is being praised. Any wonder the south left?
These are Union camps and that is Browns alter and sentence.
The burnished rows of steel are northern rifles and cannon.
He is judging the south.
Another refrence to being like Christ/God.
What kind of hypocrisy do we see here? The insane John Brow who wanted to start insurrections against the government, and went around killing innocent people is praised. While the south who merely wanted to be left alone and had no intention of overthrowing the government is scorned! Is it not obvious why the south would want to separate from these loonies?
