| After it being suggested several times by a few people, I am going to tell you a little about myself. I am a lifelong history nut. Some of my earliest memories are of looking at my grandfathers books. I am not sure if I could even read, but the pictures of things that had happened in the past intrigued me. When my grandfather died, my mom inherited all of his books. A great number of those books dealt with the American Civil War. At that time I held a very different view about the conflict than I do today. I was very pro north. Sometime around fifth or sixth grade I started to read the books more for several reasons. I remember thinking we have all these books and I dont read them anymore. Also, I remember arguing or debating with someone about the cause of the war and decide that I should do more research to support my argument. After really reading and looking into the subject I completely changed my stance on the war. While I do still think that slavery was an issue. I have come to the conclusion that anyone who thinks rationally about the issues involved and looks at all the arguments will see that slavery was not the biggest cause of the war. I use this fact about myselft to argue that I am fairly objective. I believe that the realization about what the real issues of the war were is what made me so much of a staunch Confederate. I think that they deserve to be recognized for the heroes that they were. They dont deserve to be demonized and vilified. Someone has to speak out for them because they can no longer speak for themselves. Also, because I think that they were fighting for less government and more strict interpretation of the Constitution, and that is still an issue today, I feel that there cause is still relevant, despite the fact that we are not using bullets, only words. |
