Tool
Speaking of originals, these guys are metal pioneers.  I was introduced to Tool when Undertow was released, and I immediately became a big fan.  Their oftentimes slow, melodic sound is almost trancelike.  Not to mention the fact that every member of the band is incredibly talented (including Maynard and seemingly endless capacity to his lungs).  I first saw them play live in 96' at a small high school gym in Charlotte, NC.  Believe me, Tool fans are some of the most loyal and hardcore fans of them all.  I'm not sure if anyone has become disillusioned over the formation of Perfect Circle (Maynard's side project), but I like both for their own distinct sound.  You can't go wrong with any of the three albums, but most people prefer Undertow.
