I've had some ask me about the Patton quote I have on my page, and why I chose it. Out of ALL the quotes I could have put there, why did I choose that one? I'll tell you why. General George Patton was a man who knew what needed to be done to accomplish victory regardless of what anyone says, and I wish beyond belief we had people like him around today.
As far back as I can remember, I've loved everything about the military. I had G.I. Joe's as a kid and would play "war" with other kids in the neighborhood. And the truly great times came when my dad let me get out his old Army duffle bag and put on his old Army jacket to wear. My dad served in the 81st Infantry - The Wildcat Division. Here's some background - the 81st got their nickname from the Germans in WWI. The Germans said that the 81st "fought like wildcats". This led to some members of the 81st creating an isignia for the division to wear out of pride. General Pershing saw this, and instituted a new policy for the Army and that was all divisions would design an isignia to wear on their shoulder as a mark of pride in the division they served in. So the 81st Infantry has the oldest insignia in the United States' Army. Pretty cool, huh? I know, not only am I entertaining but informative as well...hahaha.
Back to the original point. As a kid I loved watching war movies with my dad, and I'll never forget the first time I saw "Patton" with George C. Scott. The opening scene where he is making the speech in front of the giant American flag still gives me goosebumps, because that speech was constructed off of some of his most famous quotes. That movie really opened my eyes, because it showed me someone who was not afraid of what anyone said or thought about him...he only cared about his men and defeating the enemy. Patton understood what war was all about.
I've read a lot about military history, various commanders and so forth, and no one captures my attention like Patton. The media did not care for him at all, because like he said "Dammitt Bradley, I am no politician and I'm no diplomat!", which is a quote I used during my Senate campaign. And by the way, he was addressing General Omar Bradley in that statement, who was the last 5 star General we've had. Patton ticked off a lot of people because he did what he thought needed to be done, and he said what he wanted to say and didn't give a crap about what anyone thought of it. Here's a few of my favorite quotes from Patton -
"A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week."
“I am a soldier, I fight where I am told, and I win where I fight.”
“If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking.”
“Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way. ”
“Live for something rather than die for nothing.”
“No good decision was ever made in a swivel chair.”
“You’re never beaten until you admit it.”
"No sane man is unafraid in battle, but discipline produces in him a form of vicarious courage."
"A man must know his destiny… if he does not recognize it, then he is lost. By this I mean, once, twice, or at the very most, three times, fate will reach out and tap a man on the shoulder… if he has the imagination, he will turn around and fate will point out to him what fork in the road he should take, if he has the guts, he will take it."
"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."
"No bastard ever won a war by dying for
his country. He won it by making
the other poor dumb bastard die for his
country."
"There is one tactical principal which is not subject to change. It is to use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wounds, death and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time."
"You're never beaten until you admit it."
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."
And now for some of my true favorites:
"We are going to kill German bastards. I would prefer to skin them alive, but gentlemen, I fear some of our people at home would accuse me of being too rough."
"Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty. The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do."
"You know, by God I, I actually pity those poor bastards we're going up against, by God, I do. We're not just going to shoot the bastards; we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks."
And of course - "May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't.”
Now I'm a huge fan of the Michael Savage radio show "The Savage Nation", so when I bought one of his books and saw a chapter titled "More Patton and Less Patent Leather" I was pretty pleased someone felt the same way. The chapter's theme was that we need leaders who aren't afraid of do what needs to be done or say what needs to be said regardless of how the media will perceive them. Patton was a man who never cared what was said about him, he only wanted to win. Patton understood how savage and barbaric war is, and was never afraid to do what needed to be done because he only wanted to win and save the lives of American soldiers.
After America defeated the Nazi's and we were trying to rebuild Germany, there was a group of Nazi sympathizers and former SS who had a group called the "Werewolves". They engaged in activities such as trying to assassinate new German leaders and to bomb those who sided with Americans. Sounds similar to today, doesn't it? Well it got squashed pretty quickly. Patton gave orders to his men that when they caught one of these Werewolves to tie them to a pole on a street and shoot them in the head as an example of what would happen if you sided with these former Nazi's. Guess what...the activities of The Werewolves ceased pretty quickly.
Could you imagine a leader today that acted like Patton? He'd be raked across the coals by the media and countless congressional hearings. He'd probably get so sick of it all he'd resign. No, I take that back, he wouldn't resign...he'd go out kicking and screaming. Patton also understood that Russia was not a true ally and wanted to go ahead and take them out. He figured since we already had the troops in Europe that we should go ahead into Russia and take them out. He said this about the Soviet Army, "In my opinion, the American Army as it now exists could beat the Russians with the greatest of ease, because, while the Russians have good infantry, they are lacking in artillery, air, tanks, and in the knowledge of the use of the combined arms, whereas we excel in all three of these. If it should be necessary to fight the Russians, the sooner we do it the better". Patton was a man of vision...he knew the danger of the Soviets, yet no one wanted to listen. Could you imagine if people had? Could you imagine how different this world would be if the Soviet Union had been crushed then? Here's a very interesting bit from a letter he wrote to his wife. If you didn't know, Patton was the "governor" of occupied Germany and traveled all over the country. Here's what he told his wife in letter - "Berlin gave me the blues. We have destroyed what could have been a good race, and we are about to replace them with Mongolian savages. And all Europe will be communist. It's said that for the first week after they (the Russians) took it (Berlin), all women who ran were shot and those who did not were raped. I could have taken it (instead of the Soviets) had I been allowed." He knew what acts of barbarism the Soviets were capable of, and he tried to warn people.
Not only did he understand the danger of the Soviet Union, but he also knew about the commie traitors that were in the media. Here's what he had to say about that - "All the general officers in the higher brackets receive each morning from the War Department a set of American (newspaper) headlines, and, with the sole exception of myself, they guide themselves during the ensuing day by what they have read in the papers". Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
I could honestly write for hours about my respect for General George Patton, so hopefully I've provided some shining examples of why I have such admiration for him. Other than Jesus, Patton is the one person I would love to have dinner with. Could you imagine the backlash in the media today if a military leader said, "The Quran and Islam has some good ideas but there is no place in this world for either"? Well those are Patton's words. Not only did he understand and voice the danger of communist Russia, but also the danger of the Muslim religion.
On a side note here that has nothing to do with Patton. Muslims claim to worship the same god Abraham did, right? So why would that same god tell one group of people that they need to believe in Jesus for eternal life and tell another they need to cut the heads of off of non-believers so they can have 72 virgins? It's not the same god. The TRUE God has told us "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." - 1 John 5:12. Basically if a "religion" does not recognize that Jesus is the Son of God, then whatever god they worship is NOT the same God that is in the Bible. Whether you believe in the God of the Bible or not, you have to admit that the Scripture spells it out pretty plainly, so don't buy into the "they have their path to God" bs. If a religion just calls Jesus a prophet, then they deny Him for who He is, and therefore they don't agree with what the Bible states and don't believe in the same God I do.
But back to Patton, hopefully I've explained why I have so much respect for him. He was NEVER afraid to tell it like it is. Can you imagine any "leader" in Washington acting this way? The only one I know of is Tom Tancredo, but of course he's dismissed as some kind of hate-monger.
Until this country has a true leader like Patton who isn't afraid to do what needs to be done, or say what needs to be said, I really fear for our future.
